Today we learned from the #Hedgewatchers is #InternationalBatAppreciationDay . We learned also that lately something, we don't understand, happened with the classification of #microbats & #megabats. We don't mind... #bats our humans saw this during #hedgewatch on the #Seychelles

Couldn't decide on if they should have a green background or not, so I am posting both. Just finished these little friends today

Bonda mastiff bat or Thomas's mastiff bat (Molossus currentium [bondae])
The individual photograph has a slightly atypical bright coloration for this species.

Where will all the microbats go when the NSW forests are logged and clear-felled?

Decline of rare UK bat linked to tree felling for British empire’s fleets
"Rife deforestation 500 years ago aligns with western barbastelle slump, finds study of bat DNA."

"The examples of flora and fauna disappearing because of human excesses over the past 50 years are manifold, but research has found that the decline of a characterful bat began in the UK when its trees were felled for shipbuilding 500 years ago."

"“These bats usually roost in mature oak and beech trees, and move around every few nights – so they benefit from areas with substantial woodland cover. Our findings reveal that the northern and southern British populations have declined over several centuries, beginning about 500 years ago. This coincides with a period of widespread tree-felling to supply wood for colonial shipbuilding. It is likely that the decline we found was triggered by this loss of woodland – which has continued since that period.”

The barbastelle are sparsely distributed in the landscape and absent from many areas of the country.

Restoring biodiversity homes after fires

“The golden-tipped bat is found in rainforest gullies along the eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range and was heavily impacted during the Black Summer bushfires of 2019–20. The microbat, which weighs up to 6 grams, is highly specialised and roosts in the bottoms of bird nests made by the yellow-throated scrub wren and the brown gerygone.”
“Indigenous knowledge saves golden-tipped bats as Black Summer bushfires destroy habitat.Traditional Aboriginal weaving techniques are being used to create nests for a tiny, threatened bat species in New South Wales. Ecologists hung about 30 artificial roosts during the 2022 breeding season in golden-tipped bat habitat in the mid-north coast NSW hinterland.”

Scientists call on Indigenous knowledge to save golden-tipped bats as Black Summer bushfires destroy habitat

Black Summer bushfires devoured the golden-tipped bat's nest structures made of fine dried twigs and vegetation. Then Indigenous elders stepped in to help.

ABC News

At 6am, a microbat was flying around my bedroom trying to get home for the day. It was in kinda the right place, 'home' being the bedroom walls, but the entry hole is in the exterior cladding. Eventually it found the window we'd opened and flew away.

I didn't get a photo, so here's one of the first bat that did the same thing - SD card for scale.

Found this microbat having a kip in the laundry this morning (we don't have a belfrey) ;) Maybe a Nyctophilus geoffroyi - lesser long-eared bat? I don't know bats at all really ...
