There was only one teacher who was willing to teach Ruby even though she received abuse & death threats and that was BarbaraHenry.
The right thing to do isnโ€™t always the easiest thing to do.
Do it anyway. /3
"Mastodon is just like email."
Like email? So I use Microsoft Outlook?

My out of office auto responder:

Hey friends, I'm out this week for the holiday. Please do hesitate to reach out.

If you know my mobile #, you may send me Beyoncรฉ gifs. I will try very hard to not look at my email until I'm back after Thanksgiving.

I'm going to say this again - my white friends who aren't racists do not mind me talking about racism. If you find yourself disturbed by or uncomfortable with topics on racism, you may want to tell yourself some hard truths. And then, work on your findings. You may be racist.
@mekkaokereke I know that it's of 0 consolation, but on our instance, black people are super-duper welcome. Our CoC is listed in the "about" section and we aggressively defederate conspiracy theorists, white suprenacists, anti-vaxers and genocide apologists.
This feels appropriate for the second thing I've ever posted to mastodon.
There were two notable moderation incidents on mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the past 24 hours that I would like to address. In the first, a post was wrongfully removed due to a report claiming it contained a dogwhistle, and in the second, a person was wrongfully suspended due to a report claiming it's an impersonator. Both were undone and apologies issued.

Itโ€™s important, if you can, to give the new folks a little bit of grace

Theyโ€™re coming from the most toxic place on earth, a carefully perfected hate engine

Theyโ€™re expecting everyone to be horrible to them, for many, thatโ€™s all theyโ€™ve ever known of online interaction. Theyโ€™re expecting to be manipulated, dogpiled, and abused.

Some folks will slip into their new place and fit right in, others might be a little feral at first

Iโ€™m not saying to ignore abuse or bad behavior, Iโ€™m just saying, WE can do a lot to show folks how this place works and what we expect from each other

And remember, theyโ€™re coming up from the bottom of a cold crushing sea

Thereโ€™s a lot of nitrogen still dissolved in their blood, and they might need some time to decompress

The clarity of thought and clear description of what's going on, coming from a longtime Mastodon admin experienced in making space for marginalized folk online, is what gives me hope about this place.

I'm staying.
