Watched WolfWalkers again, which means that at last I've finished my rewatch of the three Irish folklore films by Tomm Moore. Upon seeing it again, I think it is my favorite of the three. (But that's like trying to choose between Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke.)

WolfWalkers has the darkest and most intense story out of itself, Song of the Sea, and The Secret of Kells. The animation style is a fantastic evolution from the films which preceded it. And finally, not only is the mythical being in the story a girl (as was the case in the previous two films), but so is the protagonist this time.

All together, WolfWalkers is just an excellent film with a great story, and it looks amazing.

After two weekends in the intense world of Mad Max with Furiosa and Fury Road, I've resumed my Tomm Moore Irish Folktale chronology with Song of the Sea.

Song of the Sea is the first Tomm Moore film I saw, and remains one of my all-time favorites. Between the animation style, the story, and the music, it is the kind of film which can completely draw you in. (It's also where I learned how to pronounce the Irish name Saoirse.)

This leaves only WolfWalkers left for me to watch again, and I'm definitely looking forward to that. I may like that one even more than Song of the Sea, which is saying something. But trying to pick a favorite Tomm Moore film is like trying to pick a favorite Ghibli film: nearly impossible and there are no wrong choices.

Just watched The Secret of Kells again, the first of three fantastic films based on Irish folklore by animator Tomm Moore. The film has a very distinct flat visual style, which makes me think of what it might look like if Genndy Tartakovsky was a cubist. I’m not of Irish heritage myself, but I’ve always been fascinated by the traditions and folklore of the culture.

I’ll probably be following this up with Song of the Sea and WolfWalkers in the coming weeks. They’re all so good in different ways that it’s hard to pick a favorite. If you like animation and Irish folktales, see all three!
