The Boston University School of Public Health is withdrawing from Twitter.

The dean’s thoughtful, nuanced explanation raises the question: Why are other institutions still there?

Reconsidering our School's Engagement with Twitter

@m_clem My sense is that so many institutions and individuals cannot let go of their audience. Many say "Twitter is still working for me, ignore Elon". I am sure most would leave if there was a way to leave Twitter with your followers.

In my case, I have not shut down my Twitter account but I have stopped posting. I miss the audience but I cannot justify providing any content there.

@antoniofatas Thank you. I am like you and Sandro. I have not deleted it but I’ve largely stopped adding value to the platform. It took me many years to accumulate 50K there and I do wish I could bring some with me. My aversion to the execrable leadership there is the greater force.
@antoniofatas @m_clem not an academic but I've stopped posting, also to "park" on my handle in case things take a turn for the better.

@antoniofatas @m_clem By remaining in #twitter , they are literally endorsing Elon. Full argument here:

You don’t need to stay on Twitter and ‘fight’

Phil's Takes

@m_clem This is really well written.

The spirit of "respectful, open inquiry" does not require any speech that is "demeaning and non-rebuttable, dangerous, or factually false."

The whole point of free speech is to make sure that all ideas get their day in the sun, and that they are only rejected for lack of merit.

Every idea should be defendable with speech that is not "demeaning, non-rebuttable, dangerous, or factually false."

@m_clem Once upon a time it felt cool and catching up with the younger generation for those institutions and officials to be present on social media like Twitter. Not anymore after Elon took over. Even downgrading if they keep being there.
@m_clem Very well written explanation. I wish other institutions would follow.

@m_clem

That is a very thoughtful response by the Dean, which covers the bases of most of the concerns that we, as individuals with moral values, confront in our choice to leave Twitter under the present circumstances.

I think it’s easy to analogize to our own lives, and therefore well worth reading by all, regardless of any connection to BU.

@m_clem This is an area that is not moving fast enough. So many public institutions and utilities use this to notify people of impending conditions. We need them to move to alternatives. Contacting them would help, but even then they will be hesitant to move away until the alternatives start to have impact. Unfortunately, many of them have been suggesting using Facebook/Instagram. Yikes!
@m_clem “I am aware that, in suspending our engagements on Twitter, it may be construed that we are somehow opposed to “free” speech. This is, however, not the case. As an academic community, we are committed to a vision of inclusive debate and free and open inquiry. However, we do not in our community tolerate speech that is demeaning and non-rebuttable, dangerous, or factually false.” 👏👏👏
@m_clem The dean swings a velvet sledgehammer : "The School, and those who, like myself, represent our community by dint of fiduciary responsibility have a different calculus to make than that faced by individual members of our community. We expect that members of our community will make their own choices about how to communicate, without judgement or prejudice; that is as it should be in an academic community where we value discussion and a plurality of perspectives."
@m_clem Excellent! #hhu (my university) should do so too.

@m_clem I keep thinking that schools should consider setting up up their own Mastodon server, restrict access only to folks who are connected to the school, whether that turns out to be just the administrators, or faculty, staff, and students as well.

Microblogging should be treated much like email, shouldn't it?

@m_clem A thousand bravos to Dean Sandro and the rest of the school. Very well articulated and sincere letter.
@m_clem they are not yet on Mastodon?
“While there is, of course, an argument to be made for staying on Twitter to rebut misinformation and call out hate speech, at this time the clearer imperative seems to be to take the unambiguous position that a space which amplifies such speech is a space that as a School, we will disengage from. … Twitter is not essential, only free speech is. We can leave the former and continue embracing the latter. And that is what we will do.”
@m_clem so well written and thoughtful.

@Bossito , és capaz de achar interessante, vai ao encontro do que tens defendido.

Nota: ao tentar editar apaguei uma primeira versão desta msg...ainda falta café neste corpo 😅

@m_clem

@m_clem Exactly! Why aren't more leaving in droves?

@m_clem

@m_clem Respect for this extremely well expressed opinion piece.
@m_clem "does not align with our values" is howI feel about Musk and Twitter. I want nothing to do with Musk or any of his projects.

@m_clem thank you for boosting this. I shared the article on both LinkedIn and Facebook where I am clearly crossed referenced with my college and employer with the following message,

"Both my College and Employer are currently using Twitter as one of theiir communication platforms. It is time to reconsider this."

@m_clem I've been impressed with Galeo's leadership on a lot of issues, this is merely the latest. Makes one proud to be a #BUSPH alum.

@sarahewalsh @m_clem same! Now waiting for #BUSPH to come to #Mastodon!

psst, Dean Galea, there's a @med-mastodon.com if it helps..

@m_clem Definitely worth a read.

@m_clem

The BU research summary for that article is:

"Twitter is run by a narcissistic nutcase who is spewing demonstrably false information. The owner has turned into a troll courting other trolls. KTHXBYE"

@m_clem

My alma mater making good choices.

@m_clem "However, Twitter is not essential, only free speech is."

Dunno if it could've been put better than this.

@m_clem I've been wondering if the right thing to recommend for a College or University re: Mastodon would be to create an instance that's managed by school IT, under their .edu domain, with the public relations folks running the social aspect.

Seems like Mastodon is taking off, and I'd hate to see official higher ed accounts representing schools/colleges come up on third-party servers.

What are people's thoughts on this?

@m_clem an excellent article. Like many, I am finding it hard to fully disconnect from Twitter - I miss hearing from the people I would normally connect with - and as good as #mastodon is, I just don’t seem to see updates from them on here (yes, even those I follow). However, as the dean says, ‘Twitter is not essential, free speech is’.
@m_clem BU is my alma mater. 💪🏼

@m_clem wow 👏👏👏

"Musk mocks the importance of pronouns in respecting someone’s identity and humanity. He also incites opprobrium against a public health professional, Dr. Fauci, who has served the country well for decades through challenging times."

@m_clem That’s a really well written piece.

@m_clem Well written.

“we do not in our community tolerate speech that is demeaning and non-rebuttable, dangerous, or factually false”

Hear, hear!

@m_clem Do you know if anyone is compiling a list of major accounts -- institutions, politicians, celebrities, etc. -- leaving the #BirdSite?
@m_clem Your post here has led to an avalanche of comments from folks (including me...heh) encouraging them to set up an activitypub server)
@m_clem Also, why aren’t more institutions here? Millions of users have moved here, but very few organizations. What are the obstacles?

@m_clem

Nice opinion by Dean Galea.

@m_clem Thanks for sharing this. Well said Sandro Galea! Very helpful, not only for explaining BU's position, but for helping others like myself determine how to respond to the changes at Twitter.
@m_clem Absolutely it is time for us to move away from Twitter now with no doubt.

@m_clem very good article.
Really liked this phrasing:

"However, Twitter is not essential, only free speech is. We can leave the former and continue embracing the latter. And that is what we will do."

@m_clem As a tuition-paying parent, 2 undergrad and a master’s student, I’m very happy to see this. I hope the rest of BU follows suit. Universities need to set the example.
@m_clem This is an instance when a dictator takes over, people can leave. So leave.

@m_clem

i don't think making it worse faster is helpful

@m_clem "Twitter is not essential, only free speech is. We can leave the former and continue embracing the latter."

Eloquent. It's a good world still.
