As layoffs in the tech sector mount, Stanford Graduate School of Business Professor Jeffrey Pfeffer is worried. Research – by him, and others – has shown that the stress layoffs create takes a devastating toll on behavioral and physical health and increases mortality and morbidity substantially. Layoffs literally kill people, he said.
“Your work will never love you back” is totally true, but I think the core truth is a lot starker, and harder to talk about without sounding like a cartoon.
I think the real work of professionalization (socialization into business norms) is to teach would-be managers that you can only treat workers as people when sharing rewards, and never in sharing risk. When risk arrives in the industry, even if your org is fine, you display your willingness to shunt even *imaginary, latent risk* onto labor
