I don't have a Jimmy Carter story of my own, but about a decade ago I met an artist named Gil McCue who was also a Navy veteran. He held regular weekend pop-up shops in downtown Carlsbad, CA to sell his artwork.
My wife struck up a conversation with him and after a short while she asked him about a photo he had displayed next to his artwork. It was a photo of him presenting one of his paintings to Jimmy Carter, from one Navy vet to another.
He was proud of showing his work in the presence of a former US President, but you could tell the true part of the moment was him getting to meet Jimmy Carter. He spoke glowingly about how genuine of a person he was. It left such an impression on him that here he was decades later still carrying around a photo of that time they met.
I left that day with an impression of the former President myself. People don't carry around a photo for decades of the time they met you just because you were famous.
