Something that has bothered me for a while... A lot of people use LinkTree for creating a profile with all their #socialmedia #links... The problem is #LinkTree is a data harvesting / tracker site.

Thankfully @eposvox pointed out another service to me (via his profile) today: https://bio.link/ - it's a free to use alternative, that doesn't track personal info beyond click throughs (no IP, no cookie, etc.)

It's from the Buy-Me-A-Coffee folks and looks really really good.

Bio Link: Launch Your Site in Seconds

A simple “bio link” for your socials. Designed for mobile, but packed with features for a complete website

@Unatributed @eposvox I opened an AllMyLinks account after I was told that Linktree was hostile to sex workers. Turns out that a number of sites won’t allow AML urls. I’m wondering how BioLink treats SWers & how other sites treat BioLink.

@amaditalks @eposvox That's a site I would not recommend for a simple Link aggregator / listing site. Their privacy policy (https://allmylinks.com/privacy) is pretty explicit about the gathering personally identifiable information, without having any clear retention policy, or really clear statements on what is shared, etc.

I get it that some of it might be justified (like for the eCommerce portion of the site), but it sounds like there aren't sufficient controls or standards in place, IMO.

@amaditalks @eposvox I don't know about Bio Link's policy towards Adult sites / Sexwork... Probably would have something in their FAQ / Help.

@amaditalks @eposvox

The BioLink TOS (https://bio.link/terms) says:

[You may not...] "include any sexually explicit material (including pictures and language) on your Page itself or your account itself;"

That's the closest the come to the subject of Adult materials...

@amaditalks @Unatributed hmmm the “on page itself” does sound like deliberate language as to NOT block links out to it. I’ve seen people use it for OF
@eposvox @amaditalks Yeah, I think they are just being clear that they don't want explicit language...but linking to a site by name like OF isn't an issue.
@Unatributed @amaditalks honestly, when you can just use a basic site generator to host a static page one on your own domain :)
As much as I hate when people recommend over the top steps for simple solutions, these days most website tools (square space, wix, Wordpress, etc) make it as easy as it gets
@eposvox @amaditalks Until I saw your use of BioLink, I was thinking of just creating a page on one of my sites. Might still do that.. But just think it might be easier to maintain through something like BioLink...
@Unatributed @amaditalks Yeah I just have a domain masking to my bio.link now just so I don't have to fight with designing lmao

@Unatributed @eposvox there is also DSGVO-compliant (German/EU data protection law) https://www.wonderlink.de/ if you need similar functionality.

Truthfully though, I prefer to just append a static html file of my own.

@jakob @eposvox

While I'm no legal expert, I think based on the point that they don't gather information from visitors to your page (beyond counting link clicks), they avoid most of the concerns of GDPR / DSGVO.

From a user (ie, page creator) standpoint, they are pretty clear on the information they gather: https://help.bio.link/en/articles/5306279-bio-link-privacy-policy -- which I think covers them from the GDPR / DSGVO requirements.

Yeah - I was thinking of setting up a page on my site too. I can probably create a nicer design...

Bio Link Privacy policy

@Unatributed @eposvox @mollyboom I hadn’t even looked into that! Yuck! I’ll investigate this, thank you!

I’m building a website and will probably have a self-hosted linktree as part of it.

After reading this, I switched from Linktree to Biolink 🙏 Thanks for the tip.

But they need to add Mastodon in their list of Socials!

The feature request is already logged, and NEEDS UPVOTES. You need to sign in first, of course, but it is easy & free. Link:

Mastodon social link | Voters | Bio Link

@deborahh @Unatributed I pinged them on Twitter about it, happy to upboat here!
@eposvox @Unatributed I chat messaged them and they asked me to upvote the feature :-)
@deborahh @eposvox Up-voted and commented... I'd really like to see support for many #FediVerse platforms...
@Unatributed @eposvox thanks for the tip! I will switch or build a page.
@Unatributed Thanks for this! I've been debating scrapping linktree for a while.
@Unatributed @eposvox LinkTree also dabbles in NFTs, if anyone needed another reason to avoid them
@jordan @eposvox oh geez, that's another big 🤮 in my book.
@Unatributed @eposvox This is awesome. I'm always trying to find good alternatives to the mainstream options.
Re: last boost, I didn't know that about linktree, but bio.link sounds cool, so my "other fedi accounts" list in my bio is now replaced!
@Unatributed @eposvox according to their privacy policy they still collect and store user data for marketing companies or governments.

@gaysis @eposvox they do on your account. They don't do it on visitors to your page. That's the major difference. Link Tree and others mine data from the visitors to your page.

Imo, if law enforcement wants info about my account it's no big deal. If I start getting a lot of annoying junk mail from marketers I'd probably rethink using them.

@Unatributed Oh, cool. I didn't know about this. Thanks for sharing!
@Unatributed @eposvox Thanks for the rec, I've set one up for my band http://halfpagan.com but it's ironic they don't have Mastodon in their "socials" — yet
Half Pagan

We're a rock band based in Bulbancha. You might call it New Orleans. Sometimes we do songs about cemetery picnics or the mythology of ancient Babylon. We're Half Pagan.

@editor @eposvox if you go over to the suggestions area of BioLink (it's on the question button on the dashboard) there's a suggestion to add Mastodon, up-vote that suggestion to help us get the devs to add Mastodon.
