What if the universe is set up just like the Fediverse, but we don’t know about the existence of any other life because our Earth instance was preemptively blocked for hateful conduct.

Why? 
Mastodon is a bunch of islands that can talk to each other. The smaller and more spread out we are, the easier things are to moderate. Horizontal scaling FTW!
All of you who fled that one site 🐤 ended up at mastodon.social for likely a few reasons. It was obvious, it was big, and it's where you saw a bunch of folks going.
But it has a long history of being poorly moderated, which means a LOT of instances are silencing or blocking it. Which means you're on the big island that SEEMS like it's "where everyone is", but in fact, it's a giant island unto itself (momentarily trending toward turning into a post-bird-site echo chamber), and huge swaths of the Fediverse don't talk to it, or even see it.
If you want the quality of interaction (and moderation!) Mastodon is known for, move thy funky buns to a smaller instance of cool folks you enjoy.

I’m new on The #Fediverse, but not a #Twitter transplant. And I find myself #torn between being #sympathetic to the new #migrants from Twitter and being thoroughly #annoyed with the #toxic behaviors many bring with them…the whole reason I never did Twitter to begin with.
Hopefully they’ll calm down over time and look inward at the mental #trauma from years of #algorithmic #psychological manipulation and abuse. It like unplugging from the #matrix and learning to see with your own eyes.

Laura Kate 🏳️⚧️Mastodon has changed how I think. Twitter now seems like a server that doesn't want to federate with anyone else, and that everyone else has blacklisted. I'm in awe of how much sense that makes.
Grumpy PhilosopherOk, Mastodon is officially a lot more awesome than I had realised. There's a federated server for everyone who's really into bitcoin, and, yes, it is full of people who are as awful as you can imagine. But, with one click, you can block the entire domain! 12.8k thousand crypto weirdos filtered out in a click. Amazing.
