Alabama Schools Cancel Black History Month Event With Award-Winning Author

Award-winning children's book author Derrick Barnes was scheduled to visit three schools in Alabama during Black History Month. But just before Barnes' planned appearances in February, the invitation to Hoover and Alabaster City Schools was abruptly canceled.

When I was in 7th grade, all of my friends started shaving their legs and I wanted to do the same, but my mom discouraged it, pretty much saying that I didn’t have a lot of leg hair and it was blonde so you couldn’t even see it and, aside from the potential of cutting myself, once I started shaving my legs, I’d then have to continue doing it.

A little while later, some promo samples came in the mail and one of the items was a BIC razor so I “stole” it and kept it on hand until I had the perfect window of time to try shaving my legs.

I remember sitting on the edge of the bathtub and carefully laying out a towel along with the razor and a can of shaving cream I took from my dad’s bathroom.

I carefully began shaving my legs and I was SO excited to find how easy it was and I was super proud of how I didn’t even cut myself.

When I was done, I rinsed off the excess shaving cream and dried my legs, but I quickly noticed my legs were still covered in just as many little hairs as when I had started.

Confused, I took a look at the razor to see what was wrong, and that’s when I realized I had never taken off the plastic blade guard.

I didn’t try again for another year because I realized I was way too dumb to be trusted with any sort of razor blade.

It was cloudy all day when I took this shot of the moonrise over the Cascades in #WashingtonState one afternoon, luckily I spotted some clearing just in time to be able to take a peek before the moon disappeared behind those dark clouds. I was thrilled to get a glimpse and it was used in my local news. Handheld shot…

In yet more distressing prototype discoveries, my binder rings are too small for this pattern. They worked absolutely flawlessly for the pattern, but once I add a canvas - or worse (thicker), leather - cover over the fiberboard core, the cover gets a little wider.

I need about 3 more mm inner diameter for the separate covers not to collide upon opening.

It's gonna be so DINGDANG CUTE, THOUGH!
🥰🥰🥰  I'll try cheating one now by punching the holes a little closer to the edge.

I'm watching black history month shows and it made me realize I never heard the words "trauma" and "slavery" together before 10-15 years ago. US History courses glossed over it, even in college.

Once you hear it, the entire history of the American black experience makes sense. Slavery was unspeakably horrific and a segment of the population didn't just survive it, but daily effects continue 100s of years later in every aspect of life.

This is why they attack African American studies programs.

When you wake you up to find that not only was your ex two weeks late with child support this month (he warned me, so that was expected), but he also shorted you $200 with no prior warning. We’ll make it, but it’s going to be super tight for the next few weeks. SMDH.
I have been surrounded by gays, trans, and drag queens my whole adult life. Not once have I ever had to fear violence or harm from any of them, or had to have special training in case one came into my workplace. Meanwhile, I have been bullied and threatened by people who called themselves “Christians”, harassed by cops, and had to attend special training in case someone shows up at the office with an AR-15.

Men: Every man who’s nice to you isn’t trying to fuck you.

Women: Ok now replace “man” with “woman,” read that back to yourselves, and act accordingly.
