@jj_79 The diagram looks similar to this one, which resurfaces every couple of months:

Also, one case is not covered by those diagrams, which confused me for a long time. Basically, if you follow person X who creates a post that is a reply (not standalone) to a post by person Y, and you also follow person Y, then you will also see the reply by person X in your home timeline. (Normally you would not see a reply.)
Details and source here:
Attached: 1 image A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines! So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too. This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature. [ #mastodon #meta #tootorial #howto #mastopedia #mastotip ]
I use Tusky android application for Mastodon. Just I like it more for the interface and options than the official one...and "the federated" is this icon same as in the Mastodon web interface (see the image):
For you, in the official android app it should be in the "search 🔎" section (as well as hashtags, news etc.)
@jj_79 One missing bit: Does your instance subscribe to a *relay* that includes toots from @hello's instance? If yes, it shows in the federated timeline.
For smaller instances in particular, using a relay is a good way to improve discoverability.
E.g. see https://joinfediverse.wiki/index.php?title=Fediverse_relays

@jj_79 Unless I'm wrong I believe there is a missing scenario here:
"Did someone you are following boost post from "at"hello ?" --> Toot show in Home timeline
