If you’re wondering about Mastodon’s impact, Twitter is now automatically marking links to mastodon as “sensitive” (aka dangerous) and forcing users who get them to “appeal” the claim. In case Elon didn’t seem desperate enough for you already…
@joshuatopolsky Surprised it took this long.
@WarnerCrocker there was a similar move several weeks ago after people created fake Mastodon websites redirecting to malicious websites to make the real Mastodon websites flagged @joshuatopolsky
@joshuatopolsky I am going to assume that he lost so many of the largest, most active accounts over the weekend that Elon will push out several more blatantly fabricated user charts that try to pretend he is not captain of the Titanic repeatedly ramming his ship into the iceberg.
@Danielsand @joshuatopolsky
...and then running the ship astern, and ramming the iceberg again and again.
@psetnik @joshuatopolsky after smashing throught the icerberg, sinking the ship in the process, he then (from his private rescue yacht ignoring all the screams of the dying people around him) takes a photo of the tunnel he built in the icerberg and exclaims how it is the greatest thing ever invented. How it will revolutionize travel.

@Danielsand @joshuatopolsky

Several people criticized him for this egotistical and useless display...

...G-d rest their souls.

@joshuatopolsky How dare you post about a competitor
@hack13 @joshuatopolsky and that's the sad thing, i wouldn't consider this a "competitor" just because it's similar. It's like saying Facebook is a competitor of Instagram.

@joshuatopolsky

You’ve got to be kidding me! What happened to free speech Elon?

@joshuatopolsky only "selective" free speech for bird site 😂
@joshuatopolsky I'm not seeing this behavior today. Wonder if they were testing something.
@JeffHicks seems like they may be targeting some of the larger servers? Not clear obviously since it's a totally obscured transaction at twitter

@JeffHicks @joshuatopolsky Possibly based on manual reporting? The link above shows as “sensitive” for me when I view it logged out but when logged in. If I view my own post just created it does not show as sensitive (yet).

Twitter
@jpanzer @joshuatopolsky Using Tweetdeck I haven't seen any flagging, but it wouldn't be unexpected.

@joshuatopolsky @JeffHicks
It happened to me.

The tweets I had previously posted-- and posted AFTER the flagged tweet-- about #Mastodon are unflagged. The one that I tweeted in response to an Elton John tweet was flagged.

Interestingly, #Elon had personally responded to Elton's tweet after I had tweeted. When I go to click on my tweet, it says it's hidden "The tweet you reported." (So supposedly I reported my own tweet?!?)

My *theory* is that #Musk himself saw my tweet and flagged it.

@joshuatopolsky @JeffHicks seems to have gone from issuing warns linking to large servers to blocking links in twitter dms
@joshuatopolsky Now is the time to post links referring to this platform and POST. I say #callthemout on marking things bad with questions that will encourage more conversation. Use #tags?

@joshuatopolsky

Interesting, as long as I remain locked, none of this stuff happens to me. I'd be banned by now otherwise for the stuff I've tweeted re: Musk and twitter lol

@joshuatopolsky close ur bird account, this is the way. ❌️🐦

@joshuatopolsky

I use wheretofind.me and pop that in my twitter and other profiles (see my profile here for an example) so then it's an indirect link which twitter is less likely to see.

@joshuatopolsky It’s not just links to Mastodon. It happened to me just using the word mastodon in another context. My link was actually to a story about mastodon DNA being sequenced at the MIT Technology Review
@TimH @joshuatopolsky someone’s fragile ego threatened by an extinct animal : )
@TimH @joshuatopolsky It may be time to start saying “elephantsite” on Twitter.

@joshuatopolsky @TimH

Had to test this out myself and lol!!!!

@joshuatopolsky @PhilipMartin Wow. At least I know it wasn’t just me! Thanks for the confirmation!

@TimH @joshuatopolsky

I doubt they’ll like my appeal. While I did edit out my original f-bomb, I did ask if Elmo was “so effing cucked that he is afraid of the word Mastodon?”

I expect a suspension, but it will be worth it, I think!

@PhilipMartin @joshuatopolsky Ha. My appeal wasn’t very nice either. I definitely remember calling it pathetic

@PhilipMartin @joshuatopolsky @TimH

I added Mastodon links to several bios not tweets. No issue, so far.

@joshuatopolsky @TimH @PhilipMartin somebody who still has an account over there should be like “Y’know, truth social, Trump’s social media site, or as we like to call it, the Mast O’Don, sure seems to be doing poorly” and see if that gets flagged

@PhilipMartin @joshuatopolsky @TimH Looks like they were ok with your appeal and have removed the warning... I'm not seeing it now.

I did a quick search for "mastodon" too and I'm not seeing it on other posts (maybe they realized how pathetic that was and removed it).

@Bluedonkey @joshuatopolsky @TimH

This is what I see right now:

@PhilipMartin @joshuatopolsky @TimH Apparently, I had content warnings disabled. Don't recall doing that, but maybe I did.

@Bluedonkey @joshuatopolsky @TimH

No worries! They haven't responded to my appeal and given my negligible following/status on Twitter, I doubt it is any sort or priority.

"Respond to randos appealing auto keyword content warnings" is way, WAY down the list.

They've got to keep up with an ever changing kaleidoscope of phrases and words that Elmo finds emasculating or insulting, before they get to my little post.

Elmo only has like 800 workers left to keep up with everything, right?

@PhilipMartin @joshuatopolsky @TimH

Just went to check (00.12 UK time) and sure enough:

@TimH @ClaireCopperman @joshuatopolsky

Haha! Thanks for checking! I haven’t gone to The Fowl Place today to see if they responded to my appeal. They didn’t suspend me over my insult to Dear Leader Elmo either, though, so I guess, much like the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, we’ll call it a draw?

@PhilipMartin @TimH @joshuatopolsky
Yeah, I can't be bothered to appeal. It's funnier with the warning!
@PhilipMartin @joshuatopolsky @TimH
Another from me - it is equal parts ludicrous and hilarious.
#Birdsite
@TimH @joshuatopolsky Wow the wealthy white man-child raised on apartheid atrocities is really sensitive about his site being abandoned. This fits with his previous behavior of lashing out with accusations of pedophilia against random people who disagree with him.
@TimH @joshuatopolsky that is what happens when you step on Enol's pecker.
@TimH @joshuatopolsky The richest man in the world is threatened by a true community.
The very mention makes him shiver.
@TimH @joshuatopolsky no. Seriously? This is hilarious!!!
@TimH @joshuatopolsky If I ever log back on to that accursed web site, I'm just going to start posting like crazy about mastodons and the science of understanding their biology and environment.
@aral @TimH @joshuatopolsky just tried to post the word over there and it went thru so it must only be a certain amount of accounts that are getting censored
@TimH @joshuatopolsky. This happened to me as well. I responded and now the post has been unflagged... but it took several days... 🙄
@TimH @joshuatopolsky counterpoint: every link to the tech review should have a content warning on it
