Useful information on what you’ll find in your timeline. #Mastodon

@jj_79 The diagram looks similar to this one, which resurfaces every couple of months:

Also, one case is not covered by those diagrams, which confused me for a long time. Basically, if you follow person X who creates a post that is a reply (not standalone) to a post by person Y, and you also follow person Y, then you will also see the reply by person X in your home timeline. (Normally you would not see a reply.)

Attached: 1 image A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines! So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too. This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature. [ #mastodon #meta #tootorial #howto #mastopedia #mastotip ]

@jj_79 how do the different timelines work on the Android app?
@offalrick No clue, I just use iOS…

@offalrick @jj_79

I use Tusky android application for Mastodon. Just I like it more for the interface and options than the official one...and "the federated" is this icon same as in the Mastodon web interface (see the image):

For you, in the official android app it should be in the "search 🔎" section (as well as hashtags, news etc.)

@insights @jj_79 ohhh I hadn't realised there were different apps as well. Gotta look more into that
@jj_79 so if I ran my own instance, by myself, I'd never see anything if I didn't follow anyone?
@simSalabim No clue, I’m not hosting anything myself but I’m in a different server .. how did you find this toot?
@jj_79 I was under the impression that you see all of the toots for any insurance that yours is federated with
@jj_79 exactly what I was looking for. Maybe this will help you @Riiiiiiiike
Thank you @jj_79 This is by far the clearest explanation I’ve seen. Very helpful.
@jj_79 what’s an “instance”? The same as a “server”?
@pwbogaart Yep. That would be the best description. Could be more physical servers but grouped as one entity, basically..
@jj_79 in the Mastodon app I cant seem to find a local or federate timeline. Any better apps to use?
@Liesje28 Geen idee, ik ben hier ook nog maar net een dag 😜
@Liesje28 @jj_79 same- I don’t think I’ve seen anything in the app that defines the timelines as this flow describes them. Where are these other timelines?
@meeware @jj_79 I have just logged in via the browser and there they are clearly visible. In the app I have discouvered that when using the "search: icon you can swipe right through news, community etc and this covers the server timeline I guess. But it is suboptimal.
@Liesje28 @jj_79 ooooh search! Right. Ok just a different convention I guess. I’m happy to adapt and I’m sure there’s been some design process behind that. I’m new here, and I assume it’s on me to learn, not demand change.
@meeware @Liesje28 @jj_79 the official mastodon apps do not have these timelines, you have to use a browser or a third party app
@jj_79 is there a possibility to actually bookmark toots?
@caoilinn Should be. The website shows an option to display Bookmarks… haven’t found how to set it yet though
@jj_79 it seems to be an open feature request or do I miss anything? At least with the official mastodon iOS app I don’t find any bookmark option. https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/15522
@jj_79 that's strangely helpful
@jj_79 Does this also apply to how Search works for hashtags? A hashtag is only searchable if someone local has followed someone who used it or boosted a toot with it.

@jj_79 One missing bit: Does your instance subscribe to a *relay* that includes toots from @hello's instance? If yes, it shows in the federated timeline.

For smaller instances in particular, using a relay is a good way to improve discoverability.

E.g. see https://joinfediverse.wiki/index.php?title=Fediverse_relays

Fediverse relays - Join the Fediverse

@jj_79 What about the case, that someone you follow boosts a toot? Shouldn't it then appear in your home timeline?
@jj_79 very useful, But also, this shows that Mastodon requires quite a bit more effort to stay up to date. One needs to check all I guess that's the price to pay in order to avoid The Algorithm.
@jj_79 the federated and community timelines, do they show up in any mobile apps?
@jj_79 Useful info, thanks! Though while I have the "advanced" timeline with a bunch of different columns which show (for example) different hashtags, I'd like to be able to aggregate, say, multiple hashtags into one column (or, home and local timeline etc.) but I can't see how to do that.
I'm currently in danger of proliferating columns like I proliferate tabs in a browser.
@jj_79 thanks ! This explains a lot. Would you have something similar explaining when & why we are allowed to reboot a toot ?
@jj_79 Thanks! This was useful for us newbs.
@jj_79 Wait, there are three separate timelines (Home, Local, “Federated”)? What is an “instance”? Mastodon makes the American health-care system look like a model of simplicity!
@jj_79
I got to the second red square and I was already lost 😅
@Bengrama @jj_79 haha same here! I read someone saying they feel like they parents when they started using their first computer and I feel this is quite a fitting description
@jj_79 that's super useful, thank you!
@jj_79 interesting and useful. Thanks.
@jj_79 how do you view the federated timeline?

@jj_79 Unless I'm wrong I believe there is a missing scenario here:

"Did someone you are following boost post from "at"hello ?" --> Toot show in Home timeline
