Trees in VR are hard [1/4] 🌳

We wanted beautiful and stylized trees in our game so I tried a bunch of stuffs. Small thread to talk about the trees 🔽

[2/4] The first method I tested is the classic one: interspersed planes on which we put a texture with alpha => render is ok but generates a lot of overdraw, not ideal for VR but we keep a 72 FPS constant with multiple trees.
[3/4] Then I spend a bit more than 3 hours to create and tweak this shader with VFX Graph to have a beautiful volumetric foliage. I thought it would run smoothly, OH BOY I WAS WRONG
Testing with only one tree, we go down to 24FPS. Too many particles is clearly a killer 😱
[4/4] Here is a preview of the shader, the leaf texture was made quickly in PhotoFiltre haha
