“It’s About People Feeding Their Families”: Indigenous-Led Anti-Austerity Protests Rock Bolivia

Protests in Bolivia are demanding the resignation of Rodrigo Paz, the country’s first right-wing president in decades. Since Paz took office in November 2025, the country has been placed under austerity measures that have led to a surge in poverty rates for much of Bolivia’s rural and working-class population. We speak to Kathryn Ledebur, director of the Andean Information Network in Cochabamba, Bolivia, about the monthlong protests. “Bolivia is a country where, for 19 years, Indigenous people and social movements enjoyed equal rights and political inclusion,” she explains. “There’s a huge break between what Paz promised and what he’s done in practice, which is select a white, upper-middle-class Cabinet with only two women, reject any genuine dialogue, reject interaction with the Bolivian social movements, or even have any empathy for people and what they’re going through day to day.” Ledebur also discusses the Paz administration’s growing ties with the Trump administration as the U.S. seeks to expand its so-called war on drugs throughout Latin America.

Maybe I’m an exception. Without turning this toot into a book, let me affirm right here that for this #boomer, life has been just as hard as it has been for anyone born after my generation. I’ll add that I was only able to afford my own house at the age of 72 and only with the help of close family members . Nothing has been given to me on a plate as an adult just because I grew up in the post-war years of relatively favourable redistribution of wealth — all of which, and more, has been clawed back in the last 40 yrs or so. As a parting shot, let me just say that all of our collective problems (talking about the 90% of our society) stem from the #neoliberalism which has ensured run-away inequity and the concentration of wealth in the remaining 10% — because we’ve *All* allowed it to occur (due to apathy, brain-washing, stupidity, misinformed, and/or many other faux pas) since the late 70s. All of this to say, I grow tired of all the finger pointing to a single generation for all the ills suffered by society since then. Believe me when I say, I never voted/asked for any of it.

Our first step out of this mess is a simple one, *Join Your Union* and fight for what is due to us all.

As expected, #GregJericho does not mince his words in his latest criticism of the #RBA. In fact, he shows the RBA for what it truly is, a proxy for the #BCA (Business Council of Australia), the all powerful #NeoLiberal #Lobby.

“the RBA really does not give one damn about inflation or even “inflationary expectations”. Truly – Michele Bullock has belled the cat on this now that she has admitted raising interest rates has nothing to do with inflation.

All the RBA cares about is wages growth – they do not, under any circumstances, want workers to think they should be getting a decent wage rise.

Company profits? Oh gosh, well, those need to remain strong. Bullock told reporters that companies should raise their prices to cover costs, because otherwise, in her words, “they would go bust”.
