If only there was someone they could have asked about appropriate holiday images and traditions. If only… 🤦🏽‍♀️

(We don’t expect much of them, dog knows, but it would be nice to be _pleasantly_ surprised, just once.)

Since it appears many folk out there never had a Jewish friend growing up/never got a chance to learn about Chanukah: storytime!

@LAGilman I mean, religiously, Christmas shouldn't be so important to Christians. Easter is a much bigger deal. But *shrug*.
@kkearns I’m not sure what this comment has to do with my telling the story of Hanukkah?
@LAGilman Missing a couple candle holders? Wow...
@LAGilman menorahs all look alike, amirite?
@RickSanchez I’m too tired to muster more sarcasm tonight.
@LAGilman @pluralistic tell us you have no Jewish friends w/o telling us you have no Jewish friends…
@LAGilman And Merry Christmas Mr. Vice President on that most sacred day when the Heatmiser was born in Beth’s Lamb.
@LAGilman even worse is that the emoji at the end seems to be correct.
@LAGilman An attempt was made...
Hanukkah sameach!
@LAGilman
This might be a thoughtless inconsiderate mistake but Pence has in the past slighted Jews.

@Silversalty Pence is a piece of shit. Antisemitism is only one of his moral offenses.

@LAGilman
Pence is intentionally projecting Christian symbols and values onto Jews.

I can't even think of mistakenly projecting Jewish symbols onto Jesus since he was Jew.

But picture Jesus with King David locks and wearing tefillin.

@LAGilman
Imagine if someone gifted Pence with a Last Supper painting which accurately depicted a group of Jews gathered for a formal religious ceremonial dinner.

A passover Seder.

@LAGilman
Seems to be an access popup appearing on the link that I didn't see.

Anyway..

@LAGilman he doesn’t know, an intern did this. Pence doesn’t care.
@stsparky @LAGilman you’d think that if he’s going to pander to the religious conservatives and AIPAC, they might *want* to get it right.
@LAGilman
Put on your yarmulke
Here comes Hanukkah
So much funukah
To celebrate Hanukkah
Hanukkah is the festival of lights
Instead of one day of presents, we have *six* crazy nights!
@LAGilman Sorry to ask but i'm curious and i'm not familiar with Jewish religion details. But what's the difference? I mean, i thought the picture was a Jewish candelabra. I count and has 7 arms. But i think i miss something.

@Kyrylys A channukiah (commonly referred to as a menorah) has 9 candles - one for each of the 8 nights, and one “leader” to light it. The photo they chose only has 7. Basic math.

The idea that Christians don’t need to know anything other than their own symbols is egotistical b.s.

@Kyrylys (I was referring to Pence, not you. Realized that could have come across wrong, sorry)

@LAGilman @Kyrylys alternatively, the paeans to marginalized communities need not require actual interaction with them.

Nobody is making him say he cares about Hannukah. He wants to, but only in a way that doesn't include Jews.

Part of why it applies to him and not to her, is because I doubt @Kyrylys would try to indicate knowledge and comfort with #Judaism beyond her actual interest in it (as proven by this exact request for information).

@imstilljeremy @Kyrylys um, thanks for explain8ng my own clarification to me?

@LAGilman @Kyrylys

I'm sorry. I was trying to build off of your reply and give a slightly different way of looking at/explaining the problem in a way that I thought might be more accessible.

I was definitely not trying to speak over you, correct you, or explain to you. I see how what I said implied that, though. Would you prefer me to delete my replies, or leave them up? If so, all of them?

Again, I apologize.

@Kyrylys @LAGilman

#Menorah is just #Hebrew for light. There are a variety of #candelabras associated with general #Jewish use (typically intertwined with the image of #Jews as a pre-20th century relic). These can have any number of candles like any candelabra.

A #Hannukiah is a #ceremonial menorah used to represent the story of #Hannukah, which is required to have a shamesh (elevated leader candle) and 1 candle holder for each night (8) for a total of 9 candles.

@Kyrylys @LAGilman the picture is missing something- one of the right candles that is supposed to be in that 🕎 menorah.
@LAGilman perhaps they're trying to appropriate Diwali at the same time?
@LAGilman They could even have just looked at their emoji!
@LAGilman *squints* oh. Oh, dear.
@LAGilman They could've asked the icon that they were using...
@LAGilman , it's the latest Republican cut in social services spending -- one less night of miraculous oil. Get a job and buy some more oil yourselves, ancient Hebrew freeloaders! 😉

@LAGilman I would put money down that this was not an accident.

That administration had a knack for doing and saying things exactly contrary’s to whatever other culture, race, or religion we were celebrating that was so astute it had to be intentional.

@LAGilman they could have just consulted the emoji - 🕎
@eadingas @LAGilman Ok now this is weird. The emoji shows up in my Android app with only 4+1 branches. Let me check: 🕎 yup. Wtf, app
@Odanaos @LAGilman I'm on android now and I see it properly. are you on a samsung? i think TouchWiz has some of the weirdest emojis out there
@eadingas @LAGilman Samsung indeed. My twitter app also had problems with emoji, refusing to load certain ones. By the way: this is how I see it on the phone
@LAGilman Have we a new Holiday, called ‚Festival of Lights‘? Maybe it‘s a card for his friends at ‚Jews for Jesus‘?
@LAGilman is it supposed to be 9 candles? Sorry, I really don't know.

@tobi Yes. 8 nights, plus the “leader” candle to light them all.

Yes, Chanukah lasts 8 nights, that’s the point of the entire holiday. To recap: https://at.tumblr.com/lauraannegilman/as-seems-to-have-become-tradition-my-retelling-of/bpotxmlp0t0q

@LAGilman wow … that’s just lazy.
@LAGilman I mean, the emoji is a 9-branched Hanukah menorah also, which also should have given them a heads up...

@LAGilman Also, has strong vibes of this throwback from earlier in the year:

https://boingboing.net/2022/04/17/us-politicians-completely-fail-at-jewish-outreach.html

Where the card image included a mishmash of Rosh Hashanah and Hanukah tchotchkes on it, including leavened items, and no matza.

US politicians completely fail at Jewish outreach | Boing Boing

Regardless that Passover is not Hannukah, and the whole not-eating-of-leavened-bread thing is sort of core to the holiday’s traditions, Republicans want you to have a happy whatever it is Jew…

Boing Boing
@LAGilman i am not very smart and not Jewish. Is it because there's only 7 candles instead of 8?
@LupusAstartis @LAGilman
I had to figure that out too 🫶🏼
@DearPrudence @LupusAstartis I suspect, though, if you were going to design a Hanukkah card to send out to people who are Jewish, you would check that shit first.
@LAGilman
Or maybe a Kwanzaa candelabra.

@LAGilman Arguably the “best” part is that the Unicode symbol shows nine candles.

Maybe it shows something different on Pence’s machine. It is Unicode.

@LAGilman The point is that Jewish people aren't the intended audience here. Which is sort of grim.
@LAGilman honestly it’s not a stretch that he might believe Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are the same
@LAGilman because I was curious, I wanted to see how hard it is to find a menorah picture like this. If you image search "menorah", "menorah lit", or "menorah lit stock image" you see the 8+1 for pages. You don't get 7 close to the top until you search for "menorah lit stock image royalty free" which is telling. I didn't find the image they used, so that's obviously not what they did, but it's still telling.
