I keep hearing that #Mastodon is not likely to replace #Twitter. To that I say: so what?
I've been contributing to the #Linux desktop for the last 15 years not because it's likely to replace #Windows, but because providing people with free desktop is the right thing to do.
I use and support Mastodon not because it's likely to replace Twitter, but because it's a social network done right.
This quote by Václav Havel is quite fitting: "Hope is a state of mind, not of the world. Hope, in this deep and powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well, or willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously heading for success, but rather an ability to work for something because it is good."
@sesivany Wonderful quote. I was unfamiliar with it, and found some more context here: https://www.vhlf.org/havel-quotes/disturbing-the-peace/
Disturbing the Peace – The Vaclav Havel Library Foundation

@sesivany Yep yep -- this is precisely right

Mastodon serves different needs than Twitter, just as Linux serves different needs than other OSes

I actively bounce between machines running MacOS, Windows and Linux, and between various online social spheres

@sesivany Regardless of whether or not it will ever replace Twitter, it's sometimes a good idea to just explore and try something new altogether. That step alone is what had me posting art.
@sesivany Agree! Give people an alternative!
@sesivany Thank you for your work on desktop Linux. I have been using Linux on the desktop since 2003.
@sesivany, I think it's the lock-in effect we are having, the feeling we cannot move to another social network without substantial inconvenience.
@sesivany can you help with my #ubuntu / #linuxmint question?
@sesivany it’s very much like Linux. My experience so far is that of trying to record Netflix onto a Betamax to avoid connecting your tv to the internet
@sesivany It isnt likely to replace Twitter for brands and marketers. But it just might for actual people. Quite simply because the balance has shifted. Mastodon has stayed where it is. Twitter’s usp has arguably now been broken from the perspective of a user. This is my second ‘go’ here. I think i’ll stay. Its nice.
@sesivany I agree 100%. Twitter has become some twisted place in many respects, however, from what I have seen so far of Mastodon - this place is anything but and although I am a newbie and don't know my way around much, I really like it here.
@sesivany I've used Linux on the desktop for 15 years. A big thank you for your contributions! (Also please can you fix that annoying bug where.. just kidding 😉)

@sesivany This level of positive vibes is what I need.

Happy weekend!

@sesivany It's fascinating that, to some, dominance is the only measure of success.
@sesivany I use desktop linux and feel lost on windows, constrained on Mac. Thanks!
@sesivany Also, a bit of competition keeps the big guys on their toes. Windows would be awful without Linux/Mac competition.
@martinvermeer @sesivany windows seems to have decided to copy the others. So much for telling my wife to opt for a windows machine from work because it's what she's used to!

@sesivany
Because we may be at another point like when Netscape open-sourced their browser, changing the dynamics of the browser market and reinforcing the position of open standards and Free software at the heart of the web.

200 million users may soon be looking for their new home. There will be many “lock-in” contenders for that position.

If Mastodon is seen as a good choice by enough people, it has the chance to change how *everyone* uses—and thinks about—social media.

@sesivany Could't agree more. What makes it good is precisely what it is 😉 Not to mention the whole concept of the #Fediverse.
@sesivany I hope it never does, or I'll have to leave Mastdon the same way I left Twitter years ago.

@sesivany

There's a lot of social media professionals (not just engineers but all sorts) who suddenly have their wheels up.

The thing about people with their wheels up is they tend to surprise you with what they do next.

@sesivany good statement. I‘ve been using Linux on my private computers for more than 15 years now, thus minimizing the Microsoft footprint in my personal environment. Mastodon gives
me a similar opportunity in terms of social media.
@sesivany People are still using Windows?!?? *Shudder* Gross!

@sesivany It’s a good analogy but also imagine if Windows started to get significantly worse over time. Despite criticisms it’s still currently a very capable OS - but imagine if that changed, I’d assume many people currently on the fence would start to consider Linux more seriously, myself included

(edit: not meaning Linux isn't a serious OS, it absolutely is. Rather I'd consider it seriously for my own use cases)

@toastymctoast
Well Windows DID get worse over time. XP was great, forget the rest.
@sesivany
@davidallengreen Begs the question "replace for whom?". Linux replaced my windows desktop a decade ago and it's just fine, ta.
@sesivany I am a person who has tooted this and what I've found after hanging out here for a bit is that I actually enjoy #mastodon so much more. It's just so much less stressful. I understand the existing community's anxieties around the birdsite exodus. I hope the total numbers end up being manageable.
@sesivany wanting to find more information and community on open source software is how I found my way to mastodon in the first place.

@sesivany

100%. Important point that people miss:

The Linux Desktop made desktops MUCH better even for people who don't use it.

Both because of the ideas they inspired (got stolen?) and simply because the competitive pressure is right there.

Mastodon will probably do the same, if not better.

@sesivany #Mastodonuts probably won't replace twitter for everyone, but it's doing a good job so far of replacing it for me.
@Marnina @sesivany I've posted more on here than I ever did on Twitter. Because of the algorithm, Twitter feels like throwing a bottled letter into the ocean. But Mastadon feels like visiting a local diner, or a pub.
@lostpolaris you'll appreciate this
@sesivany I don't want a new Twitter. I want something different with people with interesting, informed things to say. Lots of art, creators, academics. People who might have interesting exchanges rather than playground insult slinging. This seems good for that, the other place was not.
@sesivany I've been joining social websites etc since 1996. One website doesn't replace another. We just migrate as one service gives up, another is bought, and the third loses its way. The hardest thing is finding new communities. This is the part that takes time. Creating an account is easy, it's the months or years of use that are the challenge.

@sesivany why can’t it just be valuable on its own? People use platforms for different reasons, and so far I love Mastodon.

Just wish I knew some more people here :)

@sesivany while the overall sentiment is true, details are not same, IMHO. GNU/Linux is unable to replace Windows because it requires huge effort to get known manufacturers make it a default option; those are companies with boards reporting to shareholders, and such is a risky move. Mastodon won't replace twitter because mastodon is destituted system that doesn't guarantee same level of engagement as Twitter, and thus converting it to a business platform won't be possible. Somehow this is a win.
@sesivany It's incredibly good and clearly has a commited dev and admin community driving it forward.
@sesivany I approve of that statement. People deserves another option even if it's not everyone's first option. We live in a world caught in a mindset that two options can't co-exist. that we're all doomed to One option for everything. That another option can't exist in the shadow of another.
@sesivany that's right. I share the thought.

@sesivany Ahoj Jiři !

Can't say I am a Slavia Praha Fan, but i do like Praha & Czechia.

My first trip was in 1997, to the Golden Helmet / Zlata Přilba in Pardubice.

I will be in back in March, staying in Vinohrady for the first time. Prior to this, I have mostly stayed in Karlín & Holešovice.

Oh, I also have a Czech Lion Tattoo / Česky Lev Tetování

#speedway #PlochaDraha #Prague #praha

@sesivany Plus, linux based Chromebooks have become a huge thing. It happens sometimes slowly bit by bit, then all at once.
@sesivany Great point! Even if Twitter changes course and survives, having an open source alternative helps keep the corps honest. I’ve devoted a lot of my career to supporting open source education in the form of #Moodle and love exploring other tools, be it Linux, Wordpress, or indeed Mastodon.
@sesivany I couldn’t agree with you more! I’ve been thinking the same thing.
@sesivany only been here a week but the two seem to interface well.
@sesivany totally the right perspective
@sesivany I'm not sure "replace" is the word I'd use. "Survive", maybe?
@sesivany It's replaced twitter for me, and that's all I care about. Browsing mastodon is so much nicer than doomscrolling the birdapp.
@sesivany Well as a now full-time user of Linux, thank you. I made the switch to save money and don't want to switch back now.
@sesivany I read yesterday that Blue Bird has lost 50% of corporate sponsors.
@sesivany @ottocrat I first and foremost use Mastodon because I genuinely like it here and actually do find it better than Twitter for most things. But yeah, what you said too!
