A universal flu vaccine that protects against all strains of the [influenza] virus could be available in the next two years, according to a leading scientist.

An experimental vaccine based on the same mRNA technology used in the highly successful Covid jabs was found to protect mice and ferrets against severe influenza, paving the way for clinical trials in humans.

people ask 'why is open source software so poorly designed' and then they get into industry and realize that all b2b software is even worse. then they go back and try to use something they used to use a couple years ago & can't figure it out. because it turns out that almost all software is poorly designed, but we overlook the workarounds we do for the flaws in the software we're most accustomed to, and to the degree that open source software is exceptionally bad, it's because it's made by professionals during their off time or built on some proprietary software that had its source donated to apache or something. when people make software that scratches their own personal itches, that software is easy to use in that particular domain.
You can tell Pokemon is still aimed at children, despite its enthusiastic adult audience, by the fact that there are no pokemon yet whose theme is "does the laundry" or "makes you a nice dinner" or "mops the floors while everyone else is sleeping each night".
Now that we're starting to see more impersonation accounts on Mastodon, a reminder that verified websites are a thing. It's not perfect, but implementable at the individual level, and this is how we know for example which of these is the real @stephenfry - and it's not the one with the meaningless checkmark. :)
“You have journalists and activists in authoritarian regimes in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia who are now even at the mercy of even more vicious trolls with no ability to fight back. It's literally life or death for people.” Musk doesn't appear to care.

I keep a scrapbook/visual diary of all my projects - this is my latest experiments with tea toned cyanotype on Japanese paper.

We want to add the official #Tor onion service for f-droid.org as an official mirror, so that clients will automatically use it. Please test by sharing the repo link to #FDroid client then add it as a mirror:
https://gitlab.com/fdroid/admin/-/issues/12#note_1184095205

This should prompt to add it as a mirror, which is safe since the keys need to match. Click cancel if it offers to add a new repo.

Add a Tor onion service for official F-Droid repos (#12) · Issues · F-Droid / admin · GitLab

I'm already using 2 F-Droid repos, which are accessible via Tor hidden service (The Guardian Project) and suggest that you also add Tor hidden services for your own...

There is a built-in slowness to the #fediverse, because it is federated.

When I post something, it'll take some time until all my followers see that post. This changes expectations of immediate feedback in a very positive way for me.

It makes me think a bit longer and possibly editing again before I hit that post button. It adds more weight to what I say IMHO. So, in that sense, I hope it stays as slow as it is :) #FediTips

Small #FediTip: if you encounter a message or thread that is in any way useful to you, bookmark it straight away.

Since the fediverse doesn't have full text searches, it will be very difficult to find that particular thing again a few days later. Especially if you cannot remember who posted it or it has no hashtags.

Periodically review your bookmarks to do something with them and you should be set.

Disturbed by reports of Black Mastodon users—Black women in particular—having negative experiences on this app, including being randomly banned for discussions of racism. Some of these users will not come back. All will share their experiences. The answer is not to condescendingly lecture them on “how the fediverse works,” as if their experiences are inevitable, nor to swear to do better next time. (There may not be one.) It’s to do better now lest the reputation of this app be cemented.
