"We call on Twitter to do the right thing and restore these accounts immediately. As for reports that the new owner, Mr. Musk, is directing this activity as retribution for unfavorable reporting, that simply must stop, or it will lead to all journalists leaving Twitter.” --Jen Judson, president of the National Press Club https://www.press.org/newsroom/national-press-club-statement-journalists-being-removed-twitter
National Press Club Statement on Journalists Being Removed from Twitter

WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 – Following is a statement from Jen Judson, president of the National Press Club, on reports that journalists have been removed from Twitter because of their reporting. “We are very disappointed at the many reports in recent days that Twitter accounts for prominent journalists at major brands have been deleted without warning or explanation. We call on Twitter to do the right thing and restore these accounts immediately. As for reports that the new owner, Mr. Musk, is directing this activity as retribution for unfavorable reporting, that simply must stop, or it will lead to all journalists leaving Twitter.” Founded in 1908, the National Press Club is the world’s leading professional organization for journalists. The Club has 3,000 members representing nearly every major news organization and is a leading voice for press freedom in the U.S. and worldwide. @w7voa or... like, just leave.
@w7voa Like, the suppression of journalists is bad, but at this point the whole platform is broken and its time to find a replacement.
@NLAWScametovisit @w7voa came here to write that as well. Leave. Let it die. People will find you. Reading the comments under tweets, the change is stark. Report here. Report on Post. But stay the f away from twitter.
@w7voa Didn't he say it's just for a day? Man, Elon's word is not worth a plugged nickel. I'm sorry for all the fools who religiously follow this guy
Musk's mercurial. Bad for Twitter.
@w7voa He needs you journalists more than you need him. Leave and flex your muscles.
@w7voa i think Twitter is already done for. I left weeks ago and have not missed it a bit.

@w7voa

He’s played his hand, time to move on IMHO.
Who knows if Mastodon is the future of social media, but it sure ain’t twitter.

@w7voa I just worry that Elon would hear “it will lead to all journalists leaving Twitter” and respond “really? You promise?”

@tony @w7voa

When he SAYS things like this (nobody is interested) to make it look as if he is shrugging, he is at the same time busy trying to block all links to Mastodon and having automated (untruthful) “malware” messages on them all…. suggesting he is FAR more bothered about the exodus than his words suggest.

@tony @w7voa honestly I'd rather all the news orgs start setting up their mastodon instances and push content here. I will miss the bird site but I want it to die at this point. There will be growing pains for sure. Twitter was my top source for finding out breaking info, but yeah. I hope it dies 😔
@justin @tony @w7voa Tome to move on and bury the bird!
@tony @w7voa So what? If he wants to run another Gab/Parler/Truth Social let it die. Once it goes broke Twitter could be revived if journalists want the old place back. But it might have to fail first.
@tony @w7voa He'd have to be stupid to want that. Journalists are a big reason Twitter is huge. They trumpeted its status and made it the place they broke news and nattered endlessly with each other and their audience.
@rcade @tony @w7voa One of his problems is that he doesn’t understand human emotions. He sees humans as machines and he keeps pushing buttons and turning dials and being surprised that he doesn’t get the output he expects.

@tony @w7voa

Twitter is nothing without its journalists. Twitter is considered a town square, but that requires diversity and journalists, or it becomes nothing but a right-wing cesspool.

@MillieMouser @tony @w7voa
No really, the danger isn't "all" journalists getting banned, bc then Twitter will just die, as is right.
The danger lies in banning *some* journalists, along with all the watchdogs, activists,. ... he can get his hands on, while still preserving a functional husk. So he's excluding more and more voices, and still the remaining liberal ones stay, proud to "not let a billionaire destroy Science Twitter" or whatever.

@tony journalists and other media accounts are more valuable to Twitter than they know. They give it credibility, relevance and content. Musk can say what he wants (just like he did about advertisers), but he would have much to lose.

I really don’t understand how any journalist is still there with an active account. @w7voa

@w7voa I don't understand why they don't just leave anyway. The fate of American democracy, free speech and journalism doesn't rest on the survival of Twitter

Twitter's just a website. It replaced prior systems, and new one's can supplant it. It's not "Too Big to Fail". Just let it die

@purpledragon @w7voa That’s how I feel about it!🤷🏻‍♀️It really only hurts HIM if it dies!
@w7voa “it will lead to all journalists leaving Twitter.” Unfortunately I know this is not true…but nice sentiment.
@w7voa
Screw it just move to Mastodon 😎
@w7voa Not only will that be something Elon probably wants, it won't be ALL ... it'll just be the reasonable ones that'll leave. Those agreeing with, or sucking up to, Elmo will remain with less opposition.
@w7voa But isn’t it just entirely better everybody leaving Twitter?! I am still surprised how many people are still on it …
@w7voa begging Elon to abuse you more is an interesting position.
@w7voa some of the best advice I've ever gotten when I left a toxic job (FBI got involved after I left) I once had was "don't complain, just leave.". I understand the impulse to want to rip Elon to shreds. But it's far more effective if most US need orgs simply start their own mastodon servers and delete their bird accounts

@w7voa

I fall in the camp of not getting why anyone has a natural right to be on any platform. Twitter doesn't want you. If you write for the NYT you don't expect to be able to have your voice heard in the WaPo. You get kicked kicked off a platform, that's fair game. Let's see if you can replicate your audience on a different platform (ie. Mastodon). I'm following you, so I believe you will.

Musk obviously believes he can play hardball and win. Let's see if he's right...

@w7voa but we, as a people, can leave Twitter. It is not indispenible, nor is it irreplaceable. It is time to move on.

@w7voa Really?! Someone actually expectsTwitter to do the right thing at this point. Pretty sure that ship has sailed!!

#elonkilledtwitter

@w7voa I seriously doubt Musk will do that. It seems that anyone who criticizes him are given the boot or suspended. He’s banned more journalists earlier today. So much for Musk’s promise of free speech. He has some real issues going on.

@w7voa this is a very important moment for journalists.

Either try and negotiate to get back onto a hostile social media platform.

Or...

Realize journalists have the power and leave Twitter.

Elon pretends to have the power. He doesn't. People are what advertisers want on Twitter and without them Twitter hemorrhages money. Journalists attract people and money. Without them...Twitter decays.

@w7voa Just leave. Don't beg. It is undignified.
@w7voa I think it might be too late.
@w7voa forget that. Call on all legitimate news outlets to leaver Twitter
@w7voa Twitter is really devolving. Such total BS 😠
@w7voa y’all addicted. Just leave. You have no constitutional right to be on Twitter.
@w7voa What they should be doing is encouraging everyone to get on here instead. Twitter is dead.
@w7voa journalists and governments are so used to getting free service from Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, etc.
@w7voa He's openly admitted it (in the most messed up way possible).

@w7voa honestly, they should just pull the plug.

Musky loves the attention. It’s an addiction.

If people left Twitter, he would be ruler of an abandoned realm.

People, not just journalists, but everyone focused on “fighting” for Twitter is enabling him. Twitter is not a country.

People don’t want to rebuild accounts.

Elon only has power if it’s granted to him.

Being his willing victim isn’t helping anyone.

@w7voa he may be very ok with just keeping the journalists from Fox News, the NY Post, Breitbart, One America, and a couple of Hungarian and Russian chaps. They'll provide way more content than his new target audience can consume anyway.
@w7voa I think, perhaps, Musk wants journalists who do excellent reporting to leave. He seems to be creating a world where he goes unchallenged
@w7voa My concern is that everyone know what Elon is like - the idea that he's going to change is incorrect. He's ruled by emotions to make impulsive decisions - and instead of backtracking, he'll double down. We're going to see this over and over - possibly with people running from Twitter to Mastadon and back until they finally realize Twitter isn't Twitter any more. Twitter is now, "Musk" - and he's the tweet.

@w7voa my account was banned for saying self harm was a nonstarter.

For targeting.

@w7voa
We call on journalists to do the right thing and not make the same mistakes you made with Trump.

Elon Musk is just as dangerous and must not be given the excuses and oxygen that empowered Trump all the way to January 6, 2021.

Staying on Twitter = endorsement.

Let the bird die in darkness.

First they came for the Jews
And I stayed with the bird
Because I was a journalist
Then they came for the LGBTQI+
And I stayed with the bird
Because I was a journalist
Then they came for the Democrats
And I stayed with the bird
Because I was a journalist
Then they came for the Never Trumpers
And I stayed with the bird
Because I was a journalist
Then they came for the journalists
And waaaaa🚑 there was no one left
To speak out for me
@w7voa. Don't just call, DO SOMETHING about it. Or perhaps you have no authority or ability to actually do something, so spare us your hollow concerns.

@w7voa

Anyone who's ever read the comments of any paper that's part of that club will quickly understand why they love Twitter so much.

@w7voa I think that journalists should already leave. This was their prime preview of things to come. Take a hint, y'all!
@jrredho , if all the major news sites work together then they can simply boost their collective reporter's comments via this site. I started using Twitter because of links to reporter's tweets via their own news sites. Just change the links to this site instead. It's the reporter's, not Twitter why we used twitter anyway.
@Jonio Exactly! Not being able to avoid reading all the hand-wringing is painful for me, even though I am a glutton for punishment.
@w7voa , journalists need to leave Twitter now. The media companies can boost their comments via here. This is why I went on Twitter in the first place. Links to their reporter's comments and others via their own news sites. All media outlets should work together to shift away from Elon's cult site.
@w7voa , yeah. The do-the-right-thing ship has sailed and he torpedoed it. TwitChan is lost.
@w7voa He did say that it was because his private jet was being tracked and published and he was concerned for his children’s safety. In this one instance, I think he was right.
