Back in 2020-2021, I wrote a book about how to survive scary hard times by writing your own stories and getting lost in the imaginary worlds you create.

I feel more than ever that making up stories can help save us and keep us whole.

So this feels like good timing: Never Say You Can't Survive is just $2.99 in ebook formats for just one day.

Deleting your Facebook account is the privilege of those who don’t have kids in school, and don’t have to communicate with groups of people over 40. Instead, maybe we should be working with schools (pre-K through 16) and community organizations to help them find an effective mass communication platform that isn’t run by the worst people on the planet.
Not cool.

So, KOSA having passed in the Senate -- and now awaiting House approval -- it's evermore worth grappling with the morass this legislation may well plunge us into

here's a terrific summary by @mmasnick -- seriously worth reading, clear and simple and precise: https://www.techdirt.com/2024/07/26/the-kids-online-safety-act-and-the-tyranny-of-laziness/

The Kids Online Safety Act And The Tyranny Of Laziness

There is some confusion about whether the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) regulates content or design on digital platforms like Instagram or TikTok. It’s easy to see why that is, because the bill’s a…

@flashesofpanic if you’re wondering where my post and reply to you on FB about said marathon measurements went, it got zucked! Wanted to thank you for the informed perspective :-) and in case you didn’t get to see it before it got blackholed, also wanted to share the other problems with this weekend’s #sfmarathon races, as well as how my perspective on running has changed over the last six months https://ursamajor.dreamwidth.org/908558.html

Sticking my trunk back in given the Metaverse technology has ā€œdecidedā€that my oh so controversial posts about improperly-measured half marathon courses and yujacha hamantaschen are attempts to ā€œgather sensitive information from others as a violation of our Cybersecurity standards,ā€ or to ā€œget likes, folliws, shares, or video views in a misleading way.ā€ Faugh.

Hello! How are you all surviving our modern hellscape? I hope you’re doing things that bring you joy; tell me about them.

There is an entire data broker industry *in America* that sells giant databases of personally identifiable information from which there's no way to opt-out. That should be made illegal and punishable by law. Protect our digital privacy here at home from predatory American companies and then maybe I'll believe that going after foreign companies is anything other than xenophobia.

Thinking about how FEMA allocated a $3.5m grant to remove eucalyptus trees and lower fire risk in the East Bay Hills, but a local group opposed to the change sued and successfully got them to cancel the grant. https://www.berkeleyside.org/2016/09/19/fema-pulls-funding-for-tree-clearing-in-berkeley-hills

Now, residents of this same area complain that they can't get homeowner's insurance due to fire risk: https://www.berkeleyside.org/2019/09/09/insurance-companies-give-the-boot-to-berkeley-hills-homeowners-citing-fire-risk

FEMA pulls funding for tree clearing in Berkeley Hills

Funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to remove trees in the Berkeley/Oakland hills for fire management have been pulled after a successful suit by a community group to stop the plan. FEMA withdrew $3.5 million in funding to UC Berkeley and the City of Oakland as part of a settlement agreement between the agency […]

If you live in Oakland, sign this petition to move money from the OPD to street safety infrastructure improvements.

Real protected bike lanes would protect bicyclists from traffic violence. Police enforcement, in the rare cases they bother to do anything, won't turn back time after you've already gotten hurt.
