One hot night in May, the Texas House of Representatives debated Bill 1106, which said denying a child's gender or sexual orientation is not abuse or neglect. Seven blocks away, Brigitte Bandit, a local activist and drag queen performed to a standing-room-only crowd at Oilcan Harry's, one of Austin's longtime gay bars. At the end of that night Bill 1106 passed, but Bandit was not defeated. “We’re in this together,” she said. “There’s people who love and support you, despite the headlines, or who’s across the street.”

Pretty much every structure in the US South from European Colonial times through the US Civil War was built with slave labor.
