Over on The Bird site, I started getting a bunch of right wing tweets in my feed because I happen to follow journalists who monitor that site. It was like turning on your faucet at watching dirty gray water come out. Blech!
@georgetakei Danger Will Smith, danger.
@georgetakei dirty gray water? That isn't bad, I was expecting diarrhea.
@kkeller @georgetakei everything is dirty gray without light
@kkeller @georgetakei T'was the great Cholera Twitter Outbreak of 2022, when a musky smell invaded the Bird app and people left, both staff, and community members.
@georgetakei You can leave any time, George. Oh my!
@TradingPlacesResearch @georgetakei yes. Large accounts from the center left are keeping Twitter afloat by staying

@ewarrenfan @TradingPlacesResearch @georgetakei
The “fight” for Twitter is a mistake. Musk will keep tweaking the algorithm until everyone is radicalized.

Move your community to safer ground and delete.

@ewarrenfan @TradingPlacesResearch @georgetakei I wasn't a big account, but I still didn't want to be impersonated. I 0'd it out and left it locked for a month. But yesterday I went back and deactivated. I decided that I don't even want to exist over there any more. No point.

@the_Effekt @ewarrenfan @TradingPlacesResearch @georgetakei I just locked my account. I am trying to get a mass #Twexit #TwitterMigration date--perhaps Dec. 7th, but that would be too soon for folks to move here, or to Post--but it appears I don't have much engagement there.

A far more influential account than mine would need to lead that charge.

@ewarrenfan @TradingPlacesResearch @georgetakei it would be better if the left leaning accounts stayed. It’s best to contest ideas that you don’t believe in instead of letting them grow without pushback.
@Legitmurican
At this point they should just set their accounts to allow only replies from those they reply to. My main feed is acircle jerk of stuff elon and his stans tweet. It's already a cesspool of hate and stupidity
@ewarrenfan @TradingPlacesResearch @georgetakei
@georgetakei same. I guess the Algorithm is dead.
@georgetakei It sucks over there. Glad you are over here now.
@georgetakei Some of us have taken to calling it the fowl place.
@georgetakei Twitter is just no longer OK. Personally it’s totally unethical to stay. I dont understand why so many want to work so hard to prop up Elon Musk and the business he poisoned. Sometimes moves are necessary fresh changes that are sorely welcome. I’m old enough to have learned that staying in a bad (very bad) relationship is only toxic, self-harming, and not worth 1 iota of the losses it causes because of false loyalties. So glad you’re here!!!!!!
@Mutterbaum
Many people just don't have a choice. If you're an artist and have built up a following over there who happen to pay your rent, stepping over into the unknown and hoping enough of your customers come along before you go broke is a scary prospect. Same for political activists - Iran is just waiting for the protests to become internationally invisible.
@Teskariel Thank you for an other different perspective! I speak for no one but myself. There is no debate here. It is so important collaborative free speech allows room for everyone to have their own opinions and experiences, and not speak over each other or nullify someone else’s when it is different :)
@georgetakei The ads are pretty hilarious now too. Today: the head condom.
@ClariceSnarling You sure that wasn't just Kanye?

@georgetakei Happening to all of us. I am blocking them, not muting them in the hope it helps.

While I am building a presence here, I am still active on twitter because I believe a year from now Elon will have left his broken toy and somebody else will be in charge.

@georgetakei

I see the same increase in right wing leaning posts over there. I think it's a result of the increase in percentage of right wingers as the number of reasonable people quit or stop posting.

When most of what Twitter is made of is sewage, you're going to see more sewage.

@SeanPLynch @georgetakei I also think (in my case anyway) that the more I was responding to the idiocy, lies and stupidity of a category of poster, the more of their ilk the algorithm pulled into my feed. It was like the echo chamber became the inverse. Mastodon is better for my blood pressure lol.
@georgetakei agreed. My time-line filled with racists and right wing extremists. All of a sudden things were death con 5. It was then that I shut both my accounts down.
@georgetakei same! good to know why it happened, so gross

@georgetakei the because "so-and-so Follows" this trash monster to keep tabs on them, Twitter deems YOU must see their garbage too.

One of my least favorite features of the bird site, especially when the algorithm is already burying the people I actually follow because I want to see *them*.

Not the loons someone else is monitoring.

@georgetakei it’s very noticeable, I keep my twitter purposefully politics free - it should be mainly art - but recently it’s a lot of Elon and other right wing figures none of whom seem to be connected to anyone I follow.
@georgetakei This site is great, if you want to follow what’s going on on the bird site without visiting it 😀. https://twitterisgoinggreat.com/
Twitter is Going Great!

Twitter is Going Great is a project inspired by Web3 is Going Just Great to track the latest examples of how Twitter is actively falling to pieces thanks to its current owner Elon Musk (with special guests Jack Dorsey and the Saudi Arabian royal family).

@georgetakei so many blocking opportunities, so little time.
@georgetakei i just listened to your commentary track on your debut Adventure Time episode as Ricardio. ik that's off-topic but you slayed ‼️ 🤷🏻‍♀️
@georgetakei I thought that having briefly viewed the bird site today. Ignore them thay clearly have nothing better to do
@georgetakei
It's like being in Flint, MI or Jackson, MS... yet more toxic.
@georgetakei Birds can’t fly with only a right wing. They need a left one, too.
@georgetakei I saw an advertisement for Prager U once and I was just done with it.

@georgetakei What I find interesting is since I've been off Twitter even my Google news has been affected. I'm not sure if it's a direct result of me not using Twitter or if it's a result of the midterms concluding. However there is a discernable lack of politically charged and racially charged content in my Google feed on my phone now since I left Twitter about 3 weeks ago.

#twitter #politics #news #twitterexodus

@sosa4k @georgetakei Fascinating. Not something I expected but it makes sense, now that I think about it. Google indexes Twitter. I'm sure that bias from Twitter was impacting lots of Google's algorithms. Removing the volume from Twitter likely lessened the importance associated with very politically/racially charged articles shown by Google News.
@hackerfactor @georgetakei yes agree. I think also because marketing platforms target individuals based on criteria there is probably overlapping criteria to target individuals using data from both platforms based on what you are viewing... Lots of targeting campaigns. I think my reduction in usage of Twitter reduced my footprint from being targeted as well as the regular Google ingestion of content on Twitter.
@georgetakei I have a few accounts still there that are just parked, non-engagement and not following anyone. But now through those accounts I’m getting unwelcome notifications all day long from far-right sources I never followed to begin with. It’s like #elon selected a bunch of them for automated amplification. It feels like a Cliffs Notes version of OAN.
@georgetakei still trying to find accounts here. Please continue to do follow Friday! Just found @Jojofromjerz
@georgetakei All the good people left, so you are just seeing the dregs that stayed behind.
@georgetakei That happened to me but stopped when I switched to Latest tweets from Home.
@georgetakei and then a shower is needed .. 😬🤢
@georgetakei I'm still mourning the loss of morning twitter, but I don't regret my decision to delete it all. But I only had 18K followers. Not the millions you have.
@georgetakei Yes. I stuck it out til the election, difficult as it was. I was relieved to get locked out of the account two days ago after comments I made about Elmo.It just became un fun.
@georgetakei I just now turned notifications off. I haven't been back to that cesspool.

@georgetakei I followed a link from Mastodon to get context and ... hoo boy. It's changed. It's fundamentally changed.

Glad to be here. Glad you're here as well.

@georgetakei

An extra layer of horribleness:

Every time you simply *view* one of those tweets, it increases the impression for the tweet being viewed. And, impressions is an important number used by many, including people like Charlie Kirk, to fundraise & entice donors (as *proof* that they're reaching a large audience).

@georgetakei It’s exactly what Musk wanted.
@georgetakei I’m guessing you’ve never gone camping in an RV. Grey water comes out of the sinks. Black water comes out of the toilet. I’m sure what you were seeing was black water.
@georgetakei did you also get forced to see Elon's tweets?
@georgetakei Why are you still hanging out there? Curious .. ?
@georgetakei gotta use the 'Latest Tweets' view, always
@georgetakei Bird site has been showing me almost exclusively right wing pundits lately, when my only engagement with them is calling them out.
@georgetakei The amount of indignation in that thread was palatable.
@georgetakei Same here and he also boosted his own tweets to the top of my feed. No reason at all to be there anymore
@georgetakei because I respond to many of the fascists on that site, the first posts I see when I log on are their more recent posts. Yuck
@georgetakei yep I had “boners” in my #bird feed. Wrong audience
