I'm a #Grandfather, #gamer, #activist, former #tree-hugger, #writer/author of mostly #sci-fi/fantasy, #artist, #musician, and somewhat #left-wing. Fan of #science, #FountainPens, #genealogy, most #music (esp classical) and #CriticalThinking and #sparkly things. #Ottawa. Looking for serious and/or silly conversation.

Is there a #phobia for Fear of Missing Something Sparkly? I've joined several 'general' instances, followed some people on each, and enjoy their toots as well as the rich and varied Locals. But then I have to keep checking each one. I could pick one and migrate everything over, but will miss the content on the other ones. Maybe this is more #COVID-stress induced indecisiveness. I mean, a month ago I didn't even know any of this Mastodon stuff existed!
I appreciate that my Local feed in here is not filled with obscure replies and one-liners - I think because people know to use Unlisted. Not so much in other newer instances - maybe because people are new and don't know about it. Or maybe they have a sense of self-importance pumped up by other platforms they were on. Comments?

UPDATE: If you want to transfer your account to another server, here's how to do it:

This guide is a bit longer than other guides as it includes moving your followers, follows and blocks/mutes/bookmarks.

(By the way, sorry for people seeing notification of this post edit. I had to edit as the original contents were somewhat out of date. As this post now links to my website instead, you won't get any future update notices for this post.)

It is harder than you would think not to repeat all the mistakes your parents made while also trying not to make new ones.

Yes, mask-wearing is a choice.

It is a choice to care about your community. It's a choice to count your neighbor's life and livelihood as more important than a minor inconvenience.

"People who need to wear masks will" -- well, for others to be out in public safely, you need to wear a mask. Public health is not something that can be dealt with on an individual basis.

I read an interesting article from The #Guardian on #Manga. So now I know more about it. https://www.theguardian.com/books/manga

Anybody else thinking this place feels like a school reunion. All the people who were sort of still there on twitter but you were missing them amongst the crowds (thanks to algorithms)
#Mstdn.ca - found this instance. I am Canadian, but I don't want a too partisan site so I'll browse the local for a while to see if it has a nice mix for alternate server.

Are you tagged in a thread that you don't want to take part in any more?

You can mute just the conversation itself, no one will know you've done this:

-Log in through website or a third party app, go to one of your posts in the thread, click on ⋯ and "Mute conversation".

-If you haven't posted in the thread, go to a post where you were tagged, then ⋯ and "Mute conversation".

-If you change your mind, do same thing but select "Unmute conversation".

The official app doesn't have this yet.
