I think for me to abandon Twitter entirely, I'd need more official media orgs (e..g Sky, BBC, CNN) on here, more journalists because I get a lot of my news from Twitter (esp breaking news).

Also more official bodies (e.g. UKHSA, ONS) so I can see when new official research & stats are released on e.g. Covid, the economy, etc.

And finally academic journals (e.g. BMJ, Lancet, NEJM) who I rely on for latest health research!

Will they come?

@chrischirp many are already here
@graeme_0 I don't suppose anyone has a handy list? 😬
@chrischirp @graeme_0 I used this earlier to look for those who have a mastodon account somewhere on their bird app bio : https://fedifinder.glitch.me/ worked like a charm for me

True, very handy tool. It's probably a good idea to repeat it every once in a while.
@yuroon @chrischirp @graeme_0 def, especially if the migration continues at this rate

@chrischirp @graeme_0

I saw a very long journa spreadsheet earlier

Now, can I find it, that's the question

@chrischirp @graeme_0 There was a list on this post https://indieweb.social/@tchambers/109309544832970649 - apologies, I haven’t figured out how to link posts across yet so I hope this works …

This list of #journalists on Mastodon has absolutely taken on a life of its own. šŸ”„ It's now grown to over 540 journalists and shows no signs of stopping. @chrischirp they may show up but, for now, unlike the Bird site, there's no way to disseminate information directly. Additionally, automation services (Hootsuite, Buffer, Sprout, et al) aren't designed for Mastodon's disaggregation so...it'll be a hot minute.
@davegraham is it so difference to have a BBC news handle on a mastodon instance vs a twtitter account? or ditto for @ONS or @UKHSA?
@chrischirp not really but most of these institutions rely on 3rd party software to increase their reach and, until the tooling for that software touches Mastodon, it's not going to be done. It's both laziness AND efficiency coupled together.
@chrischirp and never forget, insofar as we believe these entities to be for our benefit, they aren't. They have to figure out their monetization model. Which doesn't exist here in the fediverse (outside of bespoke instances)
@davegraham @chrischirp laziness and efficiency are the same thing in my book.
@edjuardo @chrischirp lol. they can be but...sometimes discovering efficiencies takes a lot of work ;)
@chrischirp I expect so. I think quite quickly they'll start running their own instances, because they don't like being left out.
@ejoftheweb @chrischirp would I be right in thinking that i.e. BBC running their own server would in effect be a sort of verification? In that if you have an @{handle}@{subdomain}.bbc.co.uk and that server only allows staff accounts, the BBC would have ownership of that content?
@chrischirp @debenore @ejoftheweb yes and apparently bbc people have been suggesting it internally…
@debenore @mathcampbell @ejoftheweb @chrischirp Definitely the way they should be thinking. Makes total sense.
@chrischirp
At the end of the day, I think they'll go where the people are, so here's hoping the fediverse gains more and more people and they come.
@chrischirp Yes, I have a number of trusted news sources, mostly specific journalists, that I follow in a Tweetdeck list. Haven't seen many of them in here yet.

@chrischirp I think we'll see a steady trickling in over the next couple months. News agencies don't move that quickly, and until just recently Mastodon was tiny. I'm already seeing individual journalists that I recognized coming over, but I expect official agencies will take longer.

There's also BTW bots that mirror Twitter content. I've not tried setting one up, but I imagine you could set one up for any account.

@nafnlaus @chrischirp EU and German government both have presences, I expect other countries to follow suit
@nafnlaus @chrischirp Let’s hope they understand that participation is a chance and cross posting is an option.
@chrischirp @nafnlaus I have seen two newspapers and a dozen journalists setting up on mastodon.Scot in 2 days and we’re quite a small instance. It’s going to happen if only individuals.
@chrischirp my feeling too; fwiw, I can envisage twitter turning into something of a newsfeed, with more personal interactions here on mastodon...
@chrischirp i have already suggested to our comms team (part of uk govt) to set up a feeds.gov.uk or similar and thus have verified accounts

@kincaid @chrischirp

@danhon has some good arguments to take this approach here (along with a few cautions):

@kincaid @chrischirp I'm guessing you've seen that the German govt has already set up an instance?

So the German government has set up its own #mastodon #instance, simplifying validation—official accounts are on the server. Super interesting and curious if/who else will follow suit. https://social.bund.de/explore

@chrischirp yes they will come. Twitter is finished
@chrischirp I'd bet on it, yes! have you seen the BBC retweet bot in the meantime?
@chrischirp I think the official bodies/media won't come until the network of connected individuals reaches a critical mass. Seems key to attempt to reassemble follower/followed panels as folks establish themselves and then to cross-post.
@chrischirp @cnewtoncheh they’re already moving across. As are politicos like me.

@chrischirp I bet someone could make a bot that just retoots what ever specific news org tweets.
@chrischirp Seems like only a matter of time to me given how rapidly things are changing between the two platforms.
@chrischirp same, a few of my favourites are holding out on there, so I’ll definitely hang on for a while, and as you say breaking news is essential. I’m happy here, but e servers are struggling a bit I think , so I’m getting some issues with immediacy atm. It’s early days though

@chrischirp

I see some USA journals are on ere (eg NYT and CNN …and expect that to increase as they realise 1/ the audience is getting so much larger and 2/ there are specialised subgroups, including scientists. Perhaps worth flagging this up to the UKHSA and the scientific journals?

@Fascinatorfun @chrischirp You may also be able to follow twitter handles via mirrors such as beta.birdsite.live see eg @bbcnews though it may not be perfectly reliable...
@chrischirp I agree entirely. I enjoy the social content but the factual information and experts are the parts I rely on the most. If they come I'd leave Twitter in a heartbeat.
@chrischirp As a health/pharmacy journalist, I’ve had these thoughts too. I’d need the health charities, news and organisations on here, just as you said. Most of my news comes through Twitter these days, as the official accounts are updated more quickly (and frequently) than their website news feeds. This feels more chatty and sociable at the moment but not a ā€˜work place’.

@chrischirp Yeah, I feel like I won't fully leave Twitter for a while.

I probably won't post there much anymore, but I still gotta go there for my news.

@chrischirp I could see some of the media orgs adding the fediverse as another medium they broadcast too. I don't see them having a two way engagement with the platforms for a while though.
@chrischirp That's a huge question for me as well. I've been using https://birdsite.wilde.cloud/ to bridge some key media accounts across but its not quite realtime
List of BirdsiteLIVE Instances

List of BirdsiteLIVE Instances

@chrischirp i've seen quite a lot of journalists from my follow list, though no official company presences.

@chrischirp Yes! I feel the same way. I've been asking the media and org entities I most enjoy to make themselves an account on Mastodon. I really do hope they start showing up.

One thing I'm gonna start doing is posting their content here. If we post it, perhaps they will come.

@chrischirp

I don’t think it will happen quickly (unless twitter actually fails, which is unlikely quickly, if at all). Of course some will come, but the bulk will come when they are either ā€œmissing outā€ or being ā€œignored" by those who they care about.

Some of us can come ā€œall inā€, here, now, but some can’t, and that’s ok. The question for those of you who need to keep a foot in both camps, is "which camp will be more comfortable for the bulk for your time?"

@bnlawrence On twitter falling: apparently Musk had to borrow $13bn of the $44bn he paid for it, which means he will need to service $1bn per year in debt. That exceeds Twitter's annual revenue. So a crash is actually not all that unlikely.
@mike Yes, I read that, but as others have argued, the banks themselves might choose to take over rather than loose that sort of money …
@bnlawrence I don't really know what the banks taking over would mean in this situation. Do you mean foreclosing the loan?
