Read about the young (29) founder of Mastodon, why he created it, and the surprisingly effective way it isolates hate groups.

Thousands of users have joined Mastodon since Elon Musk took control of Twitter. Mastodon's founder Eugen Rochko says it's been a vindication

@jayrosen_nyu thanks for sharing I was wondering how this came to be... amazing achievement to create something like this
@jayrosen_nyu Thanks for that; excellent article.
@jayrosen_nyu this was especially good:
@edgeoforever @jayrosen_nyu I was going to paste the same snippet. Excellent summary.
@jayrosen_nyu "I called it Mastodon because I’m not good at naming things. I just chose whatever came to my mind at the time." He is disarmingly humble and lovely. I'm pretty psyched about this. Thanks so much for sharing!
@jayrosen_nyu Jay, participating here has really given me a rare moment of optimism about the possibilities of community lead communication.
@jayrosen_nyu If you or your crowd hasn’t seen this yet, this is a really great explanation on how federation/defederation works to contain bad actors… https://conf.tube/videos/watch/d8c8ed69-79f0-4987-bafe-84c01f38f966

@joy That was a great video. Fascinating! Thank you for posting it. I feel ever so slightly less like a fish out of water in my understanding of what I've stumbled into
@jayrosen_nyu am trying to get more info from a long time Black mastodon user, but he says there was a Black run server here & they got run off the service by people harassing them. Apparently they shut down their server. So I think it’s important to actually get the experiences of non-white people, women or other communities who might be on the receiving end of hate, harrassment on whether the protocol / structure is indeed effective at tamping or isolating hate/ harrassment

@jayrosen_nyu Setting aside some problematic decisions and statements that Eugene made years ago, what is missing is awareness of the underlying work on ActivityPub that underpins Mastodon and other “fediverse” software.

@jayrosen_nyu Thank you for sharing -- this is a great read. And, as an added bonus, thank you for making this 28-year-old feel young when every other app is hard at work making me feel old 😅
@jayrosen_nyu
Excellent article. We in the US, have some troubling notions about free speech and the right to bear arms that need sorting out.
@jayrosen_nyu Thank you for sharing this. Also I found him here @Gargron
@jayrosen_nyu An excellent quote from the above article:
"If you allow the most intolerant voices to be as loud as they want to, you’re going to shut down voices of different opinions as well. So allowing free speech by just allowing all speech is not actually leading to free speech, it just leads to a cesspit of hate."
(aka the paradox of tolerance.)

We are on #Mastodon since August 2020, but gained thousends of followers in the last few days...

...thanks Elon, we guess.  😉

@jayrosen_nyu Thanks for sharing. It’s great to see how Eugen @Gargron initiated Mastodon when he was only 23 years old.
@jayrosen_nyu @smaran @Gargron I agree with the founder of Mastodon (not a bad name, by the way). It's interesting to see how some people think of freedom of speech as "I can say whatever I want". That's anarchy and abuse of freedom, not freedom itself. Nobody is free in a place where everyone can be abused, insulted and defamed. Indeed it seems that, in general, Europe better grasps the meaning of freedom and human rights for its citizens.
@jayrosen_nyu
And today the German Government and ministries joined Mastodon.

@jayrosen_nyu

Such a refreshing read, thank you for sharing, and had the Musky one not buy Twitter, I doubt if I would of found this platform.

@jayrosen_nyu I just joined. Isolating hate groups is obviously a good thing. However I’m a bit concerned of the opposite effect - echo chambers, which can be very unhealthy and detrimental to human growth. Time will tell I guess.
@jayrosen_nyu 👏🏽 great article and gray job Rochko!
@jayrosen_nyu Having been on Mastodon since the beginning, it’s nice to see Eugen’s goal has scaled rather nicely. The social circles it creates tend to be rather positive and are just super kind.
@jayrosen_nyu This is a great experiment, but besides isolating hate groups it has many other side effects. Instead of one domineering authoritarian person who controls everything, Mastodon has created a couple of dozen authoritarian tightly controlled communities, each one no more fair or safe than Twitter. We just have a federation of smaller Twitters working together, but the actual problems still remain the same. It gives the illusion of progress, without addressing the underlying issues.
