“For a decade I have been blind from one eye”: the confession of Anne Hathaway
For a decade, I have been blind in one eye. Anne Hathaway revealed that she had been “legally blind” (i.e., legally blind, referring to that governmental threshold beyond which assistance and subsidies for the visually impaired are received) in her left eye for a long period of her career. The star of Prada’s *The Devil Wears Prada 2* discussed her health issue on a Popcast episode, which aired on April 22nd. Hathaway explained that she had a rapidly progressing cataract, i.e., opacification of the eye’s lens that caused her a slight loss of vision.
However, as explains by the Mayo Clinic of Minnesota, as the disorder progressed and the opacification of a greater portion of the lens increased, an individual’s daily activities were severely affected. “I had to undergo surgery and I hadn’t realized how serious the situation was until I was able to fully see its extent,” explained the 43-year-old star. “Since then, I’ve calmed down. I hadn’t realized how much it was straining my nervous system.”
Vision problems began in 2013, when Hathaway was filming *Interstellar*, the Oscar-winning science fiction film directed by Christopher Nolan. The actress’s vision remained compromised for a decade, from ages 30 to 40, before she underwent treatment. During that period, she also starred in *The Intern*, *Colossal*, *Ocean’s 8*, *Dark Waters*, and *Armageddon Time*. Hathaway then recounted how her life changed after undergoing the cataract surgery: “I appreciate my sight because literally every day, when I wake up and see like this, I feel it’s a miracle.”
