WIRED just published my beginner's guide to Mastodon! Thank you to the 100+ people who responded to my request for tips and advice for understanding the culture here. https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-get-started-use-mastodon/
@jhpot Nicely done! It’s more like hanging out at a pub over beers than it is walking around a shopping mall trying to have a conversation.
@segdeha That is a great way of putting it! Except the beer is free as in freedom (attempt at open source joke)
@jhpot @segdeha But unlike Linux, I don't want a Red Hat build here please ;)
@3fecta Not sure I know enough about Linux to get this. Is that because Red Hat was the commercialized version?
@segdeha Yeah it was my bad attempt at a dad joke. Red hat Linux fine, red hat MAGA not.
@3fecta ahhhh, got it. more levels to it than i thought 😂
@jhpot @segdeha Is this... A reference to ye old Free Beer?! Oh my gray hairs!
@jhpot thank you! I’ll will for sure be reading that! I need help!
@jhpot Ty for this. Still can't get the self-verify link to work tho
@securityskeptic It's a little tricky and it takes a while sometimes!
@jhpot thanks. Is there some final action in my profile after I have the link on my web site. #threewayhandshake
@jhpot thank you, this will help greatly.

@jhpot
I'd like to be the first to tell you in detail about everything you got wrong in this article.

🧵 (1/87)

@mykd lol bring it on i deserve it
@jhpot
😉 Not at all.
I'm still reading through it, but I think it's a great introduction, and I'm bookmarking it in case any friends or family ask me what this thing's all about.
@mykd That is precisely the kind of guide I wanted to write! Something that gets across what makes this difference but in a way that just about anyone would be able to follow.
@jhpot
Finished reading now. You've done a great job, and on just skimming the replies here it's clear that there's a real appetite for this. Thanks for the work you've put in.
@mykd Thank you! It seems to be resonating and I'm really glad.

@mykd @jhpot

Okay, but I was so invested. My first mastodrama! 😜😂😂😂

@mykd @jhpot

This literally made me LOL

Well played, good sir. 😄

@jhpot one thing I didn't see there, that I would suggest because you talk about being able to follow people, is NOT setting an account to approve followers. I can't even imagine the amount of extra work it takes someone like you to sift through them all, but it also prevents your posts showing up in a feed until you approve the follow - yet your posts are still visible (if publicly posted) when one visits your profile page.
Great read, thanks for putting that together!

#Mastodon #tips

@JustAnotherJay Man I wish I could include everything in one guide but that would quickly become a book. I hope I can do various follow-up articles with tips like this.
@jhpot it's a beast for sure! On that note, just curious why you'd want to set your account to approve followers? I can see it if you wanted to post only to your followers only more often than not, but for post discovery and general post reach, it seems inhibiting.
@JustAnotherJay Some people aren't looking for reach! They want to keep the conversation to their own circle. This is particularly true of people who have been followed by trolls or generally obnoxious people on other platforms (which, as a journalist, I can tell you really sucks.)
@jhpot which I understand re: trolls. I guess what I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around is someone can still visit said follower's page and hop in on the conversation on any post that is public/unlisted (just not followers only) - it's just an extra step for them as opposed to having it show up in a feed. Wouldn't it be less work to block said users instead of having to approve all the "decent" ones?
@jhpot and I know it's minor in the grand scheme of things but I like to add people to lists when I follow them, if I have to wait for approval, I don't see anywhere that I get a notification of said approval so I can go back and add them later. Maybe that functionality will come in due time...

@jhpot Nice article :) I will definitely share this with my friends when they ask about #Mastodon

"For example, if I were sharing a nude picture of myself I could write the content warning “nude pasty white dude.” Anyone who wants to see me, for some reason, can click to do so, but everyone else is spared." 😂 This was fun.

@kam08 I'm glad you found that funny! I always try to lighten the mood. I sincerely hope the piece is useful for people.
@jhpot I'm sure it is. I ended up here because someone wrote a piece a couple of days ago on Le Monde (French newspaper). I'm confident that with the traction Wired has, your article will be helpful to a lot of people. 😀
@jhpot just wanted to let you know I enjoyed reading this article. I hope it will reach a wide audience including people who may not have realized that Mastodon is something different and wouldn’t have otherwise tried it.
@jhpot Terrific article! Very helpful for a newbie like me - getting used to the culture here is interesting, but pleasant.
@jhpot this was by far the most well written introductory guide to Mastodon that I've read!
@manika I'm so glad it's resonating! It was a lot of work.
@jhpot that’s pretty amazing. Congrats!

@jhpot

How timely for a Mastodon newbie like myself to see this as the first post! Will be my morning read 📖

@jhpot I took a brief look and it opened my eyes to a lot l wasn't aware of. Great work! I am a senior and newbie to Mastodon.
@jhpot
Thank you for your contribution.
Some months ago, I was interviewed on the Fediverse. If you are interested, here is the source: https://www.assodpo.it/2022/07/21/The-Fediverse-what-is-it-and-how-does-it-work/
The Fediverse: what is it and how does it work?

For some months now we hear more and more often people talking and writing about the fediverse. Indeed, someone could think that the fediverse is the same as the metaverse and be confused about them.

@jhpot nice one, that helped clear a few questions of mine 👍
@jhpot Excellent article -- thank you!
@jhpot Great article. Hits all the right notes. I'll be sending it to my friends!
@jhpot Thank you for the informative article. I not only learned more about how to best use Mastodon, but I learned what rickrolling was. Hey, what can I say, I know a lot about pop culture but I am fast approaching being 80. 😆  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rickrolling

@jhpot Excellent article, thank you. I posted it to my Facebook friends, many of whom were around with me back in the early days of the internet and would appreciate Mastodon if they could just get started here.
@jhpot thank you for this! I’m a newbie here and it’s giving me such quirky early internet nostalgia - I forgot how fun and odd twitter was early on, and I’m reconnecting with that spirit here, it’s beautiful
