Mastodon has changed how I think. Twitter now seems like a server that doesn't want to federate with anyone else, and that everyone else has blacklisted. I'm in awe of how much sense that makes.
@laurakm in fact, that is exactly what Truth social is: it’s based on Mastodon (though heavily modified). But it’s pretty universally blocked.
@smitty @laurakm Yes there's nothing to stop someone setting up a Mastodon server with Truth social type content, or even say Musk deciding to try his luck with the Musk Mega Mast and migrating everyone on Twitter 😂. But what protects the FeDiverse is that the other servers can, and in nearly all cases would, block it.
@smitty That makes sense, I heardle about that site before I knew about Mastodon. Now the situation is much clearer!
@smitty @laurakm People who want to find it know where it is. Nobody needs a GOOGLE search to find it. Geeze!
@laurakm the federation makes logging in take one more step, but otherwise I barely notice.
@laurakm @jbbeal Jeff, if you bookmark https://awscommunity.social, it should be a one step login for you!
AWSCommunity.social

AWS (Amazon Web Services) Community-Focused Mastodon Server bringing together a global user group. Not affiliated with Amazon, but interested in AWS Technology.

Mastodon hosted on awscommunity.social
@jbbeal @laurakm because of 2factor? Because 2factor is good.
@meowlygrowly @laurakm I was referring more to needing to type the name of the server when logging in on mobile apps.
@jbbeal yeah then def a bookmark or desktop shortcut should do it :)
@meowlygrowly Handled on my browser, and literally just a one-time thing when I set up a mobile app. (And I'm trying out multiple mobile apps, so I've had to do it a few times)
@laurakm Whoah, that is a great perspective. Kinda trippy - like this is the new normal, and the other thing was weird.
@Suzyanalyst1 Mastodon just seems bigger and more sensible than Twitter. It's like we were all stuck on some company's email server, and now we're free to choose our own better provider. Mastodon just makes sense in a way that Twitter never did.
@laurakm Yes I totally see that now.
@laurakm @Suzyanalyst1 for old timers this is similar to how FidoNet ran back in the early 90s, in the BBS days.

@laurakm Just wait until you learn how #OpenBSD's #spamd #greylister contends with e.g. gmail.

You may gain perspective that MUCH (Most? All?) of the so-called surveillance capitalist driven "commercial" internet, is actually:

Dastardly

Vile.

Time Bandits levels of "IT'S EVIL! DON'T TOUCH IT!"

Thankfully, the internet was not founded on such principals, & exists despite the bad actors.

But at what cost?

Be careful, I refer you to #雲に糸「kumo no ito」(The Spider's Thread) for further reading.

@laurakm That is an amazing way of thinking of Twitter. Wow
@laurakm Another way to think about this: protocols, not platforms.
@laurakm Interesting. How has it changed how you think/post? I'm also noticing differences in algorithms but not sure how to....gain clout? Or build friends in this new environment.
@ATW @laurakm just scroll through the different timelines and follow people who you think are interesting or have the same interests as you do.
@laurakm And the admin is a narcissistic chaos goblin.
@laurakm the crazy thing is that networks like Twitter (or, really, any corporate server) really just makes money by trying to keep people exlusively on their instance for as long as possible with no way for those people to dial out.
@sean That's exactly it. The perspective shift with moving to Mastodon makes you realise how hard Twitter fought to keep you engaged, which wasn't in your best interests. Mastodon feels so different in such a hugely positive way!
@laurakm Or someone's racist uncle who drives around in a Jag and double parks to randomly tell people shit stories. He used to be funny and down to earth back in the day, but he started hanging with this weird nazi dude and now he's a douche.

@laurakm A 5 years mastodon user, I used to think this way about … twitter users not wanting to federate and piling up their content on a fragile/closed platform :)

Yup, there was a bit of resentment.

Thanks to posts like yours, I now anderstand twittas just couldn't get the concept of federation.

@ffeth That's it exactly! I didn't even know that federation was a thing, I didn't know I needed it. Another person made the analogy of Neo in The Matrix, it feels like I've been "unplugged" from Twitter and I'm learning how the real world works.
@laurakm @ffeth similar experience for me, am really enjoying the less dopamine driven experience.
@laurakm true. Mastodon federation is an exciting idea for geeks like me and, I assume, you. Not sure if common users will perceive it more like a complication or a benefit.
@folini @laurakm it is a harder initial barrier but once you do it it’s quite straight forward. Yesteday I found out you can redirect your account between different servers and you can also migrate. I love it!
@yossi @folini @laurakm how do you migrate to another server or redirect (what's redirecting?)

@edlin @folini @laurakm

follow the links at the bottom of your profile settings

@laurakm the way mastodon works makes so much sense. Twitter is like the old AOL Mail that could only be used between aol members! Mastodon is the future.
@laurakm initial thoughts on Mastodon is its Discord version of microblogging
@laurakm I’ve been slow to come around to this way of thinking, but I’m beginning to get it also.
@laurakm It's occurred to me too, and I'm both in awe and frustrated that others can't see it 😂
@laurakm I'm already feeling lighter than air after having migrated.
@laurakm Right? like all the users are trapped and can't leave, and must suffer endlessly, eyeballs glued to the doomscroller!

@laurakm And users are digitally captive on Twitter server not being allowed to easily port to another.

Some users even arguing that they are proud to stay there. Like it's a case of Stockholm syndrome towards their new autocratic leader.

@laurakm and the admin turns out to be a dickhead and noone trusts him any more

@laurakm I am really happy you had this switch of perspective and hope more people will feel similarly after migrating.

Because once the concept of federation is more firmly established in people's minds it may subsequently be easier to accomplish a similar critical mass migration for instant messaging, over to things like matrix or xmpp instead of the current 'which closed messenger do they have' whackamole.

@laurakm Just out of pure and genuine curiosity, if Twitter were to federate, would you allow it or block it?
@laurakm yes! As I close in on my first day exploring the #fediverse, I’m coming to the same realisation and undergoing the same paradigm shift. Thank you for putting into words what’s been rumbling in my head for the last few hours
@laurakm ya leave twitter to trump he can twit to himself
@laurakm I'm still learning how to use it.
@laurakm totally agree. It changes everything. One of those 'of course that's how it's supposed to work' moments. Then a slight feeling of embarrassment that I was so slow to catch on.
@laurakm Newsflash! Twitter has always been that way. However, Now that it is out of the hands of left-leaning liberals, (since been cast out of Twitter by Elon) many suddenly have figured out that it's an unfederated, blacklist site. Go figure!
@ChrisS1563 @laurakm Chris, I'm not convinced Twitter was ever in the hands of "left leaning liberals" as opposed to just not being controlled by right-wing extremists like Musk and Trump. That said, I can certainly see how it might appear to be the case depending on one's political viewpoint.

@Westdragon @laurakm is this proof enough? Courtesy of Elon Musk himself!

Found a closet full of this in the cellars of Twitter.

@ChrisS1563 @laurakm LOL, I'm a moderate and would wear one of those just to piss off right wingers. Doesn't prove anything but then we both know this is going nowhere so I'll bow out of conversation with you.
@laurakm I also like how mastodonians started refer to twitter users in fediverse format
@laurakm That’s literally how Truth Social started.
