Statement from Washington Post Executive Editor Sally Buzbee:

NYT's statement:

"Tonight’s suspension of the Twitter accounts of a number of prominent journalists, including The New York Times’s Ryan Mac, is questionable and unfortunate. Neither The Times nor Ryan have received any explanation about why this occurred. We hope that all of the journalists’ accounts are reinstated and that Twitter provides a satisfying explanation for this action."

CNN:
@drewharwell reinstating these journalists won’t change the fact that twitter is no longer a viable platform for free speech
@AlexPlank @drewharwell this is exactly what musk was saying about the former management.
@drewharwell That's slightly better..which is weird coming from CNN which is owned by a Fox loving billionaire...great times.
@drewharwell @ZuriBella agreed this is the best of the three
@ZuriBella @drewharwell Agreed. The only one of the three that seems to understand that Twitter is likely dead as far as legitimate reporting goes
@drewharwell CNN needs to not play footsie with the Melon and just chuck it in the garbage...
@drewharwell That's much better than the statements just asking for reinstatement of the accounts.
@drewharwell Musk giggled when he saw that. Made silly faces and mocked CNN for the faux professional tone. CNN comes across as weak and feckless with such a mealy mouthed statement.
@drewharwell Elon, if you can’t learn to share your toys, you’ll soon find nobody wants to be near you.
@snowdenwriter @drewharwell It's like, you might own the Hacienda, but no one's paying you for the drugs they buy there and one day maybe they aren't even there, and then you have what?
@snowdenwriter @drewharwell ...what's a club with no crowd?
worse, what do you call a club that lets nazis in

@drewharwell they should just get off it already.

Does Twitter still have any major advertizers?

@awgonnerman @drewharwell They are loosing money quickly. Many are leaving

@drewharwell concerning??

That's it..

Just concerning..

That's no different than 'hopes and prayers'

@drewharwell Me, hoping this results in an [at]CNN[dot]com #Mastodon instance
@drewharwell how about making Twitter an Open Forum. Open Forum Doctrine : When Speech takes place in an Open Forum, that speech can qualify for protection of speech under the First Amendment!!
@SGKAVVAKGS @drewharwell I missed something. What does this have to do with the first amendment?
@pomerance @drewharwell Protection of Speech under the First Amendment! Of course, the part of sharing real-time location is not what I’m referring to as freedom of speech.
@pomerance @drewharwell I mention it because there an escalation of events that are in direct link with freedom of speech. Considering a platform utilizing the slogan of free speech is not considered as an open forum, therefore it’s may not qualify for protection of speech under the first amendment!

@drewharwell Do it CNN, create a Mastodon instance... you can do it!

#twittermigration

@drewharwell I don’t understand why news organizations, from CNN to the smallest weekly rural paper aren’t taking this opportunity to establish their own instances. Ensure free verified speech continues and screw Elon over all at the same time. #elon #dumpthebird #cnn #mastodonisthefuture
@harrisjody @drewharwell
Exactly. Get a server, and you’re done. Set it up so only your people are on your server & the costs will be minimal. People will find you if they want to. Simple as that.
@drewharwell @AtomicCowBell Yes! Not easy, but there’s people who know how to do this. Twitter’s real value, and why #elon is so worried about #mastodon, is that they can verify. You know a tweet (or used to in the before times) from CNN with the blue checkmark or from the Times is real. It can be trusted, insomuch as any info can be trusted. So if you’re CNN, set up an instance and reporters only toot from your instance. That way the public knows it’s verified. Wouldn’t it work?
@drewharwell @AtomicCowBell And don’t stop there. Governments should set up instances so elected officials and departments and agencies an toot important and verified information. It’s probably not perfect but either was Twitter. At least here is not owned by an out of control Bond villain wannabe billionaire. #twitter #elon #mastodonisthefuture
@drewharwell I'm loving this. Leave this dude assembling a taco bed in the rubble of twitter
@drewharwell I wouldn’t want to go back to that site
@drewharwell So they should probably stop providing Musk with free content maybe?
@gloriousnoise @drewharwell Would be even better if all these media outlets actually reported what was going on instead of talking around it and using softening language. The media helped bring us to this moment, normalizing authoritarian behavior. But if we stop to consider media ownership, we can better understand why.
@drewharwell I vehemently disagree with trying to reinstate anybody at Twitter. It should be very obvious what's happening, and journalists should simply leave rather than expect any sense of rationality from Musk.
@drewharwell Why demand to be back on a platform that's fascist? Why pretend you're dealing with a reasonable person.
@ZuriBella @drewharwell For real... If anything, Drew should be happy he's no longer part of a fascist regime...

@drewharwell

Tell Sally to get on Mastodon and stop looking backwards. 😉

Then, tell WaPo's owner that you guys need your own instance. I'm pretty sure he knows where to get cheap cloud platforms. 😁

@BeegyPsi @drewharwell

Definitely because I won't go back there to find news content. My account was also unceremoniously suspended a few months ago. So really. Why?

It's a better use of time and resources to start measuring for drapes in your own house in the neighborhood.

@BeegyPsi @drewharwell Would a Wapo Mastodon Server run on LightSail, EC2s, ECS or EKS?

Be cool if AWS published some Elastic BeanStalk profiles to make standing up Mastodon nodes a Push-Button affair.

@BeegyPsi @drewharwell

Tangent: a while back, I saw a Mastodon thread in which a number of people were pointing out that if media outlets start hosting their own Mastodon instances, chances are that they would not allow journalists who leave their company to automatically export their follower-lists to their new platforms.

I found that point rather thought-provoking.

@athorn @BeegyPsi @drewharwell I would imagine there any journalist worth their investigative salt would dual post their work?
@drewharwell That’s awesome that they step up for you but at this point, would you want to be reinstated?
@drewharwell seems like it would be too late for reinstatement. WP would be tacitly be consenting to Musks editorial control via fear.
@drewharwell I really think each media/news organization should run their own Mastodon instances. Then no single outside entity could block your reporting.
@ryangoodlett @drewharwell I agree, why wouldn't wapo just start their own instance and build a following that can't be pulled out from under them?
@ryangoodlett @drewharwell The WaPo already has its “Mastodon.” It’s called it’s newspaper. Same with NYT or CNN. The benefit of Twitter was all the cross-pollination between journalists and experts.
@ryangoodlett @drewharwell They could still go after you via your hosting service or bandwidth provider. But, yeah, more difficult.
@ryangoodlett @drewharwell that would be great. I could mute everything / everyone associated with the Daily Mail in one click!
@drewharwell why are they begging? And why do they still want to be on Twitter? Twitter is 4chan now
@max @drewharwell I agree. I quit Twitter a few days ago. If mainstream media leaves Twitter, the people will follow.
@drewharwell get in touch with Congress and demand an investigation into Musk and subpoena him to testify before Congress.
@MarkBignell @drewharwell about *what* exactly? Twitter can ban whomever they like. This plays right into musk's narrative that "you were okay with former management banning conservatives".
@drewharwell This is pretty weak from The Washington Post. At least CNN made it clear that they are about to leave Twitter over it.
@drewharwell The Post has power. Demand they wield it. Demand more.
@dcdeejay @drewharwell Or demand that their power be stripped and they be nationalized. Jeff Bezos should not be able to own any news outlet, much less one that is seen as reputable in the mainstream.

@drewharwell

Picture of the Washington Post's share on twitter button from its article announcing your twitter suspension.

I think the Washington Post and all the other news sites with banned journalist should get rid of their share on twitter buttons.

@drewharwell That place is trash. There's other options. Like here...
@drewharwell Washington Post should leave Twitter altogether.
@drewharwell This seems like the wrong response. The Washington Post and its reporters should just shutter their accounts and move on.
It's pretty clear Musk's vision of Twitter looks a lot like a fancy Gab. It's time the media and celebrities stop creating monetizable content for a site that's normalizing hate.
@drewharwell It is nice they have your back.
