Let it be known the account @github has been claimed by the official organization GitHub
@jerry I won't believe it until the capitalization of the H is corrected. 😛
@jerry Seems like your server is the place to be!

@jerry @github

But how will I know they are official without a stupid blue checkmark??

@nindrene @jerry @github

There is actually a formal verification system in Mastodon, but they haven't done it.

You put a link in your bio, then add an certain html tag to that page linking back to your profile, and a green check shows up -- not next to your id, but next to the link.

@RL_Dane @nindrene @github it’s been 12 hours. I don’t think they’ve logged into the account yet. Let’s give them some time.

@jerry @github

How can this be independently verified?

@derickc @github unless/until they add verification to their profile, you’ll have to trust me (or not) that it’s them

@jerry @github

Ty. I've seen and heard of several fake profiles here - we should encourage them to add verification.

@jerry @github Brands/Corporate/Commercial projects etc should be required to either host their own instance or pay for the instance that hosts them.
@jerry @github nice to see them commit to the fediverse
@SecureOwl @jerry @github I think they just initialized the repo — don’t see any commits yet
@jerry Okay, but how easy would it be for @github to host their own instance and verify?
@jerry @github I think this proves that this server is moving in the right direction! Welcome GitHub 🙌
@jerry @github so says you

@jerkey @jerry

As @batalanto would quite likely remind us :), the idea of the Fediverse is to *avoid* advertising for toxic organisations like Microsoft/Github - #GAFAM .

Unfortunately even @Gargron has not yet shifted his main Mastodon git repository off #GAFAM. But that's no reason for anyone to keep supporting authoritarianism, secrecy and #EEE (embrace, extend, extinguish) longer than needed.

Please shift to ethical git repositories like https://codeberg.org ! Thanks!

#codeberg

Codeberg.org

Codeberg is a non-profit community-led organization that aims to help free and open source projects prosper by giving them a safe and friendly home.

Codeberg.org
@boud @jerkey @jerry @batalanto @Gargron but it’s a chicken and egg problem. Sure you’d want to move to more ethical FOSS alternatives, but all the integrations and tools are only available for these proprietary suites. Since they’re not popular, tools aren’t built for these niche alternatives. No matter a person personal inclinations, you can’t really scale businesses by depending on these. #pragmatic
@Awkwiredtaste @boud @jerry @batalanto @Gargron surely there is a FOSS GitHub clone out there?
@jerkey @boud @jerry @batalanto @Gargron again, sure for personal projects, there are tons of choices (GitLab being the most popular), but with no added incentive ( but depending on the use case, more than a few small to significant drawbacks ) to use them. As a dev, one should be pouring all of one’s efforts into building a solution whatever use case , business or socially beneficial, not jumping hurdles due to poor choices

@Awkwiredtaste

Here we're on the Fediverse, what you call a "niche alternative". We're aiming at developing a community, not at selling people as raw material to advertisers.

Accepting the #TyrannyOfConvenience with a toxic organisation like Microsoft weakens our ecosystem.

Ethics in this context is not about jumping hurdles, it's about escaping from a gilded prison.

If you have software skills, consider contributing to #ForgeFed

https://forgefed.org

- it's *not* a gh clone.

@jerkey

ForgeFed

@boud @jerkey Well as much as I personally love FOSS, using it wherever and whenever I can, I can’t seem to trust it with business critical applications where reliability and high availability are key. Although we’ve come a long way , we’re just not there yet. And hence I for one, will continue to be a part of the #tyrannyofconvenience (I might even change my handle to that XD. Hella edgy phrase, thanks !)
@Awkwiredtaste @jerkey @boud Your trust issues are out of calibration. If you can’t trust FOSS, you most certainly can’t trust non-transparent non-FOSS options. #Github in particular is notorious for poor availability due to access restrictions. See ¶1—8 of this article: https://mastodon.social/@jerkey/109384554751878834
@boud @jerkey @Awkwiredtaste I will not report bugs if the bug tracker is on #Github because GH pushes an email verification hurdle every single login. I also will not contribute code to Github-based projects as supporting GH would make me part of the problem.
@Awkwiredtaste @jerkey @boud If you were to change your handle to #tyrannyofconvenience readers would think the opposite. They would think you’re aware of the problem and that surely you are trying to bring awareness. They would not know that you prioritize convenience above principles. All the personal tasks in our lives are being made easier. But at what cost?

@Awkwiredtaste @Gargron @[email protected] @jerkey @boud I didn’t know #Mastodon development was a /business/ that needed to scale up. Why is growth needed? I thought Mastodon was a community project. I don’t see a chicken/egg problem here. IIUC, many tools integrate with the #Gitlab s/w & there are many community run Gitlab instances that avoid the gitlab .com shit-show.
@boud @jerkey @Gargron @Awkwiredtaste Between #Gitlab, #Gitea, #SourceHut, what tool is the Mastodon project using that lacks integration & forces them to use #Github? Is the tool really indispensible, and if so what stops Mastodon from integrating that tool into the free world options?
@Awkwiredtaste @Gargron @jerkey @boud Decentralization-philosophy-compatible forges listed here: https://git.sdf.org/humanacollaborator/humanacollabora/src/branch/master/forge_comparison.md If it’s true that the #Mastodon project is trapped on GH, then at a minimum it should follow the advice of the Give Up Github movement & edit the readme: https://sfconservancy.org/docs/SupportGiveUpGitHub-README-snippet.md

@jerry I wish they would have signed up on brands.town instead
@jerry @github they should verify themselves with GitHub.com
@jerry @github Not that I don't want them here but huh, I'd think Microsoft would make enough to be able to run their own instance to ensure an even more different handle to impersonate.
@github @jerry This is the time where having an intuitive way to verify an official account or having the big companies run their own instance on their domain would come handy.
@jerry @github well, I was just trying to legitimately claim a github org back to my company, and my support ticket got rejected (long story), so if someone knows someone who knows someone 😉😉
@jerry Prepare to be told you're evil and that your instance should be blocked for allowing this.
@mansr yep - already there
@mansr @jerry welp. Happy Thanksgiving ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
