This “Elon is free to do what he wants on Twitter, and you’re free to move elsewhere” is a very american take.

Elon must comply with European laws and regulations in data protection, anti-trust, anti-discrimination, etc or the EU will seize his property to enforce fines or make Twitter unavailable for EU.

@szbalint i will bet good money he'll just turn it off to the EU

@szbalint this seems kinda naive considering he'd just whip up his right-wing conspiracy theory believing base into action against perceived government overreach

like lol, just imagine the backlash if the current Democrat led American government hit twitter with any sort of regulatory fines or investigations.

@fack @szbalint

Elon's weird nerd fans are no threat to the EU.

@fack @szbalint this is fear mongering defeatism verging on a call for anarchy. I would love the American government to actually be effective against the biggest monopolies, bullies and sadists of our times.
@lizbrownmorgan @szbalint musk's been in violation of the ftc's consent decree for like a few weeks now, I'm not being defeatist, I'm just observing what is and isn't happening.
@fack @lizbrownmorgan @szbalint I see where you’re coming from, but I think what others are saying is that there is a basic amount of accountability that needs to happen to bring Twitter back in line with EU law (and even American law) that isn’t political in other countries. Americans have a habit of politicizing this, and so it feels like nothing’s gonna happen. I think it’s getting to a point where the rule of law needs to be upheld regardless.
@szbalint I wish they would hold him accountable.

@szbalint @SinclairSpeccy I believe it’s referring to free speech and the long standing inability of people to not understand what the first Amendment means.

Basically the first refers to the government can’t censor me (well they do via the FCC and other BS anyways) but private companies can.

So the government can’t ban mastodon (though SCOTUS don’t give a shit about the constitution anymore:() but the dipshit can.

Other various laws might happen to him too. The EU just have better laws.

@szbalint but also so not the "free speech platform" Elon pretended he was going to create. Why was he not happy with limiting freedom of reach on the most objectionable but still legal content which was what he claimed the perfect solution was?

It is clear if it weren't for ElonJet he would not have added this rule. It is his own little kingdom and he'll answer to noone when making up his own rules.

@enmodo @szbalint Elon seems to think that his twitter terms of service, that he changes at a whim, apply to entire world on or off the bird site.

@lizbrownmorgan @szbalint it's probably why Elon wants to bugger off to Mars and declare himself President:

https://www.popularmechanics.com/space/moon-mars/a34525209/spacex-laws-mars-elon-musk-starlink-app/

No doubt if you do anything he doesn't like he'll put you outside until you are sorry for what you have done and have nothing but love for Big Brother...

SpaceX Says There Are No Laws on Mars, So Maybe Elon Musk Will Be President

Hey, who needs rules on the Red Planet?

Popular Mechanics
@szbalint any sense of what timeline that would happen on?
@nberlat I think Twitter will be well bankrupt before that (and not because the EU would move glacially slowly). Twitter doesn’t really have much financial runway, and scaring away journalists and other important content producers is a sure-fire way to drop interest in a platform.
@szbalint @nberlat or his plan is and always was to destroy the platform and end global communications on the platform. He might be succeeding in his own goals… and those of his Saudi funders
@lizbrownmorgan @szbalint @nberlat That is a real and grounded suspicion to have about Twitter.
@lizbrownmorgan @szbalint I think Musk beleives that fascism is popular and will lead to financial success. https://aaronrupar.substack.com/p/elon-musk-destroying-twitter-why
Is Elon Musk evil or simply a fool?

Both. The answer is both.

Public Notice
@szbalint I gotta say I like the second approach more.
@szbalint I can’t wait to see how this unfolds.

@szbalint

QUICK! Someone alert Jacob Rees-Smug. This sounds like a Brexit benefit! 🤣🤣

@szbalint I bet the EU is going to fine or take down the bird site soon, because it has become crazy land.
@opalmirror @szbalint I’d love to know how many people Twitter currently employs in Ireland. Because if it’s close to zero after Elon’s cull, that effectively would mean that he’s lost his leverage over the Irish Data Protection Commission. (Basically, the unwritten agreement seems to be that Big Tech provides jobs in Ireland and the Data Protection Commission looks the other way when it comes to enforcing GDPR.) So, yeah, this could happen. He’s not very smart, is he? :)
@opalmirror @szbalint PS. Neither Twitter or Tesla are on this list so that’s a positive, as far as this goes: https://businessplus.ie/news/biggest-fdi-companies-ireland/
The 10 Biggest Foreign Direct Investment Companies in Ireland

More than one in every 10 people employed in Ireland now work for a foreign direct investment company - here are the 10 biggest.

@szbalint

here's hoping he pulls out of the EU. it is a private company and he can do whatever he likes, he will just have deal with the consequences, just like in the US.

nothing good can come from twitter, not with him in the leading position.

@szbalint Not only compliance with the GDPR, but compliance with the data privacy and protection law of every jurisdiction where Twitter broadcasts or publishes
@szbalint he’s free to do as he pleases within the bounds of the law, and we are free to call him out when he’s a hypocrite. That’s the things these types miss.
@szbalint They *can*. Whether they *will* is yet to be determined. True, he doesn't have the resources of an Apple, Microsoft or Google, but I don't really think they want to tangle with him.
@szbalint
I'm curious what the landscape is in the EU regarding piercing the corporate veil to enforce regulatory compliance. Put another way: I expect twitter to be bankrupt imminently, could the EU regulatory agencies go after the twitter guy's personal assets?
@szbalint
Recalling the speech I got from the corporate lawyer of the last board I was on, the twitter guys is doing an awful lot of things to minimize his separation from the corporate entity of twitter.
@szbalint "his property" Does EU target CEOs directly?
@szbalint The same people who say that 'Elon is free to do what he wants because it's a private company' are the same people complaining that 'Twitter was cancelling and censoring people' before Elon took over.

@szbalint Indeed. And I will dance on its ashes if it ever happens. I’m just not holding my breath :)

(GDPR is basically not enforced at the moment, the Irish Data Protection Commission is a joke that has to be sued into doing its job by @noybeu, and when/if fines are actually doled out, they can easily be written off as a standard cost of doing business. Meanwhile, the policymakers, etc., who should be protecting our rights are eye their lucrative positions at these firms in the coming years.)

@szbalint the EU will save us all from the billionaires and oligarchs the rank assholes of asshole capitalism
@szbalint Has the EU done anything, start an investigation, anything?
German official dedicates legal win against Twitter to Fauci

A German official who won a defamation case against Twitter this week has dedicated his legal victory to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease expert recently targeted by Elon Musk

@szbalint that's because you have a functioning democracy
Twitter is Going Great!

Twitter is Going Great is a project inspired by Web3 is Going Just Great to track the latest examples of how Twitter is actively falling to pieces thanks to its current owner Elon Musk (with special guests Jack Dorsey and the Saudi Arabian royal family).

@szbalint You are not wrong. The problem with Musk is he thinks he’s invincible. He clearly has no real experience of EU regulators.
@szbalint yes!! I wish the US would be the same. I hope the EU will get him
@szbalint Assuming that there aren’t laws like that here in the United States is a very European take. Just sayin’.
@szbalint Americans really have gotten to a place of just letting mega corporations do whatever they want. Part strong man worship. Part ineffectual government. We really need to expect and demand better. Our society does not have to be about abuse from the top trickling down. Thank you for sharing this. Americans need to understand we can improve our structures and systems and expect our government to create a better life for people and planet.
@szbalint here's hoping the EU smacks him down hard and soon.
@szbalint which they won't do, because Elon fired their compliance team his second day running Twitter.

@szbalint Also american take:

"Elon can do whatever he wants with Tesla, so if he blocks your Tesla because you sent him a rude twitt, you can walk on your feet."

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@szbalint The trouble is most Americans, particularly those that follow Musk and Trump, think America is the world. They have no concept that there will be consequences because other countries actually have their own laws and standards…it will be just another attack on their goddamn right to freeze peach.
@szbalint thank you. The idea that a private company with significant influence and reach has no need for oversight is toxic. American capitalism is getting more and more toxic by the day.

@szbalint
I agree with you in theory. In practice, Musk can do enormous damage before legal enforcement reins him in, and we need to be able to do something while we wait for that to happen.
@szbalint also has to comply with Indian laws
@szbalint This would be best case scenario, maybe that would be a wake up call that it's all going down the drain... Right?
@szbalint I am betting right now that when he’s forced to act, he will choose to make Twitter unavailable to EU rather than admit wrong. He would rather break his toy than share it.
@szbalint yeb, Europe doesn't subscribe to the idea of subservience to tech tycoons. Musk will learn some hard lessons in Europe.
@szbalint I'd love to see that.
