Alright, folks, I'm making my move. Find me at @editor in a few minutes. It's been great, @gruifor! Thanks for running the floe.earth server.

I was scandalized when I learned of Nir Eyal's book, Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products. I had to wonder about the apparent moral and ethical bankruptcy that could even allow such a manual to be published without any apparent sense of shame. I went looking for critical reviews; happy to have found them. I'll just add that if you read Eyal's book, please follow it up with something like Cal Newport's Digital Minimalism for a dose of critical perspective.

The New #Climate Math on #Hurricanes
For the first time, we can calculate how much #climatechange impacts a single storm’s severity.
Climate change has intensified #hurricane wind speeds by an average of 19 mph in 84% of #NorthAtlantic hurricanes between 2019-2024, according to new research that links warming #ocean temperatures to storm intensity for individual hurricanes.

Good morning, #NewOrleans! We just made it through the longest night. There's a chill in the air for this shortest day. Happy #solstice from the Crescent City Gaian Guild. @noladon

One thing is clear: healthcare systems are failing the people they’re supposed to serve.

But this isn’t just about healthcare - it’s about systemic exploitation, which is also reflected in housing, food, labor, and beyond. But there’s a way forward.

If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, you better dream up some climate policies too.

I've been discussing the recent assassination of the CEO of #UnitedHealthcare with colleagues in the @IDN. Personally, it feels like something has shifted in US popular discourse. Even my teenage daughter has been reporting to me the sympathy being expressed on social platforms like TikTok. My instinct is that a thoughtfully articulated #degrowth perspective would be helpful. Would love to hear what others think about this connection.
