Switching to Mastodon, and looking to see who is here!
@timoreilly People are slowly filtering in, I'd say only about a quarter of my follows on here are people I know from the bird site
@timoreilly Interestingly many of my birdsite communities have some representation here especially with all the open source geo people jumping over in the past few days. The most conspicuous gap is local Oakland/SF bicycle people, and really locals in general. Gemโ€™s mutuals are Oakland people, basketball people, and horticulture people. Theyโ€™re absent here so far.
@migurski @timoreilly tagging @graue as an SF bike person and for interest. scott was also talking about gap in SF local folks on instances, though there is an SF bay instance that I think some people are joining (sfba.social, I think)

@timoreilly

I had a box of cables in my garage that I didn't throw away, and a box of carefully stored old technical books for previous versions of software, that I didn't throw away either.

I eventually realized that I love those software books, because of the magical time in my life when new worlds of technical possibility opened up for me. The cables were similar.

I eventually threw away the cables, but I kept the books. โ™ฅ๏ธ

I guess what I'm trying to say is thank you Tim!

@timoreilly Welcome Tim, I love all your books you have produced over the years
@timoreilly I am here. Not that it matters. :)

@timoreilly wow--welcome!

I've had some of my content published by you folks in the past (for the sake of my #privacy I won't mention it here though)--amazing to see you on board! ๐Ÿ˜ฝ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ“š

@timoreilly Welcome hope you like it in the fediverse
@timoreilly There are a few of us. It takes a bit more to get people's attention over here

@timoreilly So far, it seems only decent people. I haven't yet run into the toxicity from the bird site.

I mean, they're out there, somewhere, but the way Mastodon and other Fediverse softwares work, you have to metaphorically "walk on the bad side of town at night" to find them.

@timoreilly Welcome!

I've been here for four years, just waiting for enough people to discover Mastodon to make it interesting enough to supplant the birdsite. I think that moment has arrived.

@timoreilly I recommend to follow @JamesGleick and his brother Peter, @gnat, and @sjvn
@timoreilly @judell just stumbled across this. Such great memories of tech idealism and new friends.
@rozzie @timoreilly Very timely! This moment reminds me a lot of that moment. Let's make some new memories.
@timoreilly ๐Ÿ‘‹ Hi, Tim! There are a great number of folks on Mastodon now, including many from the early days of the web. It would be great to have you here!
@timoreilly Wait, did you end up not switching?
