Let it be known the account @github has been claimed by the official organization GitHub
@jerry @github so says you

@jerkey @jerry

As @batalanto would quite likely remind us :), the idea of the Fediverse is to *avoid* advertising for toxic organisations like Microsoft/Github - #GAFAM .

Unfortunately even @Gargron has not yet shifted his main Mastodon git repository off #GAFAM. But that's no reason for anyone to keep supporting authoritarianism, secrecy and #EEE (embrace, extend, extinguish) longer than needed.

Please shift to ethical git repositories like https://codeberg.org ! Thanks!

Codeberg.org

Codeberg is a non-profit community-led organization that aims to help free and open source projects prosper by giving them a safe and friendly home.

@boud @jerkey @jerry @batalanto @Gargron but it’s a chicken and egg problem. Sure you’d want to move to more ethical FOSS alternatives, but all the integrations and tools are only available for these proprietary suites. Since they’re not popular, tools aren’t built for these niche alternatives. No matter a person personal inclinations, you can’t really scale businesses by depending on these. #pragmatic
@Awkwiredtaste @boud @jerry @batalanto @Gargron surely there is a FOSS GitHub clone out there?
@jerkey @boud @jerry @batalanto @Gargron again, sure for personal projects, there are tons of choices (GitLab being the most popular), but with no added incentive ( but depending on the use case, more than a few small to significant drawbacks ) to use them. As a dev, one should be pouring all of one’s efforts into building a solution whatever use case , business or socially beneficial, not jumping hurdles due to poor choices

@Awkwiredtaste

Here we're on the Fediverse, what you call a "niche alternative". We're aiming at developing a community, not at selling people as raw material to advertisers.

Accepting the #TyrannyOfConvenience with a toxic organisation like Microsoft weakens our ecosystem.

Ethics in this context is not about jumping hurdles, it's about escaping from a gilded prison.

If you have software skills, consider contributing to #ForgeFed

https://forgefed.org

- it's *not* a gh clone.

ForgeFed

@boud @jerkey Well as much as I personally love FOSS, using it wherever and whenever I can, I can’t seem to trust it with business critical applications where reliability and high availability are key. Although we’ve come a long way , we’re just not there yet. And hence I for one, will continue to be a part of the #tyrannyofconvenience (I might even change my handle to that XD. Hella edgy phrase, thanks !)
@Awkwiredtaste @jerkey @boud Your trust issues are out of calibration. If you can’t trust FOSS, you most certainly can’t trust non-transparent non-FOSS options. #Github in particular is notorious for poor availability due to access restrictions. See ¶1—8 of this article: https://mastodon.social/@jerkey/109384554751878834
@boud @jerkey @Awkwiredtaste I will not report bugs if the bug tracker is on #Github because GH pushes an email verification hurdle every single login. I also will not contribute code to Github-based projects as supporting GH would make me part of the problem.
@Awkwiredtaste @jerkey @boud If you were to change your handle to #tyrannyofconvenience readers would think the opposite. They would think you’re aware of the problem and that surely you are trying to bring awareness. They would not know that you prioritize convenience above principles.
