I wrote a piece for the New York Times about how scientists used Twitter during the Covid pandemic and about what comes next.

@ct_bergstrom Friends: read this. (Link above.)
@ct_bergstrom I found a way around the paywall that works using Firefox browser.
1. When paywall comes up, click on Toggle Reader View in address bar of browser.
2.This brings up new page with Headline and a couple of links.
3.Click on link to "Today's Paper," which brings up today's paper in Reader View.
4. Click Back arrow on browser, which takes you to the article you are trying to read (in Reader View).
I don't know why this works, and it may stop working soon.
@ct_bergstrom Great article and I hope scientists land here or another platform that encourages open discussions & minimizes harassment. Just let those of us who read just about everything scientists posted know where you land. I’m so grateful for the info I got about COVID19 on Twitter as it (so many contributors) helped me stay healthy & safe. Thank you for all that you contributed to our understanding & knowledge of this novel virus & more.

Great discussion of how academic Twitter and Mastodon may coexist. I research social media and online communities using ecological concepts and models and I strongly agree that Twitter is likely to survive, but in an altered form, and think even a partial migration of academic Twitter to mastodon could be positive for the broader academic community. It's encouraging that our intuitions align. Ecological dynamics between the mastodon and twitter communities will be fascinating.
@ct_bergstrom. Thank you for this excellent essay. I found #COVID threads by @WesElyMD especially valuable. Through the bird app, I also "met him," which was a thrill. Because of my interest in #medhum, #narrativemedicine, and #dementia, especially #Alzheimers, I'm trying to reconnect with some of the #doctors, #caregivers, and people with #dementia whom I was following. And of course, am finding new people to follow.
@ct_bergstrom Such clarity of exposition. Thanks for writing this piece. I take home above all what happened when the general public, and more particularly, the think tanks with an agenda, had access to the steps that go into eventually releasing a complete paper with fairly well-supported conclusions.

Excellent article.

It was the generosity of scientists on Twitter that was so immense - you amongst them. Every day I learnt something new. Often many many things.

It was painful watching the conversations grow darker, meaner.

I can’t see that improving under Melon Husk.

@ct_bergstrom thank you for gifting this article Carl 😷
