Probably not going to talk about this on Twitter (good lord that site is toxic) but it really does suck that the world’s richest man had a whim and now suddenly people who rely on it for income just… can’t anymore.

Books don’t actually pay that well, but I was able to cut down to 4 days at my day job, 1 day to write books (something I’m proud of!) but looking at followers drop off, I think that’s now just gone.

This was a fun first toot huh

@Jimmfelton an Italian Elon Musk parody from a few years ago causing the downfall of a top social media platform wasn’t one of my predictions that’s for sure
@Jimmfelton people joining in mass, will take some time but this is explosive growth https://bitcoinhackers.org/@mastodonusercount/109307127968852669

Bitcoin Mastodon

@Jimmfelton

It does suck, but now you're on Mastodon and that won't disappear as easily.

@Jimmfelton I sell a lot of pots through Twitter and feel a bit sick that that may be gone too.
@hasenschneck mate it’s awful. Really hope it doesn’t go and you can carry on selling etc.
@hasenschneck @Jimmfelton I looked up your work and it's stunning. I hope this proves to be a good platform for you (and for James too).
@Jimmfelton at least we can laugh when he eventually sells its corpse for $1million

@Jimmfelton I think it also says a lot about Twitter that even one of its more successful characters finds the place toxic.

Like doing a stand up at a bear knuckle brawl.

@faithfulpundit @Jimmfelton

That made me smile #sorryNotSorry - imagining a brawl with people wearing bear knuckles

@kemisola Ha! And I'm normally so good at avoiding typos!
@faithfulpundit Me too ... then yesterday I declared that "I never crease to be amazed ....".
Creased me up when I spotted it (but it was a good excuse to try the delete-and-repost option)
@Jimmfelton buy Jim’s excellent books you losers
@traceyno thank you and also good lord my book is huge, rarely see it with a person as a frame of reference
@Jimmfelton ITS MASSIVE JAMES
@traceyno @Jimmfelton Oh wow. You can't tell when it's on a Kindle.
@s @Jimmfelton I have to put it down to drink my tea but it’s worth this small sacrifice
@Jimmfelton @traceyno I've followed you for a while on the Bird, but didn't know you'd written a book. Thanks to Mastodon I do - so I'll go out and buy it.
@bobcool @Jimmfelton for a split second I thought you were talking to me and I felt enormous pressure to write my first book very quickly
@bobcool @traceyno ah thank you mate! Hope you like it :)

@traceyno @Jimmfelton That looks right up my street. I've seen a fair few of your tweets over the years but had no idea you wrote books. Glad you came to Masto.

Added to my Christmas list.

@Jimmfelton
It’s like he’s fixated on one thing that’s bothering him at all costs. He’s determined to prove you can charge for social media to prove a point, whatever the consequences.
@Jimmfelton On the plus side... A whole new audience to educate about #MilkCoke?
@Jimmfelton It absolutely sucks. Even through all the enjoyable shitposting, it absolutely sucks for creative people.
@Jimmfelton I don't get the joke. Is it post-modern?

@Jimmfelton I think the best outcome is that in about a month or two he realises how fucked he is and just sells it for $5

Except he's such a egotistical bellend I think he'd rather smash it to pieces than let it go.

@Jimmfelton look at it as material for your next book, "A billion times Elon Musk was a total spanner"
@Jimmfelton can you put your Mastodon address in your twitter bio/pinned tweet, then anyone migrating here can easily find you? Finding people is a bit of a task here.
If lots of people migrate, maybe this can help balance the twitter loss, and it may be a bit of a knee jerk reaction and many will eventually return.
I know that it doesn't help now, as transition takes time, and there are a lot of ifs, but I hope this is a short term issue for anyone relying on twitter for business.
@Jimmfelton Funny how people with more money than anyone can possibly ever need would rather use it to spoil other people's lives rather than, say, removing poverty. I can't think of a single billionaire who isn't a cunt.
@Jimmfelton the demand for smth like Twitter is there so I hope that either Twitter recovers after Elmo is done humiliating himself or the alternatives will pick up the slack sooner or later

@Jimmfelton I'm sorry for your troubles, I hope mastodon can be a place where people can make money too. I'll bet that Elon's actions have accelerated that process a lot, actually.

Welcome to the #fediverse, we're glad your here 😊

@Jimmfelton it’s absolutely lovely to have all my mutual follies coming over and making this place more like home!
@Jimmfelton I guess a lesson to us all not to put our eggs in one birds nest. Enjoying Sunburn though if it’s any consolation.
@BellwetherFarm @Jimmfelton I think it’s a societal lesson to own our own stuff. The problems, though, are that requires time, money and expertise and so often isn’t viable. Othertimes, people are just lazy. I’ve written plenty of Twitter threads that should have been blog posts. Looking back, I’m baffled at previous me for that. (Since I have the expertise and a live blog, my own domain, etc.)

@Jimmfelton hopefully things will take off here and within a year you'll be back to shilling your books with your "oh shucks guys, did I mention I'm an author?" shtick. :)

I think this place has potential and things can happen very fast in the social media world but there does seem to be a massive tech savvy entry barrier. Might be a good idea to make a more user friendly "mastodon lite" or something for the majority of people so they can jump in with no fuss.

@Jimmfelton I can't see how it will ever recover either. The damage has been done now. People will now always be aware that the risk of someone coming with a ton of money and buying something that we all took for granted is real. And that makes it difficult to have any trust in the platform anymore. I can see Facebook being next. Decentralised and not owned by anyone is really the only security we have.
@asjmcguire @Jimmfelton I thought the Facebook shipped had sailed a long time ago, particularly in terms of trust

@robotrob @Jimmfelton so far Facebook hasn't had a mass exodus. Both Facebook an Twitter have in the past introduced changes that made the userbase angry and claim they were going to leave - but then a week later, very few people had actually left.

This Twitter incident though, is different - and people on Facebook are going to be more concerned about it's future because of it.

@Jimmfelton

It's almost pointless being on Twitter as a little person now, because nothing you post or reply is seen.

He's killed it dead.

@nutcracker @Jimmfelton That’s my thought. If i’m invisible, and i’ll never see the posts of the other nobodies i follow then its pointless to me. And even if it werent Elon - i’m not paying $8 a month on offchance everyone im interested in does… Question? Have they implemented yet? Trying to spot changes in the timeline content…

@SinisterBulb @Jimmfelton

I'm 100% sure my tweet replies are being algrorithmically supressed / hidden. Zero likes or comments on any of them for the last few days.

Not that they are that thrilling, admittedly but I thought my @sh&tter meme might have got some lols. (see my pinned toot, if images are working)

@Jimmfelton Apart from the twitter clusterfuck, do you think the average guy on street realises how non-lucrative being a ‘best selling author’ is? Its quite shocking really. Someone somewhere is making money but it rarely seems to be the creatives.
@Jimmfelton
The big followings are what will prevent high-profile users leaving Twitter.
Some for revenue reasons (like yours) others for vanity, because re-tweets and replies fluff the ego, of course.
But... the two can run side-by-side until migration is viable.
As long as Mastodon's tech holds up...

@Jimmfelton Think of this as a new market, a new audience, a new opportunity.

Yes, it will take time and effort to build your network here, you need to interact with people, but it's a new network to create.

Good luck, I hope it works out well for you.

@Jimmfelton just did a random search of your Twitter handle in the hope you'd joined here. And here you are!
@Jimmfelton It sucks. Although without a large following I often felt like I was shouting into a black hole in birdland.
@Jimmfelton Welcome James. Whatever the reason, it's nice to have you here. Good luck on Mastodon. I'm only just learning the ropes, but it seems a good place.

@Jimmfelton James, I'm an independent musician who started my career on Twitter in the early days, so I feel some of your pain. I made a video about it this week https://youtu.be/IBb9sYdjtvk

I've managed to build other stuff up alongside Twitter thank goodness but I don't know what non-direct effect all this stuff is going to have.

Oh, Elon! I built my music career on Twitter...now what?!

YouTube
@Jimmfelton seemed to me that was his motivation behind the blue tick monetisation: folk like you were using the platform to make a living and the platform should therefore extract a piece of that (ignoring completey that it already has your content for free and that engagement drives ad numbers). An oddly non-genius move.
@Jimmfelton same. This has been bothering me a lot. I launched a fairly successful side hustle as a freelance journalist on Twitter and almost all my work came from there. Now it's just gone, at a time when I can ill afford it, all down to the capriciousness of a single idiot
@Jimmfelton James! Welcome aboard!
@Jimmfelton I know the feeling. I dropped teaching to 3 days to allow more writing time but I’m barely scraping in any royalties. Also my publisher’s union is taking strike action which I fully support but it’s worrying what effect that will have on authors.
@Jimmfelton sending hugs, you are one of my fave people on Twitter so great to see you here anyway 💜
@Jimmfelton Man, it just shows you its all a house of cards. This is the next evolutionary step but I feel worse for those with mobility and social issues that are losing whole communities they've built online over there.
@Jimmfelton i am pretty sure you will be able to promote your books here in a bit. Just give it some time and think of it as a sabbatical between jobs
