TIP OF THE DAY

Mastodon is not broken.

It's different, and much better. Mastodon by design promotes engagement not asserting influence. It's a dinner party, not a food fight. Most of what you might at first think is deficient is intentional. Before you rush to conclusions, try it for a while. Take part in this new community. Make new friends. Be kind. This is what social media should be. You will be amazed.

@mastodonmigration searching for hashtag subjects on the mobile app, such as #photography returns no results, so that seems more broke than intended.
@ColTilley @mastodonmigration agree. Generally I love it, but search is proving very problematic.
@MsGolightly @ColTilley @mastodonmigration Search is only able to search posts and users that are either local to your server, or federated onto your server by virtue of being followed by you or someone else on your server. (Or boosted by someone external that is being followed). There is no global search. I think that is what is most jarring when coming from a centralised platform like Twitter

I know this is from a month ago, but just in case anyone else comes across this issue- I've searched using a hashtag and gotten 0 results, BUT if you click on a hashtag (even if you have to first just toot: " #photography ") and then click on it...instant results!
@ColTilley @mastodonmigration I can search for hashtags. I'm on Tusky and have an android. You get a list, choose one and go direct to posts using that hashtag. Not sure if that helps! This app seems OK so far. Still not sure how to automatically follow a hashtag though!
@RebeccaFloPrim @mastodonmigration ta. A few have suggested other mastodon platforms such as tusky work fine and have better functionality. Must admit to being confused, I wanted to try mastodon, so get the mastodon app, right? Why would you use another platform to get into mastodon?
@ColTilley @RebeccaFloPrim @mastodonmigration tusky isn't another platform. It's another client for the same platform. Just like you have a choice of several different email apps that can all work with your email provider.
@RebeccaFloPrim @ColTilley If you are on v4 you can follow hashtags by clicking # Explore on the right, entering the hashtag in the search bar, clicking on the returned result below, then clicking the little guy icon with a + ...
@mastodonmigration @RebeccaFloPrim Is that the desktop/PC version on mastodon? My android mobile app does not appear to have that functionality unfortunately πŸ˜•
