Pelicans Over Open Skies

While crossing the Calcasieu Ship Channel on the Cameron Ferry in Cameron Parish, Louisiana—a vital link between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf of Mexico—I spotted a graceful flock of six white pelicans, their broad wings carrying them effortlessly across the open sky.

Pelicans by the Shore

This image shows a raft of white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos). I recently learned that a group of pelicans resting in the water is called a raft. The photo isn't great—I struggled to get a good angle on the pelicans from the ferry I was on, and my camera at the time wasn't as good as the ones I use now for wildlife photography. Today, I wondered whether they were hunting or resting. White pelicans typically hunt in groups by herding fish towards the shore. However, based on their demeanor in this image, I would guess they are resting.

Winter visitors to the Sunshine State/Florida, are the beautiful American White Pelicans. Their plumage is magnificent and snow white with black wing tips. These large birds don’t dive for their food like the Brown Pelican but instead are more aquatic and catch their food while swimming along.

Good morning. ☕☕☕

My wife is home from Geogia, maybe I won't eat ramen tonight. I won't say I can't cook at all but if I had a specialty, it would be hotdogs, macaroni and cheese (with Velvetta), and pork and beans - I'd slice up a tomato on the side to make it wholesome. Let's just say I don't like to cook, I wish I did, but I don't. Years ago, decades in fact, I was home with kids my wife still hadn't come home, so I made stuffed bell peppers. I mixed some rice with ground beef and onions, stuffed it in the peppers and into the oven. Who would have thought that you're supposed to cook the rice first. They weren't too bad, a bit crunchy. When my wife got home, the kids asked her if they had to eat it.
