F/M/K Mastodon Post Hive
@Emilynussbaum Kill Hive because it's stealing people I want on this site, Fuck Post because I've never heard of it and who doesn't like an anonymous romp now and then, which leaves me married here.
@la_panique 👆 this Mastoblaster gets it @Emilynussbaum 👍
@Emilynussbaum Heh. Shit disturbing across the platforms.
@Emilynussbaum emily plz tell us normies what Post is like
@501goose Pretty good! Twitter-like, with a great, clean design. Feels more journalistic/newsy than Hive, which has more TV folks and book people, at least in my experience. The Post feed is wonky and the platform is missing some elements, like notifications, but I know they're working on it. It's been interesting to compare & contrast!
@Emilynussbaum Did I just wander into the Howard Stern show? 😀
@Emilynussbaum F Hive, M Mastodon, K Post. This may change!

@tim @Emilynussbaum

I think this is my ranking

Hive seems kind of down for fun, while Post is super clean -- maybe toooooo clean

@clive @Emilynussbaum I heard you can say the F word on Post now

On the other hand, Hive has basically no staff for moderation. Probably best to move once it stops being fun

If all my Hive people went to Post, I’d go there too

@tim @Emilynussbaum

I really do wonder how those new centralized networks will handle moderation. The problems and judgement calls come *fast* and *frequent* once you get even more than a handful of users ...

@Emilynussbaum gotta go rogue

Mastodon Flickr Hive

flickr is the best social software of all time

@amy @Emilynussbaum

Flickr is kind of astounding, right?

Founded in 2004, and still chuggin' along ...

... and still sort of slightly relevant and slightly used

What else of that vintage? Not really Blogger; apart from a handful of long-maintained blogs, it hasn't seen much use since before Obama was president

Twitter, Facebook, etc. all came years after Flickr

It's the trilobite of social media

@clive @amy @Emilynussbaum Tumblr is of a similar vintage, and also went through the Yahoo digestive tract.

@fraying @amy @Emilynussbaum

It indeed did!

An intertube service must be durable indeed to withstand Yahoo's stomach acids

@clive @fraying @amy @Emilynussbaum but speaking of properties Yahoo digested, I will always, always rue the day Yahoo announced they would be sunsetting del.icio.us, and it got sold to a couple of entrepreneurs who didn’t recognize its value in its existing form, and utterly destroyed it. What a waste.

@fraying @clive @amy @Emilynussbaum

I very rarely upload to flickr these days (maybe a handful in the last week just because, but a year before that). But I visit the site at least once a week to find my old photos and I love how it's so easy to do that. I should visit more. I see that many of my old flickr friends are still there!

@curiouskiwi @fraying @amy @Emilynussbaum

I use Creative Commons flickr photos in my blog posts all the time! It's a massive well of generously donated stuff

@fraying @clive @amy @Emilynussbaum if I could bring back one long deprecated Flickr feature, it’d be the way you could leave footnotes all over a picture. Easy to miss if you just scrolled by, but one serendipitous tap and you were drawn deeper into the story of that photo. We lost so much context when that feature went away, though I don’t remember if it was before or after the Yahoo! acquisition.
@fraying @clive @amy @Emilynussbaum and Tumblr! The second life it’s had, partly because even those of us who don’t use it regularly anymore but used to keep getting reminded of it by screenshots of Tumblr posts in FB meme groups, go to check on these threads we remembered, and discover that the story has grown since the last time it went around. I’m intrigued that they’re adding support for ActivityPub.

@ursamajor @fraying @amy @Emilynussbaum

Right -- I forgot all about that!

When did they get rid of that?

@clive @Emilynussbaum not only that, but smugmug actually rolled back a lot of the changes y made to it — y broke it. it’s purer and older because it was restored.

flickr has a bunch of ways for folks to do things together and, alone or together, create long-lasting value that no other social media does

@amy @Emilynussbaum

I love finding photos on Flickr that were uploaded like 16 years ago

The resolution and color tone on those older digital image are distinct, it's almost like looking at old polariods

@clive @Emilynussbaum yupppp

which is why so many of us are now into vintage digital cameras, me included. it’s a whole thing. i have a collection!

@amy @Emilynussbaum

omg, I didn't realize that. It makes sense, though!

@Emilynussbaum Fuck Hive (so cute and young) / Marry Mastodon (takes work, but is dependable, and gets you) / Kill Post (it's just too underpowered to be of use)
@Emilynussbaum What's Post? Another social network? What a terrible name for SEO, can't even search for it!
@Emilynussbaum
Just realized there was a time in the late 2000’s when every week brought a new episode of
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Justified.
Was this the sweet spot of the television switch to streaming? Before the utter proliferation of 6 episode series dumped all at once?
@MikeKaspari See, my nostalgic lineup was The Office, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock and Community—I can't believe we got a whole new set of them every week
@Emilynussbaum
Wow. It *was* a golden age. Was this about when you started at #TheNewYorker?
@Emilynussbaum I wanted to marry Hive, but it seems it has killed itself? Fuck.
@joshdobbin Very frustrated! I really want it to come back
@Emilynussbaum I know! Both out of the sense of "Bad News Bears/Little Engine That Could" kind of plucky, underdog quality of its whole story, but also because it really has (has? maybe soon?) a nice, friendly feel to the whole thing that this place somehow does not, quite. Weird how that goes.
@joshdobbin @Emilynussbaum I hear that on the vibes! I think it's partially the layout, partially this was Clearly Built By Devs? (Whenever I have an issue on here my dev of a spouse looks at it and goes "Ah yes, This Makes Sense" and explains it at light speed.)
@DessertGeek @Emilynussbaum YES. Very "Doozers from Fraggle Rock" energy.
@Emilynussbaum This is tough because I loved being on Hive, it's just... happy? Cute? But the security issues were just so bad and not really being addressed in a timely manner.
