Here, have another Beethoven Appassionata performance. Valentina Lisitsa.

Poor Alfred Brendel, at the back of the pack. (Glenn Gould still hasn't finished playing the second movement.)

"Intermediate levels of scientific knowledge are associated with overconfidence and negative attitudes towards science", Lackner et al. 2023 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-023-01677-8

The Institute for Replication (#I4R) is collaborating with the publisher (Nature Human Behaviour) and has now produced a report on the above paper (https://osf.io/mg95t/files/mjs86 ) which is largely positive:

"LFMMG (2023) presents a computationally reproducible and largely robust finding. We re-implemented the full analytical pipeline and conducted thirty-one robustness checks with those results summarized in Table 8. There is much kudos to be given to the original authours* for making the process of replicating their work clear and worthwhile."

* typo in the original text of the report.

Intermediate levels of scientific knowledge are associated with overconfidence and negative attitudes towards science - Nature Human Behaviour

Lackner et al. show that individuals with an intermediate level of science knowledge tend to have overconfidence in their own knowledge and negative attitudes to science.

Now, more than ever, I find myself contemplating the last two sentences from this page of Acton's "Numerical Methods that (usually) Work".

Today someone (who is not on Mastodon) released a collection of more than 570 distinct operating systems, pre-installed with VM configurations for the 250+ different platforms, going back all the way to 1948.

https://virtualosmuseum.org/

Now, I have to admit I'm posting this without trying it myself, as I'm running low on disk space on this machine.

Because the full download is 121GB (174GB unzipped!). There is also a lighter version at 14GB that will download stuff on demand.

Behold the neuron, a complicated cell with a simple mission

Neurons, the uber-connected nerve cells that act as a main switchboard for the brain, are central to some incredibly complicated processes. They make it possible to think, walk, speak, and breathe. They even have built-in backup batteries to use in emergencies.

Can anyone help me find my AirTag attached keys? The FindMy app shows me their general location, which is a large public building where I last had them. When I go on site, my app is mostly unable to see them at all. Occasionally my app seems to be able to see a very weak signal but I can't seem to zero in on it. This is driving me nuts. I've looking now for two weeks. Anybody got tips?
