KEEP IN MIND! #Mastodon doesn't work like #Twitter!

Have you just made the #Twexit or the #TwitterMigration?

Favorites ⭐ - they're not "likes". They don't "elevate" posts, they just the poster know you liked their post.

Boosts 🔁 - these push someone's post into your friends feeds (and help discovery).

So if you ⭐ my posts, that's great (and I love you too)!

But if you 🔁 posts, then more people see them!

OH! - #Hashtags are how you search!

@jerrylevine how do the different servers work? I want to find people with similar interests but don’t want to be in just one pigeon hole. I know it’s not Twitter, but hoping to see things I’m interested in plus random fun stuff
@erikanolte if a metaphor helps, think of instances as being villages (if small), towns, or even cities). You can see and hear most of what goes on in the village easily. It’s your neighborhood. And you can get to know and follow individuals in other towns. And track public conversations between communities on a subject (hashtag).
@erikanolte @jerrylevine Yeah hashtags are king here. But you can follow people from other servers in the one you are, it's a bit annoying, you have to search their profile URL and follow them from the search results. But the functionality exists, so if there is someone on another server you want to follow, you can.
@mdstevens0612 @erikanolte @jerrylevine Yes, you nailed it. This is the biggest hurdle to mingle people easily.

@erikanolte @jerrylevine

For now, I've just been browsing other interest-specific servers and just following people that interest me on that server back in my main server.

@erikanolte @jerrylevine That’s very much how the different servers work - not single-topic discussion so much as loose communities with a shared vibe. And it’s easy to create accounts on multiple servers if you want to get a sense of the options - you don’t have to migrate your existing account

@jerrylevine Thank you. That has to be one of the most useful posts I've come across in a world of "how to use Mastodon" posts.

I often think that the most difficult stuff to learn about a new system is the stuff that those who are already familiar with it forget others don't know.

@jerrylevine
Is there a way to repost something with my own comment on top? So like the Quote Tweet feature over at the DyingBird ?
@jerrylevine Thank you Jerry. I was thinking a star was the same as a Twitter like. Now I know to boost posts too!
@jerrylevine A bit like Tumblr then. Reblogs do more than likes.
@jerrylevine that’s good info I pushed the share button thing (can’t find emoji) 🙃
Thanks Jerry! This is so helpful! #TwitterMigration
@jerrylevine so in other words, it works like how Twitter used to work back when it was good :)

@unfnknblvbl @jerrylevine

and #twitter still worked like this the last years if you had your timeline set to "as it happens" instead of "top tweets".

@jerrylevine thanks. I’m new so good to know.
@jerrylevine thanks for this basic lesson. Very new and trying to navigate mastodon 😍
@jerrylevine Thanks for these tips. I imagine I will still trip and bump into things, but every hint helps!
@jerrylevine is there a way to bookmark toots?
@Sjksanders @jerrylevine If you have Android the app Tusky let's you bookmark toots.
@jerrylevine thanks for the tip this is all new to me
@jerrylevine What is the #Fediverse ?
@SaysDana @jerrylevine Not trying to stomp on Jerry's toes, but saw the note and am chiming in -- it's the distributed network (federation) of Mastodon servers that comprise this alternate model of social media
@jerrylevine thanks for this! I definitely thought ⭐️ worked the same as ❤️
@jerrylevine Great info, thanks!
@debacle97 @jerrylevine
Thank you. I’m a newbie and trying to learn.
@jerrylevine thanks, that was helpful!

@jerrylevine In other words, exactly like Twitter in "Latest Tweets" mode.

Those who turned off "Home" mode long ago may find the transition far easier.

@jerrylevine Any idea on how messaging works yet? I tried it, but messages appeared as public posts. ???
@jerrylevine That’s exactly how I thought Twitter worked too though? 🤷🏻
@johnwallace @jerrylevine Not anymore, on Twitter anything you do now, either reply, like or retweet, may or may not push the post you interacted with into your followers’ TL. Seems completely arbitrary, it’s an opaque algorithm that just does whatever. 🤷
@johnwallace @jerrylevine People using Home rather than Latest Tweets see all sorts of rubbish thanks to likes and replies. The Mastodon behaviour is basically the same as Latest Tweets, as far as I can tell, except that you know that everyone else will be using it too.
@mudri @jerrylevine Good to know! I was a “Latest tweets” kinda guy! 👌🏼
@johnwallace @jerrylevine same, I definitely didn’t have promotion in mind when I liked things on Twitter.
@jerrylevine @yuhline since you were asking earlier (I was wondering about this too).
@jerrylevine Do ⭐ really have 0 effects on a post? interesting, yeah hadn't thought about that

@jerrylevine I love these #TipsAndTricks

Mastodon is pretty different than Twitter. Not better or worse, just different. Being able to quickly identify these differences and change my habits is super helpful!

So far really enjoying my experience over here. Mobile apps maybe need a bit of love on iOS though 🥲

@jerrylevine Thank you! This is helpful for a newbie!
@jerrylevine Remembering to add hashtags to everything will be the hardest for me. #forgetful
@jerrylevine OooOOooo. Thank you!! I never would have figured that out on my own. (That’s not saying much, but still, haha.)
@jerrylevine Thanks so much for this. I am us getting my toes wet today and this is wonderfully useful. Best. Maureen "Moe"
@jerrylevine Thanks for this, very helpful!
@jerrylevine How about bookmarks? How do I push a post there?

@jerrylevine You know we're in the new world when Kathy Griffin shows up in your feed with tech tips.

It has a distinctly Rebel Alliance feel to it.

@jerrylevine That's pretty much like twitter used to work around 2010, isn't it? People like me who didn't like all those twitter-updates should feel right at home, then.
@jerrylevine thanks!
Bit of a learning curve what all the icons do
@jerrylevine I was immediately happy when I figured out this place didn't have "likes".
@jerrylevine go on, take a boost. Thanks for educating.
@jerrylevine Funny, I never realized that that likes on Twitter did anything other than letting people know I liked their posts. In retrospect, I’m glad I wasn’t trying to game the system.
@jerrylevine so favorites are the bookmarks of twitter ?
@jerrylevine Thanks, those are helpful.

@jerrylevine oh thank god, my likes don’t show up on other ppl’s feeds

I can like any post I want in peace without blasting my followers with spicy stuff lol

@jerrylevine I'd found this to be the basis of a different etiquette at Mastodon. Boost conversation pieces here much more so than at Twitville. Seems overly friendly. Sort of like pointing at someone seated next you when they say something of interest.
