So I’ve let this account languish. I’m on Post (@popehat) and I’ve been avoiding Mastodon only because I need to figure out how to switch servers (this one is blocked all over). I’m logged in on my iPad but, hilariously, I can’t find where I wrote my password and the “recover password” function isn’t working or is super-slow to send an email. Anyway. I intend to build up and use a Mastodon account now that I’m leaving Twitter but it might take a bit.
@popehat That's good news from this corner!
@popehat We'll be here when you do!
@popehat The water's fine, if a bit sparsely populated.
@popehat you can also share cat pictures here. Mastodon loves cat pictures.
@bookish @popehat
Excellent. I refuse to be a part of any community that does not like cat pictures.
@popehat It will be great to have you here!
@popehat I found you using https://www.movetodon.org it is really good at finding who you follow at twitter here on mastodon. I followed you. Hope to see you around

@popehat Every time I've looked into instance blocks, it's pretty much always some very small niche one doing it that has <200 users. The top 20 or so account for over half of all users and are unlikely to end up blocking each other. But yes, it is a messy situation for sure.
@elforesto @popehat I would have to agree that the number of actual users prevented from viewing masthead.social might be smaller than you think. Some instances are quick to block all journalists but most of the Fediverse won’t really block for anything less than clear harassment or a lack of enforcement of basic moderation of an instance.

@popehat Awesome to see you here Ken!

I was on Post too, but after seeing this asked them to cancel my account (which they haven't done yet)

@popehat Phew! I saw your Bye note just last night and made sure to get on the wait list for Post just in case you didn’t come back here. I’m #8900+ on the list. I do hope you can get your acct worked out here. You’re a must-follow for me.
@popehat Hope you'll settle on Mastodon and not Post which as a VC-backed SV startup is going to inevitably move in a direction to optimize returns to VCs and not users.
What a waste, man. You could've turned over the old Twitter acct to an AI whose prime directive is to warn the public of the Great Pony Menace. ;)
Anyhow, welcome--for you really are moving now--to an entirely different hellsite. May it be more entertaining and less irksome than the last.
Gonna be really funny that Josh Barro absolutely refuses to use Mastodon, and you absolutely refuse to use Twitter, so the only interactions we'll actually see between you two will be subtweets and joint appearances on Serious Trouble.
Anyhow, just make sure to announce on Twitter and Substack where you *actually* end up going long-term. Your followers are gonna want to follow you.
@popehat I recommend "writing" down your password in a password manager - I use https://1password.com.
Password Manager & Extended Access Management | 1Password | 1Password

@popehat I can see you just fine from here.
@popehat when you get your new account set up, please put the address in your Twitter bio so that it's easy for automated migration tools to find you
@popehat Great to hear! Your account is one of my favs!
@popehat We're here for you. I'm still on Twitter (only for the self-curated feed of notification follows--the "trending" column is a hot mess of right-wing conspiracy theories and response to EM blather) but also on Post and Masto. Trying to figure out where my peeps are landing.
@popehat I can’t tell you how stoked I am to hear that you intend to post over here as well. w00t!
@popehat I’ve been waiting for you to appear! I can finally leave the bird app.
@popehat hope you find it, and glad to have you over here!
@popehat
It's good to see you here. I got myself a 12-hour lockout yesterday and spent some extra time on both Mastodon and Post. It seems inevitable that the HellSite will probably implode into a Parler or TruthSocial style of online presence sooner or later. Unless, of course, Elon (Ha!) comes to his senses and learns how to actually run a business.

@popehat welcome aboard. It has been both easier and harder to get started than I expected.

Lot of features I love. Hate the not having a reply quote button but whatever.

Also the web interface is way better than the mastodon app from the apple app store.

@popehat When you move, does the new account need to be blank or can you create and use the new one before migrating this one to it?
@gdbassett @popehat it doesn't need to be blank. A move here is really just a redirect from the old to the new account.
@popehat yes please post on mastodon too. I find post confusing and I would rather just read news in one place.
How to Move Data Between Mastodon Accounts

YouTube
@popehat Literally the first thing that’s made me consider joining Post.
@popehat @paulroub Except it’s the usual suspects backing it and in the end it is just another walled garden that are going to be selling your data to the highest bidder either directly or indirectly. techcrunch.com/2022/11/28/post…
TechCrunch is part of the Yahoo family of brands

@popehat understand, and see you on the other side.
@popehat It's a shame your server is managed in a manner that results in it being blocked all over. It is purportedly for journalists, so I'm not sure what the admin is thinking.

@popehat be sure you’re trying to log in at masthead.social. Many struggle with resetting passwords only to find out they were trying to log into the wrong instance.

If you need help migrating instances I have a couple of helpful links.

@popehat Post appears to have many of the same structural issues as Twitter: centrally managed, funded by a political ideologue, etc. The features look good, but they were good on Twitter too.
@popehat I am so glad you're making the move. I just can't stomach Twitter anymore, and am hoping more of my follows will find their way here eventually.
@popehat awesome news! I’ve been missing my @popehat fix so so bad. 🎉
@popehat that's good news for me, as you were one of the last things drawing me back to the old place.

@popehat I switched servers to actually federate with Masthead. Good times.

In short: create a new account on another server, add the old account as an account alias on the new one in your preferences, go back to the old account, start a migration to the new one.

@popehat I'm a bit skeptical of Post because of some of their initial policies, so I'm really glad to hear that you'll be on here too!
@popehat Please don't give up just yet! It has been a little wonky but mostly minor issues I think. But having your voice here would be great!
@popehat incidentally, I am planning to run a private server. The domain is official.community (so you would be [email protected]). It won't be open registration, the idea is to create a safe space for brands and verified people to avoid the problem you just identified - being on a public server that gets defederated through no fault of your own
@popehat Just getting setup, but will make an announcement using @info

@popehat

This is why the powers that be have given us password managers!

@popehat It takes some getting used to, but it's worth the trouble.

Still almost 99% Nazi free, as far as I can tell.

@popehat Glad to hear you'll be here more! Hope they get your password to you.

If you want, you can set up an account on a new Mastodon instance now and tell people "having trouble with migration For Reasons but I am moving to [X]." And then migrate your masthead.social acct to the new acct whenever you get the password sorted.

All migration does is move your followers; you can move your follows yourself, & most active followers will move themselves if you announce it at various times of day.

@popehat Yay - your in-depth threads were missing a bit around here!
