It's perfectly reasonable to say that the state should not fund public universities at the levels it used to. I disagree and think the slow motion privatization of public higher ed is bad, but so be it. What's not reasonable is to expect that public universities like UW - Madison will be subject to any and all state regulations - of an increasing stringency & intrusion - while the public funding continually declines as a share of total resources. Unfunded mandates are bad.

Railroads lobbied for the right to carry hazardous & flammable materials on trains with Civil War-era braking systems, while slashing their workforces by 30%, leaving employees exhausted & rails understaffed...

Rail Companies Blocked Safety Rules Before Ohio Derailment

The train derailment came after Norfolk Southern helped convince government officials to repeal brake rules and lobbyists watered down safety regulations.

This is objectively very funny.

Twitter is falling apart. I currently can’t follow anyone or post anything. In the midst of this, Musk had a meeting to find out why his engagement is plummeting.

An engineer looked into the code, found no issues, and speculated it’s because he’s less popular.

Musk fired him on the spot. 👶🏼

That could've been much worse. Not sure it was of much value other than getting me to deeply mistrust the business writing of Patrick Lencioni.
At least there hasn't been much glorification of "The jerk Factor". Christ, that essay's a real piece of work. DARVO on a f'ing Triscuit.

Dear Management Consultant,

Asking 'Does your team most resemble a golf, baseball, or basketball team?" pretty solidly communicates to me that I'm not really welcome in this discussion.

I'd ask that maybe you revisit your analogy and find one closer to how engineers, technicians, and administrators of diverse ages, races, and genders actually work with each other.

I have absolutely no context for this organizational analogy.

the sisters of mercy’s website looks like it was last updated in about 1995, and the (extensive!) writings about the technical ins and outs of their electronic setup would seem to bear that out. it’s like getting into a time machine.  https://www.the-sisters-of-mercy.com/tech/tech-i.htm

you know, we're actually making a huge mistake by publicly criticizing all the useless AI shit coming out these days

we should just nod our heads and say "oh it's so brilliant and great" and watch every company who bases themselves on it go bankrupt as it tells people the first ingredient in ice cream is hot sauce

i simply propose we stop doing QA work for these idiots
