In ~2014, my colleague & I argued that social media (esp. Twitter) had become part of the critical infrastructure of disaster response. People were turning to Twitter during crises to share information about impacts and resources. Disaster responders were using the data shared there for situational awareness, and were communicating in real-time with their constituents. Today’s events underscore just how dangerous it is for society to come to rely on private platforms as critical infrastructure.

"It is noteworthy that two of twelve SARS-CoV-2-positive children had a previous laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, dating back three and five months prior to tonsillectomy, indicating that they had prolonged or persisting SARSCoV-2 infection."

I think I must have written 10,000 words over the past three days. Which sounds great, save for the fact that less than a few hundred of them were for the novel.

Busy times. All good. I seem to run on an #ActuallyAutistic cycle where I'm on fire for three to six months and then mostly useless for six weeks. December and the first part of January were those weeks.

I love the smell of Napalm in the morning.

Napalm. What an innocent-sounding, evil, evil word.

While traveling recently, I was talking with a woman who happened to be one of the only other people wearing a mask.

I commented on this and she told me she’s had #covid *six* times because she believed that she’d be fine without a mask since she was vaccinated.

She knows the vaccine helped but wishes she hadn’t been lead to believe that the vaccine made masks unnecessary. Now she wears a #mask everywhere. #longcovid

I'm going to say something unfashionable: Stop shaming folks for seeking "reach" in social media, *particularly* if what they create is substantive and generally good for the world. I've been a freelancer almost all of my life. The advent of social media enabled writers like me to talk directly to interested readers and build communities. If you have a corporate gig, "reach" may seem like a frivolous luxury. For freelancers, it's a necessity - the only job security we have.

It doesn't matter what you were right about: if you advocated for fatalism, nihilism, 'hoaxism', or any other form of ignoring the pandemic and letting it rip, you were wrong.

Do you have any tips for how to manage the balancing act of symptom tracking? Sometimes I get to a point of thinking it’s not worth the spoons to try to keep a record, but it feels like they could be important details
