I just spent three nights camping at #BirdLife Australia's #Gluepot Reserve in the #mallee of #SouthAustralia.

Tenperatures were reaching 37/38 C, and it's very dry there. The reserve has a small dam, but no other open water. The #MurrayRiver is about 40 km to the south.

But the #insects that appeared at night were primarily #freshwater species - lots of #CaddisFlies (#Trichoptera), #Chironomidae and #BackSwimmers (#Notonectidae).

This video shows the insects attracted to a #LepiLED UV light. If these mostly originated down at the river, the insect #biomass streaming up across this region (wind-blown?) is absolutely staggering.

There were also LOTS of #microbats everywhere, and the stars were incredible.

Artist Hubert Duprat Collaborates with Caddisfly Larvae as They Build Aquatic Cocoons from Gold and Pearls

In almost every river in the world, some 12,000 different species of caddisfly larvae wriggle and crawl through sediment, twigs, and rocks in an attempt to build temporary aquatic cocoons. To do this, the small, slow-moving creatures excrete silk from salivary glands near their mouths which they use like mortar to stick together almost everyContinue reading "Artist Hubert Duprat Collaborates with Caddisfly Larvae as They Build Aquatic Cocoons from Gold and Pearls"

Two nights ago I was by the Boyle River, in the NZ Southern Alps, helping set up a drift net to sample stream insects. My flash light was swarmed by many hundreds of caddisflies.

Here's what that looks like without a flash, with the long shutter speed catching the flights of the insects. I held my light at arm's length to avoid a face full of caddisflies, although I still got plenty up my sleeve.
