MOVED TO @vidar - follow that instead.

Techie, #scifi writer (galaxybound.com). Using this for now while I work on adding direct support for Mastodon/ActivityPub to a couple of my sites. Live in Croydon, London, UK. Originally from Norway. #sf #sff #sciencefiction #books #author #science #space

I'm closing in on moving to my own instance. Thanks to the move support in Mastodon none of you who follow me should need to do anything, but if you suddenly notice my handle is different, that's why.

The new handle will be @vidar

@mjf_pro @Lady_Star_Gem Nope, disrupting Twitter was a tactical triumph for conservatives. Twitter had long been a tool of community, organization, education and information for marginalized communities. Helped Biden get 82 million votes. Disrupting Twitter is the modern techie bombing of the Black church or opening fire in a gay club. Or burning down Black Wall Street in Tulsa. Disrupting marginalized spaces is terrorism 101 for Christian nationalist white supremacists.

A different astronomy and space science related image is featured each day, along with a brief explanation.

This week I've mainly been reading (no.14)
One of the books that really rekindled my interest in #sciencefiction was Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars (1992) (& the trilogy overall). The story of the colonialisation of #Mars & its subsequent battle for independence from Earth is grounded in a very clear notion of how this would play out in political economic terms. In this sense for academic political economists its the ideal read as a 'novel on the go' (see earlier post)
@bookstodon

Why scifi single-person space-fighter spacecraft make no sense militarily, scientifically, nor economically.

Actually turned out to be simpler than I though. If you're fine with the profile URL being on the sub-domain, Mastodon handles this fine without proxying anything, which is great. I'm going to need to test my new install a bit, but then I'll be ready to migrate this account to @vidar (if you follow me, don't worry about following that one - you should move over automatically when I move my account).

Nothing like getting a 500 internal error that spits back a page of JSON and no explanation after feeding in a 50-line yaml file to do what could be a 3-4 line load balance config.

Kubernetes is a burning trash pile.

My experience with Kubernetes so far is that it's an excellent way of making fairly simple things very complicated... I have a config for a cluster that's now more lines of horrible yaml bullshit than it'd take me to write a cluster orchestrator (been there, done that, might do so again).
Remaining job appears to be to get the load balancer rules sorted. And then I'm sure I'll run into all kinds of fun issues I haven't anticipated, but, but then again this was hardly built to accommodate my weird setup.
