Formerly Anna Coles on Twitter. It’s me who has T1D, not the cat.
I’m an oldie, a ‘survivor’, who seasons cynicism, and despair at how the U.K. has been trashed by the Tories, with my own brand of hope.
Anybody who’s kind, anybody who seeks a better future for us and our descendants, anybody who makes us laugh, is my kind of person.

The German Weather Service reports only slightly warmer (+0.1 K) temperature in Germany than the long-term April mean for 1961-1990.

We had what used to be a rather typical German April. Yet, for many, April 2023 felt like a relatively cool month.

"This shows that we are now used to climate change in terms of temperatures" - a somber observation by the Deutscher Wetterdienst.

Yesterday I had never heard of Republic. Today I’ve joined & signed their petition. https://www.republic.org.uk/
Republic

We want to see the monarchy abolished and the King replaced with an elected, democratic head of state. In place of the King we want someone chosen by the people, not running the government but representing the nation independently of our politicians. An elected, effective head of state. The monarchy is wrong in principle, it's bad for British politics and it falls well short of the standards we should expect of public institutions.

Republic

Excellent piece by A level student Elsie McDowell
“Our education and health systems are in crisis, yet the government is funding a state-subsidised party. … it really is difficult to see how any monarch would be able to unify such a divided country today. … This country needs so much more than a bank holiday.”

What do young people want on coronation day? More teachers, climate action: start with that

King Charles III will be crowned in a taxpayer-funded extravaganza. None of it addresses the challenges in the real world, says Elsie McDowell, an A-level student and the 2023 winner of the Hugo Young award, 16-18 age category

🇬🇧The political repression against protestors in London yesterday is interesting because it shows us that currently:
🚷normality must be enforced by violence.🚷

A strong confident society doesn't need to lock people up when they say they don't agree with some public event; it just ignores them.

Silence is the most utterly destructive way to handle opposition.

So what I'm left with is an impression of:
🚓the vicious fragility of British public life.🚓

Yesterday was the hottest day ever recorded in Bangkok, Thailand, city of 11 million: 40.5⁰C (105F)!

This is excellent from Polly Toynbee on the ludicrous pageant yesterday.

Protesters in handcuffs and nonstop bling: this coronation has been an embarrassment

Other European royals would never have risked a display on this scale. From his much-mocked pledge of allegiance onwards, Charles’s gamble has gone terribly wrong

The Guardian
At that moment a small boy cried out from the crowd " The king hasn't got any clothes on" and he, and his family were immediately arrested by Met Police, and they were sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Please stop confusing the UK with an actual functioning democracy.
