Hello!

I am a #constitutional law #professor who specializes in #speech, #religion, and women's rights.

I look at the First Amendment through an equality lens.

My latest article argues that public school teachers do NOT have a free speech right to misgender students: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4284105

Today I am working on a symposium piece about religious liberty challenges to #abortion bans.

@CarolineMalaCorbin btw. great example to show the edit function which is available here. Got no idea why I called you Sarah (been doing this for hours now maybe that’s why) anyway , I edited it : welcome Caroline 😊
@Piff123 Hi! If I want to use whotofollow.tibor.net, where I can write hashtags to find people with the same interests. I don't see the option. Is it because it's Friday? 🤪

@TuSocialMedia hola Lydia, que tal 😊
https://whotofollow.tibor.net/ is a tool to find people depending on your followers. It does not work for interest (yet) maybe talk to @Tibor

But regarding #womenscience I found a lot on yr server - have you checked https://mstdn.science/tags/WomeninScience ?

And there are several “science” instances - like https://fediscience.org/public/local . Check it out and have fun!

Gracias

@CarolineMalaCorbin oh Jeepers H Creepers, is the gQp trying to make misgendering people a First Amendment Issue now?

@Billiam

Several teachers and professors have brought lawsuits challenging school policies

The Sixth Circuit held that forcing a professor to use pronouns matching his students gender identity violated his academic freedom.

He had been using a Ms. or Ms. honorific for all his students except for one (transgender) women, who he just called by her last name.

@CarolineMalaCorbin their unalienable right to be purposefully and meaninglessly despicable... Ugh...
@CarolineMalaCorbin Good article. Will welcome forthcoming article. As a retired public school and college educator, teachers’ free speech rights are severely curtailed in professional autonomy and ownership/development of practitioner knowledge in the classroom. https://insightjournal.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/4-The-Impact-of-Academic-Freedom-Policies-on-Critical-Thinking-Instruction.pdf
@CarolineMalaCorbin welcome to #mastodon Prof. Corbin! @nova is definitely worth following if you aren’t following them already.

@CarolineMalaCorbin Do I understand correctly that this is only important for public school teachers, because there's no controversy whether a private school can fire teachers who misgender students (as opposed to public schools, which are for part of the government for some value thereof)?

@robryk

Correct.
The Constitution limits what the state can do (which can include public schools).

The Constitution does not limit private actors.

@CarolineMalaCorbin

That’s a good idea. There are plenty of free-thinking women who do not subscribe to the religion that is putting laws on their bodies. A theocratic law is unconstitutional.
