One of the few insects expected to be on the wing here this time of year: Snow Sedges, genus Psychoglypha, a genus of northern caddisflies.

Caddisflies are closely related to butterflies and moths. Their larvae are aquatic and can be indicative of good water quality. They are also some of the favorite food of American Dippers!

I just spent three nights camping at #BirdLife Australia's #Gluepot Reserve in the #mallee of #SouthAustralia.

Tenperatures were reaching 37/38 C, and it's very dry there. The reserve has a small dam, but no other open water. The #MurrayRiver is about 40 km to the south.

But the #insects that appeared at night were primarily #freshwater species - lots of #CaddisFlies (#Trichoptera), #Chironomidae and #BackSwimmers (#Notonectidae).

This video shows the insects attracted to a #LepiLED UV light. If these mostly originated down at the river, the insect #biomass streaming up across this region (wind-blown?) is absolutely staggering.

There were also LOTS of #microbats everywhere, and the stars were incredible.

Something enjoyable - taking a photo of a small, odd-looking bug with camera at arm's length, trying not to fall into a canal, getting home and seeing the results and thinking - what the heck's *that*?

Pretty sure it's a Mystacides azurea var. albicornis - a caddisfly. Look at those maxillary palps!

Excellent day sampling the #Stellako #River (British Columbia) for #aquatic #insects yesterday. Tons of #stoneflies, #mayflies, and #caddisflies.
