One hot night in May, the Texas House of Representatives debated Bill 1106, which said denying a child's gender or sexual orientation is not abuse or neglect. Seven blocks away, Brigitte Bandit, a local activist and drag queen performed to a standing-room-only crowd at Oilcan Harry's, one of Austin's longtime gay bars. She was performing her weekly show, LegiSLAYtion and Liberation, where she broke down the LGBTQ+ news of the week. @Eater takes a look at gay bars throughout the U.S. South — in Birmingham, Alabama, Fort Worth, Texas, and Durham, North Carolina, about how they're resisting. At the end of that night Bill 1106 passed, but Bandit was not defeated. “We’re in this together,” she said. “There’s people who love and support you, despite the headlines, or who’s across the street.”
