TIP OF THE DAY

Mastodon is not broken.

It's different, and much better. Mastodon by design promotes engagement not asserting influence. It's a dinner party, not a food fight. Most of what you might at first think is deficient is intentional. Before you rush to conclusions, try it for a while. Take part in this new community. Make new friends. Be kind. This is what social media should be. You will be amazed.

TIP OF THE DAY If your instance server is having a hard time right now, don't freak out. You do not need to change servers. Mastodon is getting a huge influx of new users and they are all working tirelessly to add capacity. If you are otherwise happy with your instance, trust that they will get things working smoothly. Give them some time to sort things out. We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing. #mastodonmigration #twittermigration

Mastodon

@mastodonmigration That’s Really useful - I’ve been wondering how I could ‘save’ hashtags. Gonna try that out and repost.

The other things that I am stuck on - 2 accounts that I originally followed have been suspended (no idea why - couldn’t see anything about them that was out the way) but I can’t see any way to now ‘unfollow’ them?

@mastodonmigration Also - I suspect that this might have something to do with lists - I’ve noticed that some things show up in the feed and it says the person mentioned me, e.g. I was included in the audience?, but there’s nothing I can see that says my name, etc.? I suspect they are picking say people interested in photography for a particular post, rather than everyone, but I’ve no idea? I might be talking a load of rubbish here mind… 🤣 Any idea about what I’m trying to say?
@mastodonmigration The follow hashtags part - if I search for a hashtag then press enter (on a browser) then click on the ‘person+’ as instructed, I wasn’t sure if this meant that any say #photography items then appeared in my feed? But if I clicked on settings, top right, then + for pin, I get a new column and that feeds that hashtag to me. Don’t know if that’s the ‘proper’ way to do it but works ok. ☺️
@mastodonmigration how send a big image on Mastodon?
@mastodonmigration TLDR: try being chill for 5 seconds and talk to people
@mastodonmigration searching for hashtag subjects on the mobile app, such as #photography returns no results, so that seems more broke than intended.
@ColTilley @mastodonmigration agree. Generally I love it, but search is proving very problematic.
@MsGolightly @ColTilley @mastodonmigration Search is only able to search posts and users that are either local to your server, or federated onto your server by virtue of being followed by you or someone else on your server. (Or boosted by someone external that is being followed). There is no global search. I think that is what is most jarring when coming from a centralised platform like Twitter
@deepfriedsteve @MsGolightly @ColTilley @mastodonmigration
I know this is from a month ago, but just in case anyone else comes across this issue- I've searched using a hashtag and gotten 0 results, BUT if you click on a hashtag (even if you have to first just toot: " #photography ") and then click on it...instant results!
@ColTilley @mastodonmigration I can search for hashtags. I'm on Tusky and have an android. You get a list, choose one and go direct to posts using that hashtag. Not sure if that helps! This app seems OK so far. Still not sure how to automatically follow a hashtag though!
@RebeccaFloPrim @mastodonmigration ta. A few have suggested other mastodon platforms such as tusky work fine and have better functionality. Must admit to being confused, I wanted to try mastodon, so get the mastodon app, right? Why would you use another platform to get into mastodon?
@ColTilley @RebeccaFloPrim @mastodonmigration tusky isn't another platform. It's another client for the same platform. Just like you have a choice of several different email apps that can all work with your email provider.
@RebeccaFloPrim @ColTilley If you are on v4 you can follow hashtags by clicking # Explore on the right, entering the hashtag in the search bar, clicking on the returned result below, then clicking the little guy icon with a + ...
@mastodonmigration @RebeccaFloPrim Is that the desktop/PC version on mastodon? My android mobile app does not appear to have that functionality unfortunately 😕

@mastodonmigration (Whispers) Using CamelCase in multi-word hashtags makes life much easier for folks using screen-readers.

E.g. CoOp gets pronounced "co op" rather than "coop".

#accessibility

@DewiIoan @sds @mastodonmigration Including screenreaders.

@likesohushhush @DewiIoan @mastodonmigration Ah, indeed - it's such a long time since I've written Perl, I'd completely forgotten that camelCase gets its name from the hump in the middle, and what I really meant was InterCapping!

(Or, of course, PascalCase - except I know if I mention Pascal, I'll set @jimlynn off).

@sds @likesohushhush @DewiIoan @mastodonmigration
Just as long as you don't start talking about Reverse Hungarian Notation I'll be fine.
@jimlynn @sds @likesohushhush @mastodonmigration
You're giving me flashbacks... I'm sure the screaming will stop soon
@mastodonmigration I am loving it, haven't seen a mean thing said - lots of trust following people randomly, wide variety of interests, some popular from bird site and others because they are active.
@mastodonmigration loving it but feeling a bit lost
@mastodonmigration I sincerely hope that I fit in.
Not doing very well on University Challenge tonight. 6 questions right😢
@mastodonmigration It has its issues though… like people being booted off on the basis of libellous claims by trolls that aren’t evidenced. Federation unfortunately appears to mean no accountability for moderation decisions.

@Regulator @mastodonmigration I don't think accountability was any better on larger social media sites. I don't know much about Twitter, but on Facebook you could get a ban for saying something like "punch a Nazi" but saying wildly prejudiced things was fine by them if it wasn't obvious from seeing the comment in isolation.

At least here you can move to a different server.

@Regulator It's very true that the most important thing about the server you join is the quality of the content moderation. Currently the people running the instances are overwhelmed. If you feel that you have been treated wrongfully, you should try to appeal, and if they do not respond, your other option is to go somewhere else.
Be understanding, the moderators are people and they have a very tough job. Here is a good article on what they are up against >>> https://rixx.de/blog/on-running-a-mastodon-instance/
On Running a Mastodon Instance

I've been running chaos.social for nearly 5 years. A reflection.

@mastodonmigration "...dinner party, not a food fight". #winning
@mastodonmigration I think I’m on the wrong server. There should be a server more geared for people interested in politics. How do I change my server & what is the name of the one for politics?

@RozAvanthay I don't know what server is for politics, maybe search some political hashtags and see what servers people are in.

If you're brand new you can probably just make a new account on the new server. There is no perfect way to move all your posts and followers but I think there's a tool to transfer one or the other?

@RozAvanthay ah yeah, looked at your profile just now, you probably want to make a new account and then @ all your followers to tell them it's you.
@legumancer ok. I’m going to have to take a breath before I start over 🤦🏼‍♀️

@RozAvanthay it's definitely a learning curve!

You might like newsie.social or mas.to. I saw those both pop up a few times in the politics hashtag.

@legumancer I don’t even know how I ended up with the server I’m on lol

@RozAvanthay maybe mstdn.party is a top Google result now?

You can sign up with newsie here: https://newsie.social/auth/sign_up you'll probably want to log out of here first to avoid conflicts

Newsie

Sign up on Mastodon today! With an account, you will be able to follow people, post updates and exchange messages with users from any Mastodon server and more!

Mastodon hosted on newsie.social
@legumancer okay I will try that. Tomorrow maybe hahaha. Thanks.
@RozAvanthay The server really doesn't matter as long as your server does not block the other servers you may be interested in. @mstdn.party seems like a fine server. >>>
https://fedidb.org/network/instance?domain=mstdn.party
It has ~20K users which is pretty big, but not too big and is running the most up to date version of Mastodon. Hopefully, they are doing a good technically and moderating content well. If so, you are all set.

@RozAvanthay In order to get more information on politics, try to do some searches like #politics or #USpolitics, and follow posters you find interesting. You can also follow these hashtags >>>
https://mastodon.online/@mastodonmigration/109326035598632042

Just hang out and enjoy. Follow liberally. Pretty soon you will have more politics than you can digest...

Mastodon Migration (@[email protected])

Attached: 1 image Reboosting for #NewUsers TIP OF THE DAY Use and Follow #hashtags !!! Mastodon has #NoAds, #500Chars, #5Pins, and #PostEdits, but the best thing is #NoAlgorithm. On the #BirdSite you are force-fed by an #algorithm. A mishmash of your history, likes, follows and whatever Twitter wants to cram into you. With #NoAlgorithm, you are in control. Your feeds are just who and what you follow, and you can follow #hashtags . Include #hashtags liberally so others can follow your ideas. #twittermigration

Mastodon

@mastodonmigration @RozAvanthay Also: When you find people you want to follow in #politics or wherever, take a note of what instances those people are on. It's a good way to find an instance that's a better fit for you.

(You probably already know this next bit.) Your Local timeline just shows posts from the same instance as you, so it really is worth finding an instance where you feel more at home.

But there's no rush! You'll find the right home for you eventually. 😊

@RozAvanthay @mastodonmigration
To migrate between Mastodon servers without losing followers:

1. Sign up on new server
2. NEW server: Go to Account -> Moving FROM another account
3. Enter old account's handle
4. OLD server: Go to Preferences -> Data Export
5. Download all the CSV settings you want to copy across
6. Go to Account -> Moving TO another account
7. Enter new account's handle and submit
8. On NEW server: Go to Preferences -> Import
9. Import the CSV files from step 5.

@RozAvanthay It really doesn't matter what server you are on. Try to do some hashtag searches like #politics and you will find what you are looking for.

#mastodonmigration #mastodontips

@mastodonmigration @RozAvanthay It does not really matter as far as being able to talk to anyone one wants to. However, I find it useful to have signed up for an instance that is comprised of people who primarily discuss topics I am interested in. Even if I am not following them, if I click "local" , most posts in the stream are of interest to me.
@mastodonmigration yeah I get that. But we want follow one another’s followers who we’d love to hear from@bc we are on some other weird server we didn’t know anything about selecting servers … you either want real people on here who are overwhelmed with your jargon or you want us who wh atf passionate, angry & scared bc of what we are seeing in the political realm promoted by Musk right now

@RozAvanthay Those are all good reasons. Just want people to understand that everyone CAN talk to people on other servers.

#twittermigration #mastodonmigration #mastodontips

@mastodonmigration What a great line!
"It's a dinner party, not a food fight."
@mastodonmigration
Not broken? Have you SEEN the "Toot" button lately? It says "Publish!"
@WillDHB @mastodonmigration My instance does Toot! on the rollover of the Publish button 🐘
@mastodonmigration I do get the impression that healthy, respectful debate is discouraged where the issue is of social/political interest. Perhaps a hashtag that denotes this would be helpful (eg. #healthydebatezone #respectfuldebate etc.)
@mastodonmigration
“A dinner party not a food fight”. Nice.
@mastodonmigration
I agree. I like the way it works but I am finding it extremely difficult to get any response/interaction.
@mastodonmigration I’m new from twitter. Only a few friends are here that I know of. I don’t feel engaged yet here. I’m more of a reactor than a creator. I like to reply to people’s posts and hope to make them smile. I’m not a fighter but I have opinions on certain subjects. There were a few heavy posters that amused me everyday. I liked trying to make them laugh. I don’t know everything but I learn something everyday. I guess that’s my #introduction #TwitterMigration
@mastodonmigration
Kann ich bestätigen. Darum bin ich gerne in Mastodonien mit all den tollen Leuten hier. Sorgen wir dafür, dass das so bleibt. 🙂👏🤗🙏👍
@mastodonmigration it’s still a bit of a food fight, just not so aggressive. There’s still a certain chaos here that people seem to like
