Absolute lmao at how many users are gonna get booted this week

Seriously tho, they're gonna boot so many accounts, and such a large fraction of them are not going to return, it's gonna put rocket fuel under all the other platforms.

Other than actually pulling the plug on the servers, I'm not sure I could come up with a faster way for Twitter to end itself than annihilating the content creators' ability to use that platform and link out to any other sites.

And to do it all in one go! lmaooooo

@Pwnallthethings I feel as if someone will "forget" to implement it fully somehow
@apearlma @Pwnallthethings yeah, I suspect enforcement will be extremely selective, not a bulk ban. But… underestimating their capacity for self sabotage has made a fool of me before, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Pwnallthethings the entire business model for the large posters that donate their value to Twitter is monitizing everywhere else. If you break that you remove every incentive for many creators
@Pwnallthethings I suspect the collapse will be slower than anticipated, normies will just remove the links and continue is as normal, they won't leave until celebrities do

@plastichymn @Pwnallthethings

Plus:

- Government agencies that use Twitter like a PSA channel
- Companies using it for marketing and tech support

@plastichymn @Pwnallthethings
nah I was just looking for the straw to break. As more creators flee, their audiences will too.
@Pwnallthethings I already had a link to my Mastodon account in my profile. Tried to update my name to "I am John Mastodon" and the save failed, but the url is still there.
@Pwnallthethings
this is going to be very selectively enforced
@Pwnallthethings I can’t tell if this is a thinly veiled threat to get adversaries off the platform, or a braindead unawareness of consequences.
@Jdefoe @Pwnallthethings
at first I read this as "get advertisers off the platform" and honestly that's not far off either
@falconfour @Pwnallthethings they’re connected, that’s for sure.
@Jdefoe @Pwnallthethings I’d say about 98% the latter. He has NO idea what he’s doing or how to run a social media platform or any kind of online community.
@Pwnallthethings with bonus extra regulatory action by the EU on top of everything else.
@wordshaper @Pwnallthethings I kinda saw this whole EU regulatory action coming (many of us did), which was why I made this meme 2 1/2 weeks ago:
@Pwnallthethings the second paragraph sounds like a challenge

@Pwnallthethings

🐦┐( ̄ヘ ̄)┌🐦 <---The Public

🗑️ 🗑️

@Pwnallthethings What's really funny is he's doing this -as- he's actively courting investors for more money for Twitter. Yeah, daily active users for the last month may be spiked, but the amount of accounts leaving should make those investors very nervous

@raindropworks @Pwnallthethings Musk be like: Please invest in my twitter, you can't be in control in anyway & have to trust I know what I'm doing in spite of the fact I've only made idiot tier calls every day for the 6 short weeks I've owned this platform all of which have cost me & it dearly, but invest in me!

Ignore the haemorrhaging user base! I'm not gonna ban the users who haven't yet left for even thinking about leaving me, I mean twitter!

Please give me your money I'm good at business!

@HallGrae @Pwnallthethings Still amazed at how Mastodon has grown by over 50% just since Musk took over. Wonder what the numbers will look like in a day or two

@raindropworks @Pwnallthethings The fact that all of this "OMG NO LINKING TO OUTSIDE SOCIAL MEDIA SERVICES" started because Mastodon was blatantly blowing up and Musk saw twitter's numbers spiralling is sure hilarious.

He. Did. This. To. Himself.

Literally Musk helped grow Mastodon more than anyone else so it's becoming a competitor to the platform he spent 44 billion to own, he's that frkn stupid and bad at business.

@HallGrae @raindropworks @Pwnallthethings also put all of those names on par with one another by mentioning them together
@raindropworks @Pwnallthethings the things is the sales pitch is so bad? Hey I got a platform with an unsustainable debt load because I overpaid. I also have alienated users and customers give me more money so I can what? What does he say he is going to do? And I am going to guess the other equity holders would have to approve the dilution? It’s so ridiculous.
@Pwnallthethings Killing off their top content creators (blue check) wasn't a bad start
@Pwnallthethings its hard to imagine the man who started SpaceX and Tesla turning into this much of a buffoon so rapidly. Man I worry about myself when I hit my 50s. fuck.
@jackmott @Pwnallthethings Eh, he didn’t so much start them as acquire and promote existing talent under his own name.
@shawrd773 @Pwnallthethings he 100% started spacex and 99.9% started tesla which was just two guys and a sketch when he came on.
@jackmott @Pwnallthethings It appears smoking lots of weed, doing psychedelics, and not sleeping isn’t a great combination for making good business decisions.
@WeShall @Pwnallthethings weed doesn’t tend to turn people into maga choads. lack of sleep though, yeah

@jackmott

Just him. Nothing to do with being 50. And I'm totally not biased, just as Twitter is no longer biased.

@Pwnallthethings

@kdvncm @Pwnallthethings its not just him, theres definitely a thing that happens to some men around there! I got 6 years to figure it out haha
@jackmott @Pwnallthethings I'm 51 and haven't turned into a fascist dictator. You'll be ok

@jackmott @Pwnallthethings

(That’s because he did neither of those things)

@u3b3rg33k @Pwnallthethings ok who started spacex

@jackmott @Pwnallthethings

maybe he did start that one. definitely not a founder of TSLA though.

@u3b3rg33k @Pwnallthethings yeah I specifically didn't use the word founded because I know people like you believe he just bought tesla and didn't build the company ( he did build it). From the first roadster till now, and now I hope he leaves.
@Pwnallthethings It's enough to make you wish site would ban links to Twitter. I really wish media would stop using it to keep their receipts.
@jonahstein
They’d have to do something about other history being destroyed first.
An entire archive of a weekly magazine in Charlottesville, Va
disappeared from the internet. Someone bought the data and scrubbed it clean.
@Pwnallthethings Linktree is on the list of "aggregators". That'll hit a crapton of content creators who collected links to their Youtube, Twitch, Instagram, Patreon et al. in one convenient place.

@Pwnallthethings I think his goal is to force people off the site. He saw the Streisand effect on his airplane

The only thing that has been consistent across all his actions is he wants to destroy the site, like he discussed in his text messages

@Pwnallthethings I cannot think of a faster way for Twitter to convince advertisers the site is sinking than a hostage policy like that.
@Pwnallthethings The ego on this dude is off the charts, lol. Enjoy having no influence Elmo.😂
@Pwnallthethings It will be interesting to see how far it can collapse. Like, who are the dead enders and how much of the community will stick around as long as they’re around, and how many advertisers will be interested in whatever number of eyeballs remains?
@VierLeger @Pwnallthethings the advertisers have devolved into late night informercial level trash.
@Pwnallthethings
at this point I am only still there to see how big the flames from the shithouse burning will get
@Pwnallthethings I'm not normally conspiracy minded, but it looks like an awfully weird move. Intentional sabotage?
@peterbutler @Pwnallthethings We might be mistaken to attribute rationality to Elon's actions

@Pwnallthethings

Musk is pivoting the site to conservative media and will end up partnering with at least mainstream television network (likely fox) to produce a Twitter news program. He’s talked a lot about wanting long form video and this is a use of it that will generate real revenue b/c he’ll he able to partner with their ad revenue.

The site is done. He’s going to pander to the FoxNews/truth social crowd b/c that’s where the quick money is.

@Pwnallthethings i am genuinely interested what their reasoning is here bc it makes no sense. Of course it’s dumb but what story are they telling themselves where this is a good idea?
@qjurecic I suspect they're seeing so many people leaving that they feel the need to block exit routes.

@qjurecic The original story they probably told each other is that ElonJet is here and that made Elon sad, and also the list of blocked sites is a "makes Elon annoyed" list too.

Mastodon, Post = reminder that they're forcing people to leave and can't control it
Facebook, Instagram = Zuckerberg grudge
Truth Social = Trump didn't come back
Nostr = annoyed at Jack

etc

(note, not on that list: Telegram, Gab, Parler, WeChat, TikTok, YouTube)

@Pwnallthethings but that leaves linktree, which is going to drive out a ton of creators linking to Etsy shops and so on!
@qjurecic @Pwnallthethings linktree was banned too
@qjurecic @Pwnallthethings I guess just for some folks. I’m not sure what’s happening. Some people are saying their links are blocked.
@qjurecic @Pwnallthethings he probably was just afraid people would use linktree to redirect to Mastodon etc

@qjurecic @Pwnallthethings Yeah but if you don't do linktree, everyone just gets a linktree. My first thought when I heard about this was "Oh, I'll make a Linktree" until I found out it was banned too.

Of course, now I just have to put my socials on my own website and link to that, which I *think* is still allowed. For now.

@Pwnallthethings @qjurecic I’ve never heard of Nostr. Is it related to BlueSky?
